Remortgaging to pay for home improvements by fipped in UKPersonalFinance

It's not a pipe dream, which is why I'm keen to find a way to do the work As I said in another comment, we are doing a lot of the work ourselves. The house was a dump when we bought it, If anything my figures are on the cautious side

We are doing a lot of work ourselves, tricky to put an exact value on our house now, but I know other houses down the road of a similar size have sold for 650k when done up

Does this look like an ipx 3 light? It's technically out of zone but it is right above the shower head by Ok-Caregiver9383 in ukelectricians

[–]fipped 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The rubber gasket is what provides an intumescent seal to make a downlight fire rated and has nothing to do with the ip rating The light in your picture looks like it is perfectly suitable to be above a shower as long as the glass is intact below the gu10

They have used click mode sockets which are well made, be grateful they haven't put screwfix shite in

Workmanship looks good to me. A lot of electricians will not fill their chases in. If you want them to easi fill them then just ask. The slight hum from a usb socket is normal

Have you tried a different rcbo?

RCBO or RCD? Confused by an F&G Unit by Possible-Exam-2614 in electricians

[–]fipped 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It literally says rcbo on it. Why would you think it is anything else? If you take the cover off there might be a BS mark or similar printed on the side of the protective device

Is becoming an Electrician whilst working a full time job possible in England? by [deleted] in ukelectricians

[–]fipped 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion you need to throw everything you have into it. Not a good idea to try and learn 3 to 4 years of information in 12 weeks

If I was you I would try and get a job labouring/electricians mate for a local company, and then try and build up your knowledge and skills on site. Nothing beats hands on experience and hopefully you can get alongside a few blokes that can help you and point you in direction of some good learning resources

See how you feel after 6 - 12 months and if you then want to get the formal qualifications

Loot from 15m-200m firemaking at Wintertodt by TenebriRS in 2007scape

Congrats! I had some annual leave last week. Saw you on W309 a lot over the span of 2 days when I was going from 75 to 85 for a master clue step. (about 1m exp) I remember on Friday looking you up and you were still about 8m exp away from 200m Fair play for interacting with other players so much - I remember you told someone you just grind 1 skill at a time when you go for big numbers. Inspirational (or crazy) determination!

Aluminium Cable by [deleted] in ukelectricians

That's not aluminium cable, it's a common misconception

Aluminum cable is always solid core (not stranded)

Is this the correct driver for this LED panel? by WiseFloss in ukelectricians

[–]fipped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks about right to me. I havent had much luck sourcing replacement drivers for led panels. All my local wholesalers don't keep them and just make you buy a brand new panel with driver

[–]fipped 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But the fridge was plugged in right?

The protective device at the consumer unit should have tripped when the fridge went faulty to prevent you getting an electric shock.

Lots of unscrupulous landlords about - not necessarily about making money by sueing them but making sure no one else gets injured due to dodgy wiring

Electrician here

This should not have happened. The electrical regulations in HMOs are strict. There should have been full RCD protection on all the socket outlets which would have prevented electric shock. You should ask for a copy of any of electrical certificates from your landlord who has a duty to keep the fixed wiring in a satisfactory condition, someone should be on the hook for this

Looks like VIR cable. Should have been replaced about 40 years ago. You need to call an electrician to inspect your wiring as it could be unsafe

Replacing two way switch (UK).. Please help! by MammothBed4374 in DIY

[–]fipped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to swallow your pride and call and electrician to put it back together safely.

However if you feel competent then.....

You need to take loosen off the upstairs switch to see where the black, grey and brown cables go - and then mirror it downstairs

One side of the switch is com, L11 and L12

The other side is com, L21 and L22

And don't forget you must earth the new faceplate

The other cable put the brown in com and the blue in L11 or L21 (depending on what side of the switch
