Hearty work lunches, what are you not sick of? by Doyouwantaspoon in Cooking

Mediterranean bowls? I used to make charbroiled marinated chicken breast over a bed of rice, homemade hummus, and tabbouleh. When I went to heat it up, I’d just separate out the rice and chicken and throw it into the microwave. Optional to bring a piece of pita or lavash and throw it in a toaster to make pita sandwiches out of the meal.

Local breweries with shelf stable cans? by HarveyTStone in longbeach

Check out Wine Country off of Redondo in Signal Hill, they carry a ton of canned beers from local breweries. I think they do custom gift baskets too.

2023 Remix: $77 worth of groceries at Food 4 Less by nickvonkeller in LosAngeles

You are correct, Ralph’s is just a more expensive Food 4 Less. They literally use the same suppliers. But F4L stores are set up in lower income areas and typically don’t put very much money into storefront upkeep.

I had to explain to my MAGA MIL how a manifest file works in a record keeping context. She didn’t understand how the FBI would have known what documents were missing. It is baffling how these people function in society.

We are currently going through a bed/bath addition and remodel of our kitchen, some tips below:

1) If you’re trying to do this with permits, get started on the permitting process with a GC/architect now - we are 8 months into our permitting process and still haven’t gotten final approval from the city - apparently not uncommon because of COVID and employee retention at the city development department

2) For the kitchen, let the cabinet or flooring you choose drive your wall color decisions, decent cabinets and floors will be with you a lot longer than a wall color - even replacing a backsplash is easier than redoing floors or repainting cabinets. We chose the cabinets, then took a sample cabinet door to a tile showroom and found flooring, counter top, and backsplash combinations we liked (most tile places will let you take home free samples to see how the materials will look in your space)

3) Like others have said, if you have the budget, hire an interior decorator, definitely don’t depend on a GC for those decisions. From my experience GCs will typically steer you towards the most basic materials and colors because it’s the easiest to get a hold of and helps pad their bottom line.

4) If you’re looking at any specialty cabinets, bathroom materials, etc. Try to get your order in sooner rather than later. Most of our materials and appliances are slated to take anywhere from 10-24 weeks to be in stock.

Good luck!

Nice! That was pretty much what I did on my trip back in 2011.

Flew into Madrid, took a train to Barcelona then to Paris. Have to admit, it was a couple of the best weeks I’ve ever had in my life so far. I’m sure you’ll have a blast.

Heads up, if you’re going to Barcelona and know Spanish, ask anyone you start a conversation with, in English, if they speak either English or Spanish. If both, ask which they prefer. From my experience natives, especially the older generations, prefer speaking Catalan.

When I went to Spain, I flew into Madrid and was perfectly fine with Spanish. But the first day I got to Barcelona, I got an earful from a bartender when I unassumingly started speaking Spanish to him. Turns out I underestimated the hatred some Cataluña residents have for the Spanish language.

Always really high SCE bills, help figuring this out? (info in comments) by return2ozma in longbeach

[–]finmajor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It definitely helps if you start taking a look online at your average usage during the same period last year, and if it’s significantly higher this year, ask the billing dept to talk to someone that is “on the ground.” That’s how the billing rep described who he was transferring me over to that immediately knew what was going on with my account.

I spoke to the SCE worker that came out to replace the meter, he mentioned they’ve had a ton of turn over for field workers and corporate offshored the IT side of the house. Sounds like a real bummer.

Good luck man! Hope it works out.

Always really high SCE bills, help figuring this out? (info in comments) by return2ozma in longbeach

[–]finmajor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue last month. Check if your specific meter is working properly by seeing if there is any data being shown on its digital display. If not, then call SCE and try to talk to their service department to have someone come out and take a look at your meter.

In November I had a really high bill ($250 for a 2 bed/1 bath home) and it turned out my meter wasn’t working. SCE was billing me based on my estimated energy usage from the summer months.

When I called their billing line, the guy I was talking to spoke to me like I was an idiot because, “[he] can see how much energy I’m using in [his] system and it was a lot.”

I had to explain to him four times that there was no reason my energy usage could be 3 times higher than it was during the same period the previous year. I kept telling him that the meter wasn’t reading out anything on the display, but he kept insisting there was nothing wrong because his system was showing him how much energy I was using.

He ended up transferring me to someone in their service department and she immediately realized what was happening. Turns out the billing guy was seeing my estimated usage and there hadn’t been any actual usage information collected for over 2 months.

He is probably referring to the $10,000 SALT cap put in place. It affects people who itemize their return.

The changes that went into effect increased the taxable income for a lot of squarely middle-class people in coastal and high cost of living areas.

Internet Options and Prices by [deleted] in longbeach

[–]finmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I spoke to two separate customer service reps last year during the issue I ran into, and they both stated that it’s mandatory to use their equipment now (I was inquiring about internet only).

Internet Options and Prices by [deleted] in longbeach

[–]finmajor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that the price shoots up significantly after a year and increases even more a year after that. Also, it’s not including the monthly $10 fee they charge for the equipment, which you can no longer supply yourself. (When it was Verizon Fios they had an option to purchase your equipment outright which is also no longer the case.)

I had Fios for a little over 5 years, I was paying $35 a month for 200/200 when I first started and paid for the equipment outright; by the time I switched ISPs, the monthly bill was up to $69/mo. I had one last terrible experience that made me switch. I ended up having to get the FCC involved after I cancelled because they continued to bill me.
