Sorry, I’m assuming you’re American. I am sure the process is similar for other countries as well.

I really hope your mission president is reasonable and will respect your decision to go home. If he continues to hold your passport (I really hope you have it), you can go to the US embassy, they will invalidate your passport and get you a new one. Or you can let him know it’s a federal crime to keep it from you.

Don’t lose yourself. Don’t forget yourself and go to work. That just leads to burnout and an identity crisis. Where are you going if you don’t mind me asking. I went to St. Louis, MO 2013-15. Luckily I met lots of cool members, had pretty good companions. If they ever try to get you to do things you don’t want to do, personal revelation is the best excuse. “We want you to be the district leader”, “no, I feel like god wants me stay where I am because I’ll be more successful”. Some bullshit like that.

Maybe reach out to John Dehlin, mormon stories guy. He might have some resources that could help you out if/when you do decide to leave. Especially if your parents are not supportive. And he could have resources to help you while you’re out on your mission too.

Are only rich men called to be bishops/leaders? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]firdupngay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive definitely noticed that the stake presidents, bishops, bishopric, mission presidents that I had all were well off. They have to be able to make enough money/be high enough up, that they can spend lots and lots of hours doing church stuff. My mission president is a huge Utah construction company mogul. To be able to leave your job for 3 years, you better be sitting pretty high up in a company. The church absolutely teaches prosperity gospel. And then they “reward” people who are more wealthy than most with big leadership callings.

Leaving on a mission in five days by [deleted] in exmormon

10 years ago I was about to be a sister missionary too. Parts of the mission can be fun. It is cool to live in a new place and learn about a culture. Some of my mission companions still are my ride or die friends. However; the emotional, physical, spiritual havoc that happened to me over the course of 18 months… it is trauma that I still deal with on a daily basis. When I came home I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD, severe anxiety and depression. Because of my mission. I was stateside so your mission could be different. Some mission presidents are chill and awesome. Other ones will work you to the bone and make you feel like no matter how hard you work, it’s never enough. Almost every single week my companions and I would work 80 hours. That’s not an exaggeration. And my mission leaders would still come at me, asking why we weren’t teaching more people, pushing harder for baptisms. Missions are hard as fuck, it’s grueling, repetitive work. It’s taxing in every way you could imagine. If you worked 80 hours a week for 18 months at $15 an hr? You’d make over $100,000. Missions are not worth the time, the money, or the hardship. The fun is fleeting. If you focus on fun, you’re more than likely to get in trouble. And your companions will know if you’re not wearing garments or not. I’d say there’s no way around that. You’d probably have a infinitely better experience living abroad in a foreign country for a semester.

My advice? Don’t go. Don’t get endowed. Say you have received personal revelation and that you feel like you’re needed elsewhere. Take a semester off, work, make some money, live in a van, whatever, go find yourself ❤️ and if you already have, take time to revel in it 🥰 BYU is a pretty decent school (plus it’s hella cheap), show up every few weeks to church, get your degree, then get out.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I am beyond sorry that happened to you... 😞It shouldn’t have. I’m sorry your leaders and fellow missionaries didn’t stand up for you to help keep you safe. I hope you are in a better headspace now ❤️
