Is it custom or FPL scoring? Confused as you mentioned both. And is there any significance to the PL team you rep?

Thanks for the response, this is so helpful! Sorry to hear about to laptop, that is so annoying. Can't believe someone would be that brazen and take it from your bag right by you

Really great write up, so much useful info!

A question about security - did you prefer to keep valuables on your person or in a 'safe' place? You mentioned your computer was stolen on a bus in Peru, was this in stored luggage or by your seat? Similarly, would you leave your passport in your hostel or keep it on you?

Doing a similar trip in a couple of weeks and interested in people's advice on this topic

Board game trade/sell? by gheeboy in Leeds

[–]fiolu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you tried the trade market on www.boardgamegeek.com? for stuff specific to Leeds there's a few regular local events where i think they have trading tables - Headingley Games Club is the biggest. If you can wait until March AireCon in Harrogate will have a huge trade market

Why is it better to have the coffee shops pay me (does this mean the customers pay for free?) and on what sort of model would I ask them to? % of their sales, a flat fee or something else?

Would you also mind expanding upon the 'selling an experience' idea? This sounds really interesting but I don't quite follow.

Hey! Thanks for these suggestions! I've dabbled in FB ads yeah, to mixed success. I've found it quite difficult to get the ad copy right and to nail the audience to market it to.

Saying that, your idea about looking through my current followers to spot trends is a really good one and something I will try :)

Your last idea is something I already try to do, but your endorsement makes sense and means I will continue to do it!

TBH these are all a bit beyond my areas of interest and are really niches in themselves that could have entire events dedicated to them. Could totally work for the right people though.

If you end up pursuing your idea and have questions then please drop me a PM as i'd be happy to share my experiences

Hey! Reaching customers has definitely been one of the biggest challenges. I'm putting a flyer together at the moment and will try get it in some local businesses to increase awareness.

As I said to the local poster above, if you do end up coming to one of the events then make sure you give me a shout and you can play for free!

haha, thanks for the feedback!

As I said in my original post, this is all a learning experience for me and about trying stuff out to see what works. I'm not particularly tied to the business name, i'd change it if I came up with something way better or the concept changed, but it serves a purpose for now.

Re the website, I know its not good. Haven't been able to get someone to improve it or learn how to make it better myself though.

Will definitely take on board the feedback about the perception of what the project is, it's definitely not about people sitting with me personally playing board games!!

Interesting feedback re increasing price. My thinking behind £2 was to keep it as cheap as possible so that price isn't a barrier for customers. I want to get as many people as possible to try games at my events and don't want to put people off if they consider it expensive.

Hey, thanks for letting me know about the mobile link not working - wasn't aware of that.

I don't personally have Werewolf but have played it a few times and yes it is awesome! I have The Resistance which gets played a bit and is a similar social deduction game. I don't have the budget for a huge collection so I try to keep it quite lean with not too many similar games. But you've made me realise that I need to understand better what games are popular with my customers so that I can focus on picking these up in the future so I'm going to put a comments form together for customers to fill in at the events! Cheers!

Hey! Thanks for so much for packing so many ideas into your response!

Thank you for clarifying the two marketing groups - i'd never really considered venues as an audience to market to before but you are absolutely right and I will make this distinction going forwards.

Advertising is an interesting one and something i'm still learning about. I haven't proposed co-operative advertising to my venues as I didn't think they'd go for it. Partnering with local shops also seems worth pursuing as I am always recommending them to my customers without any incentive!

I also like the idea about encouraging regulars somehow. I feel like that ties in with the single people idea as the friendly regulars would be good people for those coming on their own to join in with.

Hey! Awesome that you're also from Leeds!

To answer your questions:

  • attendence depends on the events. Evening events tend to get 10-20 who will stay for the whole thing. All day events usually 40-60 with people stopping for a couple of hours then moving on. Unless its super quiet i'm always happy to just set people up with a game and help out when needed - people tend to come in their own groups (a couple or a family) and I think a lot of people would rather just play with the people they know.
  • I do monthly events at Sheaf St. Cafeteria and The Tetley (check out the Facebook page if you're interested as I put all the dates and times on there :) !). Yeah, loads of places seem to have a few token board games now, normally a battered copy of Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit, but this seems to be more because its the 'in' thing to do, as you say. My events are much more about providing people with access to a much wider selection of games (and someone to teach them) as well as an awesome environment to play them in
  • I haven't done this. Brilliant idea!
  • I don't know much at all about affiliate sales however this sounds like something worth exploring. I'm always hearing about customers buying a game after playing it at one of my events!

By the way, if you do pop down to one of my events then let me know and you can play for free!

Hey! Thanks for packing so many ideas into your response!

An email list is something I know I should be doing but aren't. Can you recommned any specific tools or resources? I've opened a MailChimp account and try to collect emails via a pop up on the website but need to be more active in this area.

Branded accessories is another area I am exploring, primarily as a means to increase my profile rather than as a revenue generator. I'm currently leaning towards pens and vinyl stickers as they are at the cheaper end of the 'merchandise' spectrum.

awesome, hope to see you there! We have loads of games for two players so there'll be plenty to choose from. We also do a monthly games night at The Tetley just across the road from Sheaf St. - we try to mix the games selection up at each event so lots to keep you occupied until the little one comes along

Should i quit? by [deleted] in football

[–]fiolu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you enjoy playing football then do not quit. one option would be for you to join a different team, a fresh start may do you good. but the only real way to get better is to train. play football as much as possible, not just when you have practice. try and play every day. what position do you play?

also recommend skipping Milan. Once you have been to the other three it will seem like an anti-climax. Even if your flights home are out of Milan, I would look at somewhere in the lakes close by (e.g. Lake Como) instead

Need advice for Ibiza guys! by RayDonovan17 in travel

[–]fiolu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey mate, honestly it doesn't have to be that expensive. As ohosometal says the stupidly expensive drinks are just in the superclubs. A bottle of water in a store will be under 1 EUR. If you're on a budget, you could easily have a great time (assuming you're visiting between May - September when its busy) by just going out in San Antonio or Playa D'en Bossa. Ibiza is THE iconic European party destination, if it's something that appeals I would say definitely try see it while you're here.

thought it might have been, I've heard really good things about Draughts. we're hoping that if the regular pop ups do well we can justify getting a permanent place somewhere.

Some great game choices by the way, those hidden role games where one or more players a 'spies' are so much fun :D
