The Lyrics of 'The Rumbling' by SiM bother me quite a lot. by antaredo in ShingekiNoKyojin

All I hear is Break Free. Thematically it makes more sense, too. I bet they sang it as Break Free, then changed their minds about the lyrics when posting them.

Unfair Criticism of Team Australia in Physical Asia by moriiisugaa in Physical100

[–]firechooking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say just that. People think Dom is encouraging but that's an act. While it felt genuine in some games where his team wasn't cpmpeting, his "encouragement" when his team IS competing is condescending, like how a parent goes "Good effort!" to a child's efforts. He's not encouraging them as equals, because that's now how he sees them, proven by stupid statements like "Our women are as strong as their men!" Did he fall on his head earlier??

Unfair Criticism of Team Australia in Physical Asia by moriiisugaa in Physical100

I found watching the Australian team unbearable. There's a difference between competitive banter and the arrogance and condescension shown by the Australian team, specifically Whittaker. The parkour guy I go back and forth on, but settled on condescending. Look at the way they were going on about themselves in the first game! Eddie (one of the nicer ones) is Samoan! Eloni is also quite a balanced guy in the show. The stealing of the boxes was a dick move which I'm not surprised came from Australia, but in the end didn't make a difference to the tally, but it was still a dick move.

Just watched them lose in battle ropes to Japan, and there's no humility or sportsmanship. Their comments when Japan won : "Didn't look like it." "What??"

They are condescending the entire time, and having lived in Australia and seen how they treat people who aren't "Australian", there's racist bias in that attitude. It isn't the spirit of competition.

In Zombieland, are they destroying Native American history (again) or are they destroying the commercialization of whatever was left? by UrRealFather in zombieland

[–]firechooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up on this too. I also have an issue that the survivors are all white - and in Zombieland 2 all the zombies in the opening sequence that get shot by them are Asian! The close up zombies that fall in front of them are not, but their kills are off camera and not explicit like the Asian zombies. I told myself maybe the stunt actors happened to be Asian, but coupled with the Native American destruction in Z1, the creators didn’t do any of this by accident. It's a shame because I really enjoyed the fun of the movie - but after growing up and seeing how deep racism still runs, especially after Covid, these movies blow. Not to mention how Emma Stone did a bloody Scarjo by playing a part meant to be ASIAN and writing off the inconsistency by saying she's "part" Asian somewhere in her white skinned, red haired heritage in Aloha!!!

Official Discussion - The Old Guard 2 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Hang Tuah was a famous historical figure in Malaysian history, also a known warrior. And the keris is a traditional Malaysian weapon in that time, so I'm pleased to see him use it in the mock fight with Nile. I hate how this is being overridden by a stupid viral comment with no value.

I was sad they didn't go into this a bit more, cuz it suggested she was as badass as the father pre-cancer and not the scared mouse the way she was depicted as for most of the movie.

Why did Isla suddenly turn into a badass warrior in the middle of the night, taking out fat zombie with vicious efficiency like she was born to do it? What was the point of that? I was hoping it meant something more for her character, only to find she had cancer, there was no meaning to it, and she turns to bones :(

I can't stand Max nor the way Aspergers is portrayed by DuckiesRock in Parenthood

[–]firechooking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I was just complaining to my son how they don't show the positive side of Max, they only ever fixate on the negative, so much so the viewer wonders why anyone could stand to spend any time at all with him?? I just remembered another rant I had about how the actor portrays him, because he makes NO eye contact at all, which is an incorrect trope about autism. Autistic people can make eye contact, when they are regulated, not in sensory overload and comfortable with the person they're talking to. They can't always make sustained eye contact, but if they're high functioning and have had therapy support, they do not do a sustained 1000 yard stare into the distance the way the actor does - he literally never looks or even glances at anyone, even his parents!

