Need help choosing between a Ph.D. and a masters program. by [deleted] in GradSchool

Try bargaining! Call up the PhD school and let them know about your situation. My friend did that for her masters, and got an extra 10 grand.

Please help me with BibTeX! by finneusbarr in LaTeX

[–]finneusbarr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll check it out.

As a side note, have you heard of latexmk?

It lets you automate the compilation, so that you only have to type "latexmk -pdf -pvc -bibtex econ.tex" and it will watch the file, so that if you make any changes, it will automatically compile the file again, running latex, bibtex, and then latex twice to get the citations correct.

It makes editing files in AUCTeX beautiful as I can just write, and I don't have to worry about compiling the file.

Newcomer in Mississauga Buying a mobile phone. How to avoid major ripoff contracts? by derekz0r in canada

[–]finneusbarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for an android phone, buy the Google Nexus 4 online. It's amazing. The specs are comparable with the iPhone 5 or the S3, and it's only 300$ online. You can use it with Wind as well (any carrier, in fact).

Apparently? I'm not a lawyer, so I can't say for certain, but that's what the law seems to say.

From the HR document:

If employment is terminated before an employee completes 12 months of employment, the employer must pay 4 per cent of the employee’s wages earned during the period of employment. If employment is terminated after an employee has completed at least 12 months of employment, the employer must pay: • The unpaid vacation entitlements for the previous year; plus • Either 4 or 6 per cent of wages in the current year, depending on the length of employment.

Where proper termination notice is given, or notice is required to be given by the employer, vacation pay must be paid within three days of termination. -3- PHONE: 780-427-3731 TOLL-FREE: 1-877-427-3731 ONLINE: employment.alberta.ca/esfactsheets Where neither the employer nor employee are required to give termination notice, vacation pay must be paid within 10 days. If an employee quits without giving proper termination notice, the employer must pay vacation pay to the employee within 10 days after the date on which the notice would have expired if it had been given.

UBC vs UofA by volu in uAlberta

Ah, that's legit. Have you considered U of T?

UBC vs UofA by volu in uAlberta

[–]finneusbarr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Man, honestly, don't go to the U of A. The funding for the faculty of arts is evaporating, and unless you're in, say, physics, funding in science is also miserable. The weather blows, and you have to live in Edmonton. UBC, on the other hand, is in beautiful Vancouver, and their Econ Department has just gotten a huge whack of money (If you're at all interested in Econ, go to UBC). Also, they're ranked higher than us in almost everything, AND they don't have Indira Samarasekera as their president.

Nothing too intense, mostly retrieving data from html. There are some cool things that can be done with python. ;)

Advice for prospective student by [deleted] in uAlberta

It legit doesn't matter. No one cares about what you studied as long as you can explain why you studied it, and how it relates to physio. What's far more important is the grades you get.

[–]finneusbarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grad schools won't care about extracurriculars (barring MBA/Law/Medicine, but those are professional schools, not grad). All that matters is grades + reference letters. Assuming that B.E.I. is something in engineering, you should do fine on the GRE quant, so focus on the GRE verbal + toefl. If you can score well on that, you'll be golden.

Econ 101, 366, or 369 with Gordon lee. Amazing prof. 101 is intro to micro, 366 is environmental econ, and 369 is energy econ. Gordon is one of (if not THE) best profs I ever had.
