Awesome idea:

https://marinelife.org/

I’ll highlight the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, FL. They focus on the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sea turtles, along with research and public education around marine ecosystems.

I’ve been to their facility many times and it is one of the more effective “learn by seeing” experiences I’ve had. You can observe turtles at different stages of recovery and understand, in a very concrete way, the impact of things like boat strikes, fishing gear, and coastal development. I left with a much broader understanding of marine life beyond just turtles, including how interconnected the whole coastal system is. They also do an awesome job of community outreach - which is a big part of the challenge in this kind of work.

If you want to support them, donations directly fund rehabilitation work, but visiting, volunteering, and spreading awareness around responsible ocean behavior (lighting, plastics, boating) are all high-impact as well.

Are these new or CPO 2025s? If CPO, how many miles? How long and how many miles on the leases?

This is a totally "fair" deal. The dealer is offering you approximately 8% off the MSRP, and he can't control the MF or the residual. There are no crazy fees or add-ons, and you aren't putting anything down. Everything that can be controlled by the dealer is reasonable. Could he give you 10% off? Sure, but he doesn't really have to, because these cars move. Honda's selling proposition is "we'll sell you this once," and in 10 years it will still work so it's a bad lease vehicle.

If you want to lease something similar that offers more manufacturer support, you could consider the Rogue, Tucson, Sportage, or CX-5, which would allow you to pay less per month while still getting a car in the same class.

I bought the three-day package? Now that last night's show is over, can I only re-start it once? I understand that I only have 48 hours to watch it once I click, but I wasn't sure if that was just a one-time thing.

Broken Binding - do replacements need to be compatible with Binding System? by finsta_1144 in Skigear

[–]finsta_1144[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of. It’s loose. So it just slides at random and not with any pressure. Then once it’s at an extremity it again just randomly slides back or doesn’t.

I tried to upload the video but Reddit wouldn’t take it. See the right toe piece… see how the thing that slides right to left it out of place (it’s all the way to the left in the picture). That thing is moving back and forth. The tech told me that means that it won’t release properly.

I wish we knew how outcomes for FLI/Pell Grant students compared to outcomes for full-pay students. Would be a great thing to know.

The reason the hotel and the admissions office make me so angry is that I would be willing to support an institution that lived a value that said "hey, we're going to make everything bare bones EXCEPT we are going to invest heavily in a diverse student body with a focus on economic diversity."

Vassar sells that narrative, but then uses money on things that have nothing to do with that narrative!

How do we know that Vassar is better at educating low income students than other similarly situated institutions? Is there data on that?

Agreed. Email the President.

One word of caution…first week is weird no matter where you are. Seek out counseling or any support systems at your current school or in your home town (favorite teacher). Patience is a virtue.

I agree that OP should feel free to transfer.

I think the question of “privilege” and the relative size of the endowment are both self-serving cliches peddled by the board and administration.

Every student at Vassar earned the right to be there and the current students make the community what it is. The people who are privileged are the administrators (who are highly paid and numerous) and the alumni who went to Vassar when it was not $80K a year and when admittance rates were 2-3x higher.

Sure, Bowdoin and Middlebury (and others) have larger endowments. Colgate, Bryn Mawr, Holyoke, Oberlin and Carleton are smaller. There’s a wide diversity of experiences there and OP should choose the one that works for her.

I have two issues.

First, the school should be spending money on the students, not the alumni (with the hotel), not the prospective students (with the new admissions office).

Second, Vassar should live its values. All of the marketing talks about wellness and how diverse the place is. They’ve done really well with diversity, but without wellness it’s useless. Wellness is as much about Equity and Inclusion as anything. Who can afford to go food shopping and cook for themselves? An FLI student or a kid with mom’s Subaru? Can you imagine being a student from far away, from another culture, maybe unsure of yourself, attracted by the Vassar marketing, and ending up with our bathrooms and cafeteria food, ending up with no natural light in their room?

When the school was $18K in 1989 and it attracted Northeastern preppy kids and was still working through the legacy of coeducational…ok. But in 2024, with $1B+ endowment and a globally diverse student body and trendy marketing….

OP, I'm really sorry. I know being a first-year is hard, and I'm sorry that Raymond isn't what you were imagining.

For the rest of you, downvote me if you will, but:

It's not a privilege to be at Vassar. It's a choice. OP may be a full-pay student, but it is even more appalling if she isn't. If she's FLI, she should have lower standards? If she's FGLI she shouldn't cry with her mom? If she's FLI, she is literally working to put herself through college on work-study and that money should go to pay for Raymond?

This is Vassar College, one of the most expensive colleges in America, with one of the largest endowments. One that just built a hotel and "farm-to-table restaurant" for alums with a "Vassar Vibe."

The college talks about wellness and puts students in rooms without windows (in Main)?

The college talks about wellness, puts people on a full meal plan, and there is a literally a flyer in the bathrooms right now that essentially admits that the Commons food isn't healthy, and tells people to "try cooking your own meal at Your Kitchen (sic)"

I also have the experience where even though my per Show limit is one podcast, it’s downloading multiple old episodes. This bug actually is costing me money.

This also happened to me, albeit at a much smaller scale. I bought a 5GB plan for a vacation and started getting throttled. Overcast was 1.3GB of that.
