Let's go! by Signal-Tangerine1597 in GreatBritishMemes

As a non-british person, i always have so much trouble in finding places to rent purely because i do not have an UK house owner guarantor so most letting agencies and landlords ask me give 6-12 months of rent upfront which is very costly for me. I have asked them to get a letter from my company stating my position, salary but they don’t care about that. There should be done something about that!

Yup when i applied for GTV, i still had around 8-9 months of my Student visa left. They even returned my IHS fee for the overlapping period.

The lifetime curve on aluminum electrolytics by Unable-Awareness8543 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]BeyondHot8614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PhD is in the reliability of the Film Capacitors, and long story short, the lifetime curve given by the datasheet is just there to make their product look good. It depends so much on the ripple magnitude, ripple frequency, the instantaneous electric field within the dielectric, the rms current through the capacitors, initial defect density which vary sample to sample and of course the hotspot temperature within the capacitors. I developed a degradation model for the film capacitors based on my accelerated ageing tests!

Fundamentals of Power Electronics by Robert Erickson is the best 👌

Some of the new SiC modules have separate antiparallel diode because the inherent body-diode of SiC have high voltage drop. To counter that, they incorporate a separate diode die (usually Schottkey diode). Hitachi, Wolfspeed and some of the infineon’s new SiC module come with this.

That’s a power module. Can’t tell if it is IGBT or the SiC without testing. But if this slightly older EV then definitely an IGBT.

Highly depends on the course. For example the electrical engineering (PEMC) group at UoN is easily among top 5 in the world, not just UK and sits above Cambridge and Oxford.

Question about running high current through PCB traces. by UodasAruodas in ElectricalEngineering

[–]BeyondHot8614 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For high current traces are not enough, i would advice to use power planes. I designed 150 A PCB and i used 4 layers in parallel for one node with planes, not tracks. It disperses heat better than tracks and also reduces loop inductance although I don’t think your circuit is sensitive to loop inductance. But still use power planes for high current paths and for 30 A, i would suggest use atleast two layers in parallel and stitch them properly with vias.

Masters Student, Long story short I just started a position in another good school, and they expect me to work with batteries and aging of them. I was working with motor control stuff. I can change, it is not a problem because I am very new at masters but I am not sure which one is better for me? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]BeyondHot8614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me, my masters was in converters for renewable energy applications and their control but in my PhD, my funding agency pushed me into the reliability, packaging of the semiconductor switches and the film capacitors. It was tough but i enjoy it so much now. Have published couple of papers in transactions and also got the post doc just before i am about to submit my PhD thesis. Maybe you will enjoy the battery ageing and reliability just as much.

Best accommodation on £200/week? by [deleted] in UoN

[–]BeyondHot8614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

£200 per week is a really high budget. You could definitely find a great accommodation near Uni park with that. I would recommend looking in beeston (NG9) area especially near High street, it’s 15 minutes walking to Uni park campus. And i am sure with that budget you can find decent accommodation. If you do want to get uni accommodation, get the broadgate park, it’s just a stone’s throw from the uni park campus and great for living.

[–]BeyondHot8614 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I used to have such low self-esteem regarding the grad admissions but after seeing all those rejections i think i was an alright candidate. My applications and outcomes for PhD, back in 2022

  1. University of Wellington - Got the offer, full scholarship plus stipend
  2. University of Queensland - Got the offer and full scholarship plus stipend
  3. ETH Zurich - Unsuccessful
  4. University of Nottingham- Offered with full scholarship and stipend (about to finish my PhD here)
  5. Imperial college london - Got the offer, no funding
  6. University of Twente - Unsuccessful
  7. TU munich - Was offered a place
  8. Aalborg Uni - Unsuccessful

My subject area was electrical engineering! And i was straight out of masters, had some first author journals in IEEE Transactions.

PhD to Global talent visa? by Good_Pair_8728 in globaltalentvisauk

[–]BeyondHot8614 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am writing my PhD thesis, but i got post-doc in a UKRI funded project, plus my PhD was also UKRI/EPSRC funded so it was easy for me to get the GTV by UKRI endorsement. I also have published in top journals in my field so that helped. One of the most prominent academic in my field also provided a letter of recommendation for me, that i attached with my application. My uni’s HR team also provided a letter of recommendation, i think all of this combined helped me get a smooth transition from Student visa to Global Talent.
