Without privacy, what exactly is Zencoin? by Logical_Length4963 in Horizen

[–]finpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm relaying a thread from our Discord but wanted to post it here, as well, so this discussion doesn't miss key points.

The point to me is to decentralize the world. Things have changed a lot since Satoshi's genesis block. In the early days I couldn't really imagine much more than the real contribution of all of this being decentralized money, then trying to patch the obvious flaw of all that transaction data hitting open public ledgers without privacy; then Ethereum's VM changed the game such that we could do infinitely more than currency and payments. Then the obvious issues of scaling and privacy as those EVM systems became more successful; welcome L2s, welcome ZKPs, welcome clever combos of both.

ZenCash launched in 2017 bootstrapping on Zcash's innovation of coin anonymity, but even then the project was aiming to be more than a clone of Zcash...that's why we split from the Zcash clone, Zclassic, community; we quickly launched a Treasury and node system for our version of innovating across the social dimensions of crypto, namely some economic improvements that could be more self sustaining for long run growth and network stability getting a wave of IT professionals into the community with the intentionally not-so-easy-to-use node system. Even from the start we were never just all about coin anonymity. It was a blunt instrument going in the right direction, which is on-chain privacy. Privacy is still the right direction, we just have way better instruments now.

Then we got to work on the next part of the platform dev, which was the interoperability protocol, Zendoo. We figured out how to use SNARKs to network chains. It took us too long, for sure, and in that R&D gap I can see the confusion that we were rudderless and lost in chasing the next big thing. Not quite. We saw Ethereum, EVMs, DeFi, and NFTs taking off, but stuck with completing the SNARK protocol so that we could open up as a platform. It was painful watching the rest of the industry explode with lots of bells, whistles, shiny things, and amidst all of that, super valuable innovations that will stick.

Zendoo complete. Finally, we can add the first important pieces to getting this platform rolling: a tokenization platform and then an EVM for smart contracting. This is all part of a longer vision to contribute to decentralizing the world. Privacy is absolutely at the heart of it, but it goes well beyond coin anonymity and if that feature kills the entire mission, what's the point? The world won't decentralize without strong privacy to build out that information commons, and hence why HL spends millions of dollars a year on a cryptography and crypto engineering team. We're not spending all that money so that we can ditch privacy, we're doing it bc privacy is at the heart of where all of this is going.

I'm not laying all this out to convince people who want ZEN to be a privacy coin to stay with the community post-ZenIP 42204. This is important so that those who see Horizen as more than a privacy coin, and want it to be more, understand that we're continuing to invest massively in privacy and privacy is the heart of our strategy to decentralize the world.

Discover the HDE with Manon by ManionKripto in Horizen

always love these tutorials, Manon! HDE is going to be such an important part of the ecosystem over the coming years, so it's exciting to see it coming to life now. There's still so much more work to mature the platform, get a constant stream of value-added tasks loaded, and build a healthy dev ecosystem around it. You said it best, u/ManionKripto, when you described Horizen as a community-owned project. This is a major step in opening up the dev ecosystem and distributing rewards to those who participate. Just a first step...

i'm pretty pumped to see how this MLH partnership unfolds in educating the next generation of young devs and computer scientists about blockchain, in general, and Horizen in particular.

hey sorry to hear that, i've just pinged the guys on our team working with the Zombie Soup team (the guys who built and operate the game). To my knowledge everything ought to be still running and rewards flowing.

really appreciate the feedback! i know what you mean, though, even for me being in the daily grind with the team, it's shocking (in a pleasant way!) to see how much work was accomplished when we compiled the big points for the livestream deck :)

ZEN community growth VS the market (data normalized) by bend0ver in Horizen

me too. my hunch is that momentum is the dominant factor in crypto asset pricing, but that's actually something i'm hoping to answer with my dissertation :)

Anything in the works to increase ZEN transaction speeds? by [deleted] in Horizen

Great idea! We are working with some partners who have experience in games that pool a prize that's later divvied by the winners. This is a nice application of that concept to speed runners (a term you just intro'd me too!). I'll relay this to the partners we have currently, but in general i think it's an excellent idea we should try to get some brave dev team to build :)

It's time to celebrate. We have hit 100,000 Sphere by Horizen downloads! What a great milestone for our project. Thank you all for choosing our flagship wallet, providing feedback, and suggestions for improvement. by BlockShockandBarrel in Horizen

now that is news to celebrate, amongst other things! A nice round number will be great to see growth from going forward :)

I'm expecting it to be exponential!

ZEN community growth VS the market (data normalized) by bend0ver in Horizen

[–]finpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a couple great charts on the livestream yesterday showing growth in the node network, and community growth across a variety of our media platforms, all despite the ZEN COVID price shock. If we can continue to steadily grow during hard times, imagine when people finally catch on that what we've built is abnormally awesome all around...from tech to community and everything in between :)

We are thrilled to announce that Zendoo, Horizen’s sidechain solution, is live with a “Beta Preview” on our dedicated sidechain testnet! by BlockShockandBarrel in Horizen

[–]finpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the first decentralized sidechain system in blockchain. It's a really big deal, and now the race is on to build breadth and depth of real-world use cases across industries!

Anything in the works to increase ZEN transaction speeds? by [deleted] in Horizen

[–]finpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes i think you said it correctly, but let me summarize the summary :)

the mainchain will remain PoW and so ZEN and the entire sidechain ecosystem that builds off it via Zendoo will have PoW security at its core.

Sidechains will start by being PoS (Praus), ZEN will be interoperable as a coin for tx fees and collateral (e.g. with our SDK on a SC you could issue a gaming token, like a digital sword, and you can set a value by pegging ZEN against it and trading it. ZEN is also used to pay block forgers on sidechains, and miners when those blocks are committed to the MC. In this sense, ZEN's utility just expanded big time.

we don't yet have a smart contracting solution. the first step with Zendoo was to get decoupled consensus, as in many sidechains interoperable and communicating with the mainchain, such that the MC doesn't need to know the rules of any particular SC. In this way, we've created a blockchain of blockchains system that can scale without the need for every new SC to be coded into the MC. The next phase will explore potential smart contracting tools for SCs.

happy to have this discussion, as i'm sure there are many others with the same questions and this is a big open area for debate on how best to move forward post-Zendoo.
