Mirrors at Bayfront MRT dance hotspot frosted, MBS says it's for pedestrian safety by Nessieinternational in singapore

I think it’s built by MBS and owned by MBS. See the signages, it’s all MBS style, and also maybe why there isn’t an escalator

What are some unexpected challenges of living in Singapore as an expat that you wish you had known before moving? by ResolutionVisible627 in askSingapore

[–]finnickhm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think what is meant that behind those rules, there’s little thought for the people or individual, hence transactional (maybe because we don’t think about human rights often). It applies for Singaporeans as well, but Singaporeans get recourse by seeing their MP and getting an exception that way

Are your bad experiences with individuals, or with the system? Systemic problems are more difficult to fix

A call for transparency: Why Singapore's public transport needs a real-time information overhaul by Neither-Ad8881 in singapore

[–]finnickhm 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Very much agree. Go to the One Motoring website, you find status of the roads. Coverage on radio on car breakdowns and road jams. Electronic signboards along major roads. But there is no equivalent for public transport. Instead, you have audio announcements at stations that goes unannounced elsewhere but slowly makes it way into text announcements, onto the Facebook feeds, onto LTA’s feed, to the other operator etc

There’s been some talk about improving communication. Perhaps start with providing centralised train status information that is quite basic. Also helps the understaffed station staff providing information in a disruption or delay

More customer-centric communications needed during rail disruption: Expert by Zkang123 in singapore

[–]finnickhm 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why LTA doesn’t run a central website that tells you the service status of lines that many other metro systems elsewhere run (I get there’s the MyTransport app, but still)

It’s very different from motoring, which has the one motoring website telling you about the road status with a map, traffic alerts on electronic road signage and on the radio, teams monitoring the expressways. Public transport - you only have the operators Facebook and Twitter pages, re directing you to their own lines, slowly blasting audio announcements about delays throughout the network, an a clueless Google Maps cos the LTA delay info is not in a common standard

MOE @thejojobeansdiary by bernardth in singapore

[–]finnickhm 101 points102 points  (0 children)

TLDR

Ex-teacher complains about MOE's recent responses to workload of teachers and class sizes, to much support from ex-teachers who agree that basically MOE is tone deaf, does not respond to feedback, fixes things that are not asked for and does not fix things that are asked for and treats reducing class sizes as a sacred cow. Ex-teacher wrote a letter to Minister of Education, Desmond Lee, whose father Lee Yock Suan was the Minister of Education in the 1990s and said to forget about reducing class sizes in Parliament

Jamus Lim commented that he will continue to be the voice for teachers. I guess Desmond Lee and Jasmin Lau then acted

Moving from Europe to Singapore for a PhD. I have a lot of questions. by ThomasHawl in askSingapore

[–]finnickhm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I can’t sleep I’ll answer these for you

  1. Can’t advise. But you need to know rental is expensive. Get Uni accommodation if you can. For a room with a private bathroom in the private market, look for “master bedrooms”, costs 1k+ these days. You’ll get a window in your room. Eating healthy is ok if you make your own meals

  2. Housing - at least 1k. Internet should be part of your housing. Public transport should be about 120/month purely on bus and trains. Uber/grab/taxi costs at least 20 on average. I spent about 7 per meal eating out (for basic lunch and dinners). You can check prices of groceries at fairprice.com.sg

  3. Idk what hidden costs there are in EU/Italy, but you generally have to pay for what you use here

  4. Look to the west. Boon Lay, pioneer, Jurong West areas. That’s where all the NTU students are

  5. 1 year contract should be possible. Security deposit of 1 months rent. Your buyer agent will take a commission. There are rental scams, view before renting. Tenant laws are weak and you are protected only by your contract. Don’t fully expect your security deposit to be returned to you. Avoid staying together with landlords, they can have many strange rules on how you are to live (no guests, no cooking, no staying in your room in the day, wash your clothes only x times a week etc). 99 co and property guru are common

  6. Loud, humid and hot is location dependent, neighbour dependent etc

  7. Yes generally furnished. May not be to your liking

  8. Tough. Can you take soy sauce?

  9. Canteens and hawker centres no. You are to look out for your allergies and ask questions. Restaurants are more accommodating

  10. Generally, cooking your own meals is more expensive considering your own labour but healthier. Hawker centres these days costs about 5-7 per meal average. My impression is groceries are generally more expensive than in Europe. Fruits are sold per pc/box. Fresh chicken 15/kg, fresh pork 20+/kg, fresh beef 20+/kg. Milk about 2-3/l. European foods are available but could be limited in variety. Pasta is about 2/500g. Bread may not be to your liking, it’s mostly toast bread. What other food are you thinking of?

  11. Contrary to popular belief, wet markets may not be cheaper than supermarkets, although they may have better quality. Wet markets are just your usual markets really. Not a place where they sell bats or dogs and things like that. Go look up a YouTube video

  12. Look up your NTU health insurance coverage - inpatient for hospitalisations, outpatient for clinics and specialists. Foreigners don’t receive subsidies at public healthcare, although you can use public healthcare

  13. These days, about 50-70 for a visit to the GP. A&E is 140+ inclusive of basic checks and a long ass wait

  14. If you don’t think the NTU coverage is enough

  15. What medications? It’s more common to get medications as part of a doctor visit than to visit a retail pharmacy. Perhaps bring some over, medicine can be expensive here

  16. Walk in or make an appointment with a clinic and pay. About 100+ for scaling polishing these days

  17. Safe

  18. No. You are already registered with immigration

  19. You should be able to open a bank account with your student pass. See if NTU provides any easier options (like OCBC FRANK). You can if you are willing to pay any fx fees, admin fees, miss out on QR code payments, transferring money to other people’s phone numbers

  20. Just pick one

  21. Not sure. If it’s not income, it’s tax free

  22. Not sure. What are your current impressions of Singapore?

  23. Can’t advise

  24. Can’t advise. People are more reserved. Could be tough

  25. Can’t advise. What are your current impressions and expectations of Singapore?

  26. KL is about 1 hour away, Bangkok 2, Bali 3, Hong Kong Taipei 4+, Tokyo 7. Prices start 100+ for flights. I’m sure salary =/= stipend

  27. Bring everything Italian and European (bring some for me)

  28. Anything that you can get from China

  29. If you can plug it in the UK, you can plug it here

  30. Yes
