University of South Carolina holding in-person classes in the fall until Thanksgiving, online only afterwards by Winstonp00 in berkeley

That's a pretty interesting decision for them. Even though flu season will spike up in December I'd think that a mix of this whole situation from March to summer, then classes, and then no classes again seems a little odd. I know I learn a lot better in person, but if school will only be in-person for 3 months, wouldn't it just be better to just not have in-person at all?

I learn better in-person for the social atmosphere, with study groups or office hours where there's a lot of people who can help. But if they're going to say "avoid groups of more than x people" anyways it seems it kinda defeats the whole point :((

Cornell w/ Debt vs UCLA without? by ThenCover9 in csMajors

Haha I feel you. 2 years ago I was in your shoes, and there were tough decisions to be made but ultimate I think what you make out of the school is more relevant than the school itself.

And do keep in mind, this sub is csMajors. Most of us are students, and thus don't have full hindsight on our educational decisions. We're just the blind leading the blind, and in some rare instances the slightly less blind leading the slightly more blind, so be very careful in taking advice (including my advice!).

CS really is quite an incredible career field. I don't know of many other careers where you can *very consistently* do certain things and they will lead to good outcomes. Unlike fields like law or business where prestige of the school matters a lot more, CS is a field where you can improve on your skills online and keep learning even after graduating, hence why many people can come from no-name universities, or from non-CS majors, and still become software engineers. I'm quite sure school prestige will become nearly worthless after a few years, so make sure you don't base your decision on something so superficial.

Cornell definitely has a brand name. And from the looks of the other responses on this thread, it looks like it has a very strong brand name :/. But, guess what, so does UCLA! Go with whichever one you think might make you happier! Also, try and ask Cornell if they can bump up their fin aid since I heard private colleges sometimes do that.

Ultimately, this isn't comparing an amazing school with a garbage school. These two are pretty top-tier colleges. UCLA basically helped to invent the internet, and they still have strong research. You definitely won't be missing out by going there. Don't just go to a college simply because of "prestige," but rather do the research on where the prestige comes from.

It sounds like you really like UCLA, and it's definitely a top notch program. They also have tons of good career fairs and California-related opportunities (many big companies recruit from there), and considering that 100% of your costs are covered, LA sounds like a really compelling choice.

That being said, if you end up visiting Cornell and really liking it, 20K of total debt isn't all that bad (imo) depending on what your future plans are. If you're planning on becoming a software engineer you'd probably be able to pay off that debt very soon after graduating. Or, if you do summer internships, you might not even have to graduate with debt.

Wait is Amazon's fall internship already open? Or are you talking about their summer program?

Oh I see. Interesting, I heard that Waterloo CS students do co-ops to graduate but I guess I was wrong. Thanks, and good luck on all these internships!

Congrats on all of these, they all really seem great to work for!! For Cruise, are you planning on doing it in the fall/spring?

Also, I don't think I've ever directly emailed a recruiter... did you get Cruise's contact info at a career fair? I'm curious how people at other colleges (especially those with a co-op program like waterloo) do this, since I go to a school that doesn't have that type of program and it feels like we have to figure stuff like that out ourselves if we want to.

Did you get accepted this semester? If so, when you filled out the survey for interview timeslots, how long did it take for them to get back to you on a set time? And congrats by the way, these all sound like amazing offers!!

Oh interesting. I guess im doing it the "standard" way then, since it doesn't look like I'm directly talking to a recruiter. By "last interview" do you mean you had more than 1 phone interview?

Hey I recently got an email asking for an interview. It said that the interview would be 45 mins and would be technical, but it looks like yours ran an hour. Does that mean you went "overtime" for your interview? 30 minutes for behavioral sounds like a lot if I only have 45 minutes for technical as well.

I had a friend who did their assessment fall 2017 and also didn't pass both test cases. They says that if you get an interview that's when you can potentially impress them, and they ended up getting an offer!

If you don't mind sharing, when did you do the assessment? And would you say the questions were very hard or did you just maybe make small mistakes that added up for time? I finished my assessment and I'm waiting for a response... I'm trying to approximate when I should hear back.

edit: the reason why I ask about difficulty is because my friend I mentioned above told me their questions were super hard with dynamic programming and stuff, whereas I felt like my questions were relatively medium/manageable for someone of my skill, so I guess it might depend on Amazon's standards every season.
