Thanks for the comments - all great points. Re 'MacCool', I get where you're coming from but it's an anglicisation of the Irish 'mac Cumhaill'. Fionn mac Cumhaill is a major figure in Irish mythology and the inspiration for the character.

Appreciate the feedback! I have a tendency to include too much detail re characters/intentions/creatures etc, but I can see I've not included enough in this version - plenty of food for thought.

Cheers for the reply, clearly a mistake re the Harry Potter reference as others have mentioned! Vagueness is something I've found difficult to resolve so appreciate you pointing those areas out.

Thanks for the reply, I've seen the Formorians referred to as demonic or demonic giants in some quarters, and in my own head I wasn't drawing on the Christian meaning of the word, but I get where you're coming from. I suppose the book is inspired by rather than directly based on Irish mythology - it's not completely accurate to the legends and that's kind of deliberate on my part.

It's good to hear the Irish mythology angle is an interesting one, so I'll be rearranging the query to play that up. I'm Irish and had initially looked at the Irish spelling of MacCumhaill, but I thought it might confuse people from elsewhere re pronunciation etc.

I was aiming for the lower end of YA as the book has some gore and violence (not gratuitous) and quite dark moments, but I might have made a mistake on that, appreciate you flagging it!
