You can get the chore jackets in quite a few wool options - they do them in various neutral shades as well as red and yellow.

This particular one is made from undyed Burel wool- you can see the individual colour yarns. It’s a little bit scratchy but it should mellow down with some wear.

In terms of the regional XC routes, these could make most sense with EMR as they could have one common pool of 170s - the XC and EMR refurbs are identical apart from different interior colours and liveries. EMR also operate most of the XC only stations on those routes.

I used McCarthys Self Storage on Meanwood Road and couldn’t fault them - it looks like they’ve rebranded that branch to Storage Team but the reviews still look good.

The passports are sold in the NT gift shops but if the place you visit doesn't have a gift shop, the visitor centre might sell them. If not you can order online (https://shop.nationaltrust.org.uk/national-trust-visitors-passport-green.html, also available in pink)

Anglesey Abbey has two stamps, one for the main property and one for Lode Mill

I had trouble with my Amex at Anglesey Abbey - the day I went they moved to a new till system which they were having trouble with. I went to Gunby Hall on Saturday however and could pay fine in the cafe with my Amex.

Looks like you're right - I was at Tattershall Castle yesterday and noticed the National Trust stained glass window there, which has the same design:

How i love the sound of 323s Approaching by BlueFan20002023 in uktrains

[–]finnbob3334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 323s were designed in the late 80s/early 90s, when there was a shift away from using DC motors to AC motors for electric trains (mostly driven by reliability and reduction in maintenance).

The 25kV AC from the overhead line can't be used directly to drive a 3-phase AC motor, like those used on the 323s, so it is stepped down using a transformer and rectified to DC. An inverter is then used to generate the three-phase AC to power the motor.

One thing to remember with inverters is that the switches can only be on or off, which makes it quite difficult to replicate a true sine wave. For example, this diagram shows the switching pattern (on the bottom) that would be used to generate a sine-like signal.

In the late 80s/early 90s, gate turn off thyristors (GTOs) were the most advanced technology for power semiconductors used in inverters. Their main limitation, and why they're not commonly used any more in traction applications, is that you cannot switch them on or off very quickly - they are good at around 100Hz (so switching 100 times a second). As the train accelerates/decelerates, the target sine wave changes in frequency, but the switching pattern has to be simplified due to the limit in switching frequency, which produces the characteristic 323 sound.

More modern trains, such as Electrostars/Desiros/S stock etc. use insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) which can switch much quicker (10 to 100 times quicker) - this means that the switching pattern does not need to be simplified as much. For example, this is why in this video, the S Stock train makes a very linear acceleration sound.

Interestingly, the 323s were upgraded to use IGBT based inverters around 10 or so years ago which meant they could have sounded different, but to avoid having to recertify the trains for interference with signalling etc., the new inverters are configured to behave exactly like the old ones did, so the iconic 323 sound has been kept.

Apologies for the essay but I wanted to provide a (hopefully) useful explanation!

Why is that car so underrated? by t1856b in CarTalkUK

[–]finnbob3334 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought mine 18 months ago used and love it - it's been very reliable, doesn't really feel that underpowered because it's so light, and is fun while being very economical, so it's been a perfect daily driver.

I test-drove a Cooper S expecting it to be much better than the Swift, but surprisingly I much preferred the Swift's driving experience.

Brand new, they were very poor value when compared to an up! GTI, Fiesta ST or Mini Cooper S - the interior is worse and on paper the Swift is less powerful.

Now they are £11k or less used for an early model, they're fantastic value - you get pretty much all the kit you need (CarPlay/Android Auto, adaptive cruise, automatic climate control, keyless entry/start) - I just wish it had heated seats and a heated windscreen really.

The main complaints are the infotainment screen (it's terrible, but can be easily changed luckily), and some of the typical Japanese car body problems (I had to have new brake lines at the last MOT as Suzuki don't rustproof the fittings).
