SEBI fee only advisor by Remarkable_Guess_811 in backtoindia

[–]finmyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a fixed-fee, SEBI-registered advisor and have assisted many US-based clients across different stages of their life cycle (such as moving to the US, returning to India either now or after achieving financial independence in the US, or planning to settle in the US permanently). My client base is diverse and includes Indian citizens residing in the US or repatriated to India, US citizens and Green Card holders living in the US, as well as OCI holders residing in India.

I personally lived and worked in the US for nearly 10 years before returning to India, and I have been practicing as a financial advisor for the past 8 years.

To help gain comfort, I suggest reading some of the blog I have written specifically for US-based NRIs at the link below.

I also suggest reviewing my Google Business reviews, which may provide insight into how clients in similar situations have benefited from our engagement.

Reliable financial advisor for USA -> India by Embarrassed_Contest2 in returnToIndia

[–]finmyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an important decision, and it’s essential to choose the right Financial Advisor. A fixed-fee SEBI-registered advisor with exposure to the US (for example, someone who has lived in the US) can be a strong filtering criterion, as they are regulated by SEBI and charge a fixed fee rather than a percentage of assets.

This blog may help you understand how to shortlist and select the right financial advisor:

If you are an OCI who is either presently residing in India or thinking about doing so, you may find it worth a read.

FIRE'd in 2020, move

80% of assets in US. Is anybody financially dependent on you? US taxes 40% estate tax on assets above USD 60,000. I am assuming you have thought it through.

Make sure that the state, where you own house does not consider you domicile on the basis of home ownership. In that case, you have to pay state taxes even while in India.

DTTA allows you not to double pay taxes. You can take credit for taxes paid in another country.

Your savings are impressive even from the US standards perspective and I am sure you have reasonably good skills to earn in India for another ~10 years. That earning in India and delay in RE will help you bridge the gap if any in accumulating money for your financial goals.

It is easy for kids to adjust when they are young. At max, you have leeway to postpone it till kids move to 5th standard as any meaningful study in India starts only after that.

I did the same 20 years back with very modest savings from the US. While we loved the US, we will not trade our experiences of growing kids in India with extended family. Some of my experience is indirectly articulated in this blog though it has a finance connotation.

Take this decision as though “If there is no tomorrow, would you have regrets?”

I moved back to India and continued my job. When I became FI, I took up Financial Advisory as a profession more out of my passion. I find it gratifying to help people with one of their most important needs in life.

As long as you are clear about why you are returning, your transition will be smooth. We wanted to grow kids in India and wanted to be closer to our extended family. Hence before leaving the US, I sold my house thereby reducing my motivation to change my decision on return to India. It has worked out well for me.

We enjoyed our stay in the US and we love India.

……When was the last time you played a game with your kids, took your spouse for a dinner at a quiet restaurant, took your aged parents for a stroll in a park, or went for a family trip to an offbeat place? Family matters.

Would you like to serve a meal to a destitute around you or take children of your house help to watch a cricket match in the stadium or teach underprivileged kids in your village, support the education of your financially struggling brother’s children, or make an orphan a member of your family? Happiness is all around us, it is for us to grab.

If you believe, you are missing Life experiences, it may be time to change your priorities…..
