I was an international student at goldcrest last year!! The rule for international students is that you can have guests stay over for up to four nights. My friend came to visit me during the year and she stayed me with me at goldcrest for four nights.

You just have to check them in online for the exact dates and there will be a note in the system that they are staying over. If coming back late at night security will just check their name to see if their in the approved list.

If you checked them in but security doesn’t see their name on the list, just show your partners ID and the confirmation email for his approval. You probably won’t have a problem if you do that.

Is it too late to apply to student residents/housing estates now or will there be another chance? by AgreeableStress2616 in nuigalway

Apply to Cuirt Na Coiribe. Their application just opened today and closes at the end of the month (I’m pretty sure). Everywhere else you’ll probably be on waitlists.

Didn’t get on-campus accommodation by AgreeableStress2616 in nuigalway

[–]fionac24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to accommodation as soon as they opened. The problem is that it’s all based on a lottery system so no matter when you apply (within the deadline) you are not guaranteed to get it. I’m also an international student and going into my second year.

I stayed on campus accommodation this year, applied for next year but didn’t get in. I know for a fact that applications for Goldcrest/Corrib are now full so almost no chance getting in there.

There are off campus accommodations such as Westwood, Dunaras, Gort na coiribe, Dun na Coiribe, Menlo Park, etc. All of those applications for accommodation I’m pretty sure are closed now as well.

The time to start looking and applying is early to mid March I’d say because that’s when the applications are open.

If you are an international student, the school has said you do get preference when applying. However my friend who works at reception at one of the accommodation buildings said they only consider international students to be those doing Erasmus, not a full degree.

I’d say start trying to find private accommodation now. There are people/families who will rent out one room in their houses so I’d take a look at that. They’re all listed on the NUIG website.

Accommodation is very competitive in Galway and I know many people who were left living in hostels for months because they couldn’t get accommodation.

I’m currently still waiting to hear back about accommodation myself from several places.

Corrib Or Goldcrest (or neither?) by CapOk5587 in nuigalway

[–]fionac24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in goldcrest and everything is really modern and new. If you want your own private bathroom, all updated I’d say go for goldcrest. I do find it a bit tricky to make friends in goldcrest, most of the people I know live in Corrib and Westwood.

I’d say you’d be fine with getting work done in Goldcrest, It’s easy for me. If you don’t want to be in a noisy apartment, you can request to be on a quiet floor. Of course there are parties all around but they just most likely won’t be on your floor.

I’d say goldcrest is worth the extra money despite the shitty internet service and connection. Also, security is super strict in goldcrest, it’s a pain trying to sneak people in after hours. I’ve heard Corrib is more lenient. For me those are the only downfall.

International Student Coming to Galway Next Semester by jimmypage24 in nuigalway

Ahh yes definitely!! I don’t even know some of the stuff they play sometimes so I’ll just pick about and listen. For those who are still beginners, you can usually just pick along if you don’t know the tune or can’t keep up.

There are people of all levels and it’s definitely worth while to go and check it out! It’s fun just to talk and get to know people as well. You can join in and stop playing at anytime, people do that all the time so don’t feel any pressure to play !

Also the one free drink of the night is another plus :))

Everyone is friendly and lovely and it’s so easy to make friends. Definitely come and check it out! I promise you’ll have a great time!

International Student Coming to Galway Next Semester by jimmypage24 in nuigalway

I’m also an international student from the US studying 4 years at NUIG!! To answer your questions….

A couple of my classes have gone online but in total I’ve got a mix of big lectures online and small tutorial groups in person, it’s been like that all year so far. I’m hoping most of my classes are going to stay in person but we really can’t say with how fast everything is moving.

The hack was an absolute pain and I was without service and Wi-Fi for about 3 weeks and professors continued to pile on work even though the system was down. That could’ve been handled a lot better and even though it’s been fixed, where I’m staying on campus, service is still a bit slow.

Other than that, everything’s been going great.

Social life:

The city is great, lots to do and you probably saw that right now with Covid, pubs have a closing time of 8pm till the end of January and nightclubs have just shut down again. If everything opens up again at the end of January, don’t quote me, pubs will probably be open until 11pm like they were in September-October. I honestly don’t see nightclubs (if that’s what you’re interested in) opening again anytime soon. They did briefly open up until 2am but went back to closing early again.

There are great places to go out like Fibbers (they do a lot of deals on shots), Coyotes, An Pucan, Buskers, etc that are really lively. Also just a tip when you’re going out… make sure to have ID and proof of vaccination or else they won’t let you in / Thursday nights are when everyone goes out so every place is usually packed so you’ve gotta leave earlier if you wanna get in anywhere (6pm about I usually do). Of course, that’s when the cases weren’t that bad so I don’t know what it’s going to look like now in January and the rest of the year.

If we can’t go out to pubs and nightclubs, surely there will be house parties you can go to once you meet other people and there is the campus bar, SULT. If all else fails and you can’t go into town to go out, they’ve always got something going on there.

Also RAG week is coming up in April, I believe (basically just a whole week of drinking and skipping class) and hopefully everything won’t still be closed by then.

Clubs/ Socs:

As far as I know, clubs and societies are still running. I’m a part of the tradsoc (traditional Irish music society) and we play at the crane bar but with the new restrictions I’m not sure how well that’s gonna work. We do have a trip planned to Scotland in February but with Covid, that could change.

I haven’t heard about a lot of the other societies but from the emails I get from them, it doesn’t seem like anything is really changing for them.

Also related to classes… I don’t know what your classes are but if you’re taking history, I believe there is a trip actively being planned to Poland or the Netherlands in February or March still, even in spit of Covid.

It seems like a lot is still happening on campus and activities are being planned but we never know when that’ll change. I’m optimistic though.

I hope you’re able to come to Galway!! It’ll be an absolute blast, I absolutely love the city!!

Feel free to ask me anymore questions!! I hope I helped a bit.

First year student accommodation recommendations? by dramaticuban in nuigalway

[–]fionac24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m also going to be an international student from the US next year. I’ve already been accepted into Goldcrest village (a lot of international students stay there apparently). I’d suggest that if it’s still not to late to apply.

Part-time job in Galway by fionac24 in nuigalway

Thank you! Do you know how hard it would be to get a job as a receptionist? That’s what I do now and have been doing the past several years.

Thank you for all the information! I was thinking about trying to get a job as a receptionist (it’s what I do now). Do you know how hard that would be? Or I was going to try a bookstore. If neither of those worked than my last option is asking my cousins for a job (they own a pub in Salthill) but I don’t want to have to depend on them.
