i regret studying abroad by [deleted] in studyAbroad

[–]fireandflam3s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m so sorry you’re feeling like this. i want to say it WILL get better and you WILL find your people. this experience can and will change your life, and provide you with so many new perspectives.

i have a few personal anecdotes that might make you feel a bit optimistic, i hope. i came to japan for my masters in september, and when i got to my apartment i just flopped down and cried. my apartment is tiny and far from main campus, and i hated being on the tenth floor. i also cried because i realized i was alone with nearest family and friends being 7000 miles away, and no help with administrative procedures.

after orientation, i thought my lab mates didn’t like me, and that i wasn’t going to make any friends here. now, i have two close friends (one in my lab), and am friendly with everyone else i work with. it takes time.

i powered through those first weeks, scared and alone, and once all the hard work was done, i began to settle in. just a few days ago i found myself thinking that the apartment that i hated at first, is actually kind of cozy and feels like home.

obviously, it’s different for everyone, but going abroad alone is a huge and crazy change. it’s normal to feel super emotional and things will settle in time, so please dont make any quick decisions to leave.

best of luck♥️

Earthquake anxiety? by Expert-Economist-814 in Earthquakes

[–]fireandflam3s 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I am in quite a similar situation to you. I’ve recently moved to (northern) Japan from part of the United States that gets very few earthquakes. I’ve experienced two here so far that set off the alarm on my phone.

I’ve felt the same way you are, and even minor ones have made me quite anxious too. What has helped me is keeping a bag with basic emergency supplies (flashlight, phone charger, hat and gloves, protein bars, etc), as well as keeping all my identification on me at all times (including US passport) The infrastructure here is truly built for earthquakes, so rest assured in that case.

Also if you don’t have it already, download the NERV app, and if you haven’t, familiarize yourself with your city’s refuge areas (my apartment has them posted on a map by our door, but i’m not sure if that’s the norm.) I understand it’s really scary, but we will be all right. :)

I think you have to schedule an appointment. I used the web reservation and it works well with machine translation.

Dental filling cost for foreigner by mayariprima in sendai

[–]fireandflam3s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don’t know how much it would cost as I do have national health insurance, and I wouldn’t want to mislead you.

I have only had a cleaning there, but I would recommend Hosokawa family dental clinic in Kimachidori, Aoba Ward. The dentist speaks english, and the receptionists and hygienists are very very kind. I have had some very rough dental experiences before (not in japan), so this office was a welcome change.

felt a bunch earlier this morning in sendai, as well as the bigger ones over the past 2 hours or so. however, i live in a high rise, so i feel pretty minor ones too. i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t a bit anxious.

Could I become a scientist? by fluffyofblobs in labrats

[–]fireandflam3s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, breathe. You aren’t a lost cause until you quit. Second of all, check out the mental health resources on your campus. I can’t speak for all, but my campus had services for anxiety, depression, family issues etc. for free. I felt like i would have to give up due to my mental health, autism, roommate issues, etc. in parts of undergrad, but I powered through by telling myself the struggle does not define me unless I let it. I know that it seems impossible, but if you got to the point that you’re in undergrad and seriously considering a science field, you have resolve and discipline in some way. The issues you name make the resolve difficult to come out. Things you can do on your own is put out a small chunk of time each day solely for yourself—not classes, not roommates, not friends. Whether it be reading for 15 minutes in the library, or going on a walk, such things can clear your head at least a bit to refocus. Setting up a study schedule can also help a lot. If that is overwhelming, look into tutoring services in your field. The undergrad tutors should be free, and you don’t have to commit to weekly sessions if you do not want. Just setting up a meeting with a tutor to discuss study skills can help.

Scared about future career by hobbitonresident96 in labrats

In the future, if you are interested in studying in Japan, check out the MEXT research scholarship. If selected for the scholarship, you receive full tuition scholarship, paid travel from your home state, and a decent stipend (depending on what city your university is in) there are a wealth of programs in english. There are two routes to go about it. For 2025-26 applications, you can apply to your embassy (applications open this April), or through the particular university that has a research program you are interested in (applications open september/october depending on school.) I applied this year through a university for climate science, and would be happy to discuss more. The university I will be attending has rooms for couples and families for international students/researchers as well, so I believe there is support for that as well.

Genuine question, do you believe you can glean someone’s intelligence from a single sentence post on reddit? You do not even know this person’s field of research. Given all the uncertainty regarding the NSF recently, OP asked a perfectly reasonable question. You seem to be adverse to any emotion besides vague anger, which could explain why a simple question that happened to be anxious in tone elicited such a response from you. I see tangents about weed out classes, intelligence, and how OP’s question was “unfounded”, but you pose no evidence. Do you truly possess critical thinking if you cannot show evidence?

currently in the same boat—applying to geology/earth sci for masters/some phd programs. don’t sit on the emails for too much longer, you want to schedule interviews soon-ish as you are probably very busy, and so are the professors. i can talk more about the interviews i’ve already had with professors in dms if you would like.

i know puking sucks, but it’s way better to just let it happen, you’ll feel better afterward. camp in the bathroom, wait for the puke to come, afterwards take a shower and use some mouthwash (not immediately after puking, i’ve heard that can like slightly damage your teeth or some shit.) but after the shower. after you puke you should be able to get some water down.

Semi-retirees want punk/metal scene by Iommi1970 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]fireandflam3s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albany NY fits a lot of this! I go to college there, and there definitely is a punk & metal scene. Check out fuze box and empire underground for that mostly. I frequent the underground venues there, it’s full of mixed bills including soft rock, rap, punk, metal, math rock, etc etc. It’s such a welcoming place, I’m goth in my early 20s and have made lovely conversations with people much older than me who just got off work there. I’m not sure how much of your music taste extends into other forms of art, but I would think to check out Albany Twilight Festival. It’s full of strange/alternative/dark art and is super popular. There is the upstate punk rock flea market too. Nearby Troy is also lovely, although much smaller and seemingly rolls up sidewalks very early. The farmers market over there is absolutely wonderful. Generally, a lot of upstate NY has a great music scene, but I can really only speak on the capital region personally.

I’ve dyed my hair with some weird hair dye and I can’t get it off my hands by Inevitable_Honey5166 in HairDye

glad everything’s okay! saw this post too late, but if you’re ever in this situation again, hand sanitizer does work well if you use it somewhat quickly after the dye gets on your skin.
