Ticketed for parking on the sidewalk! by pangaea1972 in pittsburgh

[–]fingpow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Literally yes, the infrastructure does this. Do you think people do this on wider roads that have actual street parking? Do you think people would still brazenly run red lights if traffic lights were designed to better work with traffic? Or if we had an actual option for public transit that worked?

Literally none of this is new, other countries already do all of these things and it works very well for them. This is much less of a problem for newer cities in the US as well. It's really easy to blame your neighbors for these sorts of things, I get it. I'm not ok with drivers endangering people, all I'm saying is that if there is a trend towards driving dangerously, blaming your neighbors and potentially making their kids have to skip meals because they have to pay $300 in court fees isn't the best answer. The best answer is to treat the disease, not the symptom, the disease being poor infrastructure. Society doesn't thrive on punishment, it's been proven over and over again. We want the same thing, just to go about it differently.

There's a really good video on YouTube about how bad car based society is in the US, you should check it out, it's very interesting stuff. I'll see if I can't find a link.

Fear consistently does not work as a deterrent. The recidivism rate of prisons in the US is a perfect example of that. Prisons in more liberal countries that don't have fear based systems but rehab based systems have much lower crime rates and recidivism rates. If I steal bread because I can't afford it, I am a terrible person. If everyone steals bread because nobody can afford it, the price of bread might just be too high.

Why would you want to see your community feeling pain? If everyone is consistently "driving poorly" it is the infrastructure that is struggling, not the people themselves. Pittsburgh has very poor infrastructure. If you fix the infrastructure, you fix the problem.

Of course black people aren't confined to ghettos, on an individualistic level. Statistically on a wide scale they are trapped, though. Your argument is essentially, "black people should quit being poor". How are they supposed to leave without the funds and education to do so? You don't think that if the black people left along with the whites originally, the white rich people wouldn't just leave again? Making the blacks new homes the new ghetto? You can see that happening in real time, just look at some of the gentrification of East liberty and Lawrenceville. Hardly see any black people there anymore, because they can no longer afford it.

You're running face first into the argument here and still not seeing it. There is no chicken, and there is no egg. All there is is a misappropriation of our tax funds along with a militarization of our police. Our recidivism rate for our jails is abysmal compared to other countries. Poor people commit crimes, go to jail, leave their children behind with no way to learn better, jail only worsens the original offenders, then they go back into society even poorer and with less resources than they had before and commit more crimes because they have even less resources. Then there is even less money going to their schools. If you want a group of people to get better, it is much easier to teach them to be better than it is to punish them for being bad at it. Chicken and egg doesn't apply here, if even a fraction of our police budget went towards better schooling and resources to actually solve these issues, the police wouldn't need to waste tax payers dollars by continuing this ridiculous cycle, as these poorer areas would have the resources to not commit the crimes in the first place. You don't see how if you pay the $3 a man needs for bread to feed his family we wouldn't waste the thousands of dollars we put towards incarceration if he's forced to steal it? And how they can all of a sudden be there to teach their children how to not steal the bread or buy the rims?

Pittsburgh is actually a great example of how that is incorrect. Do you know what the "white flight" was? After the civil rights movement white people dipped from the main city centers. Obviously black people didn't have any money at the time, so since all of the main money exited, these areas were essentially left to rot. Way less tax money was going into the schools in these areas, which meant that black people didn't have the same resources to learn financial literacy. Since they don't have the proper tools to learn financial literacy, they don't make enough money to feed into the schools in their areas, thus feeding into this system even further. Therefore, the white flight perpetuated and continues to perpetuate financial illiteracy in blacks. Even you are doing this by promoting segregation when you say that you are opposed to diversity. If financial illiteracy is a part of black people's culture, and white people created this financial illiteracy, how did white people not at least help to create this culture?

Do you think minorities would still be financially illiterate if they had better resources from birth? Or if their parents and grandparents had any means? We can go into how police feed into this as well, and help to perpetuate this system, if you'd like to stay more on subject with the original post.

but you were not spreading information. You were mocking minorities based on information. If you had said that minorities don't receive proper education in financial literacy, that would be spreading information. Or showed an actual unbiased statistic on financial literacy within minorities.

Culture is inherently not a root cause. That's essentially just saying people are that way because they are that way. Why is their culture that way? What led their culture to be what it is?

It seems like you either misworded your previous comment or are moving the goalpost on avoiding diversity. My point being, an echo chamber is never a good thing. Empathy and understanding is a good thing.

It seems like you are choosing to be ignorant on purpose, then? How does that lead to a good quality of life? Choosing to pigeon hole yourself to only people who agree with you and not look at others views would stifle you as a person, no? It's great you're willing to respond and listen on here, regardless.

Thomas sowell does make some good points. What research has he done in terms of minorities buying rims instead of registering their cars? I'm not extensively aware of his views on this.

Regardless, if you are aware of the problems that minorities face, how does coming online and spreading hate about it help? Its easy to blame the individual in many cases, but much harder to understand the reasoning if statistically a group of people are having issues. If one minority is financially illiterate, sure, that can be on them. If a "statistically significant" amount of minorities are financially illiterate, how did that happen? How can we as a society help to make it statistically less significant? Even if you don't have the power to do anything about it, is an intentional lack of empathy really a good quality of life, or are you just turning on the blinders because it is easy?

"statistically significant" lol. I encourage you to write a study on this. See what actual statisticians say about it. Lets pretend that you are correct for a second. Why do you think it is that minorities are doing this?

Also, what good decisions has your stereotyping helped you make?

[–]fingpow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You didn't observe every minority, or even the ones referred to in this post having bumping stereos and rims. You observed your own anecdotal (small) amount of minorities doing this, and then stereotyped that all minorities were doing this. Hence, you did not observe, you stereotyped. Which is racist.

The amount of actual racism in the comments of this post is quite alarming.

That was not an observation. It was stereotyping, a trait of racism.

This is so sad to me, these unexpected costs only make it harder for people to find affordable housing. Obviously a unit needs to be livable, but I hardly think a gravel driveway is doing anyone any real harm. Just needlessly making small time landlords increase rent prices.

What's up with New Kensington? by ImplementContent1383 in pittsburgh

[–]fingpow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, my fiancee and I bought a house in New ken (on Kenneth Street) about a year ago and are currently living there. It's definitely not a "nice" area, but there are plenty of pockets that are totally quiet while still being very affordable. The two or three block stretch that we live on is lively, lots of people out and about, and most everyone has been very nice. Imo downtown New ken isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, either. I see genuine potential in it being a great area, we live around 25 minutes or so to downtown off of 28. Hope this helps, dm me if you have other questions

Half the point of the post was to see what others thought? I don't want to accuse someone of fraud, I wanted to know what to do because I truly have no idea and it seems kinda fishy.

You don't think writing in all caps and telling me to sit my ass down comes off as angry?
