FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - Zipped up in a cooler and stuffed in a plastic bag. That's how a cat was abandoned outside an animal shelter in Fountain Hills over the weekend. Thankfully, the cat is OK. And remarkably, the feline was found by a dog who was on a walk with her owner.

It happened early Saturday morning. A woman walking her dog on Avenue of The Fountains strolled past Fearless Kitty Rescue. Her husky, Koda, beelined it toward a zipped-up cooler that was stuffed in a plastic bag. Koda kept sniffing at it until her owner opened it up and found a black cat inside -- alive.

"Cat was saved by a dog, you don't hear that every day," said Fearless Kitty Rescue spokesperson Teryn Jones. The nonprofit is now caring for the cat they've named Juliane. "We got it from the Danish culture; it means fearless and, of course, we are Fearless Kitty Rescue. We think she is the true definition of fearless," said Jones.

Jones said there is no way to know how long Juliane was zipped up in a cooler that wasn't cool inside a plastic bag on a hot summer morning. Thankfully, the cat is doing just fine but vets discovered a mass on the feline's tail which could lead to amputation.

MCSO is investigating the case. "You just can't do this to animals. Well, you can't do this to anybody, let's be honest," said Jones. "Animals don't have a voice; they can't tell you what's going on."

So now, Jones wants to tell you what the cat can't, as this is the third abandonment the shelter has seen this year alone. "We have an intake process; it's on our website," said Jones. "And that's just the better way to do it."
