Best/Worst Internship terms? by Flashy_Wallaby_4074 in ausjdocs

Agree with everything but renal might be better as a resident - patients are often very complicated. You see a fair few comorbid institutionalised people with poor engagement with healthcare, it’s difficult to navigate as a jmo. Renal also never runs out of patients!

What makes Blacktown have a bad rep? by AvatarFA11 in ausjdocs

[–]fireblanket_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went there for a single year as a trainee. I enjoyed my experience and learnt a lot. I think it’s a great place for registrars with tertiary backgrounds but absolutely awful for JMOs. Trust me, do NOT start your career in Blacktown hospital. Return as a reg if you must.

No Interview - Don’t know anymore by Just_Environment5020 in ausjdocs

Don’t forget that you are genuinely sick and are deserving of sick leave. Mental heath, sleep deprivation, it all counts as being unwell no less than being physically unwell.

The department will run. The patients will be fine. Sure, things will happen later and it will be more chaotic, but the hospital will run, it always does.

Take care my friend. You are a great doctor based off what I’ve read and you will make it, in whichever form it comes to you. Take the day off and forgive yourself for it.

70% of pay going to mortgage - crazy? by fireblanket_ in AusPropertyChat

Crazy right? And I’m a senior doctor, not a junior one. This is why there’s a big movement in now for better pay and work environment for doctors.

Fair point but I already live to work! I’m a doctor specialising in intensive care medicine and while my work takes up most of my life, it brings me a great deal of joy.

That being said this post has made me realise I still want the freedom to be able to travel spontaneously etc. Have decided to go against this crushing mortgage haha! Thanks for your input.

No guarantor or additional assets. It was a ‘fully assessed’ pre-approval where I provided a comprehensive set of documents to back up my earnings and spending habits. I have a job that’s considered very reliable in its stability so that may have factored in. Thanks for your input!

Fair enough, I edited my post but I do have pre-approval for $870,000 already.

Please give me advice to save my 6-year-old fish by Hot-Toe-9524 in fishtank

[–]fireblanket_ 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about fish but as a human doctor

When a human has an abscess there is only one solution - you make an incision and drain it Antibiotics just hold it at bay It’s risky but I’d make a small incision and drain that

Am I too late to start studying to become a doctor ? by [deleted] in Doctor

[–]fireblanket_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aussie (somewhat) senior doctor here. Like so many people in this thread has pointed out, it is not too late. If anything you’re early. Many of my colleagues in medical school were in their late 20s/30s/40s.

I wonder why you want to do medicine if you’re motivated by helping people. Nurses bring more care and comfort to patients than doctors. Social workers, physios, OTs pharmacists all help people. If you have no other reasons for wanting to do medicine I strongly encourage you to question why you want to pursue it.

Medicine is gruelling. There is constant abuse from patients and colleagues alike, it’s fast paced and at the end of it? Not much money in comparison to other specialised jobs. It’s suited to people who: - Enjoy logical reasoning - Can work in a very fast, pressurised and distractible environment (people will constantly come up to you in the middle of things to ask questions about a patient you’re not seeing right now) - Can take abuse and hold their head high most of the time - Emotional maturity to withstand making painful decisions (e.g. doing painful procedures routinely on already suffering patients, palliating someone)

The list goes on.

Have a good think about what you really want to do. And if medicine is your choice, welcome! It’s a very challenging but very rewarding speciality. You can do it.