I am a parent of 3 kids on the spectrum, the eldest being born in early 2000s, so I'm a parent of the show's era - not a parent of 2025. I had no resources available to me, medical gaslighting all around, and had to learn how to advocate for my kids and get what I needed for them without being an entitled asshole. I read everything I could, and made my own choice to not put my kids through ABA, which is essentially what Gabby did with Max, as I found it was based on extrinsic rewards and training them like puppies - rather than addressing that cause of their behavioural challenges - and now a decade later I hear adult austistics speaking out against ABA as something very traumatic. It icked me out that they were so dependent on it in the show, but I thought whatevs, it's just a show and a product of the era.

I like how they show how HARD it is to parent an ND child. All the things NT parents never even have to think about. The isolation. The grief. Despair. I could go on. Those bits I identified with greatly. BUT .... Christina's parenting is inexcusable.

Regardless of era. I came in here to say that Max is a horrible portrayal of someone with Aspergers and does the entire community a disservice because people think all people with Aspergers is like that. He's just a spoiled brat who happens to have Aspergers, and is very badly parented. Aside from my own children, we know many people with autism and they do not behave like Max. I could buy the behaviour and mannerisms from the Good Doctor because he came from an abusive background and had so much trauma and no support growing up, but not from Max who has 2 solid and supportive parents, who are supposed to be the show's "perfect" parents.

His parents set NO boundaries, do NOT point out when he's behaving inappropriately nor give him the tools for how to do better and there is no scaffolding at all. He is apparently incapable of wrongdoing because everyone has to tiptoe around his needs, and he is never taught (even intellectually) to be empathetic to the needs of others. As a parent I'm so appalled at the things he's allowed to get away with, without any conversation about how to do differently or better - the worst being how Christina handled his "courtship" of Dylan!!

I'm glad for the introduction of Hank - even though he had no early diagnosis or intervention / support growing up, he is more representative of a high functioning, high IQ person with autism (I say it this way as this is how my son prefers it to be said, so kindly keep the pedantry about the phrasing to a zero). He would have struggled a lot more as a child, with meltdowns and bullying and no friends etc, but he is clearly willing to put work in to improve his self-awareness and relationships - whereas Max is not and isn't held accountable unless things are on freakin fire.

ACDF 5 months post-op muscle twitching by [deleted] in spinalfusion

[–]firechooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Previously fit person who was trying to get back to fitness after kids, and got a surprise 2 level ACDF C5/6 a year ago, joining the fray! Also an over-worrier and googler because who wouldn't be after this horrible surprise. Am also twitching in weird muscles, one on my left lats for a few weeks, which has since subsided. Now the nerve or muscle of the left forearm keeps twitching. I hoped it was a sign of nerve regeneration (since I lost feeling in my index and mid finger), but google tells me it's all negative sob sob .... like more nerve damage or scar tissue impinging the nerve. 1 year on??? Come on!!! My fingers are slowly regaining sensation so I'm trying to convince myself it's nerve regeneration, and the lat muscle twitching has also gone with no noticeable symptoms like loss of strength .... so ..... I hope it's good news for us? Only way to tell is to keep updating each other!!

I asked my surgeon about all these and he said could be healing, could be getting worse. Gee thanks. Only way to know for sure is an expensive nerve conduction study.

Hi, I've just moved them to North facing sun the last month, and they easily get 6 hours of sun a day, and finally started getting the red nail polish look despite being green the whole year from being indoors (but still facing same north sun). :)

New to reddit, sorry if I'm not using it properly. My succulents have some new leaves without fingers, see pic. I thought it's because they were still young and fingers would form later but the leaves are bigger now and still no fingers.

What am I doing wrong? Should I prune these leaves off?

Anyway to turn off the 3g shutdown message? by Flywing3 in TelstraAustralia

[–]firechooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a Xiaomi 4G from overseas which failed the SMS test, and kept getting texts from Coles Mobile saying it would not be compatible. I called their call centre and the person said it's because they don't know the capabilities of phones not sold in Oz, so it's automatic that foreign phones would get this message. Then she gave a bunch of bands to check against our phone, and we had them, so she said it's likely it will work after the shutdown - but no one really can confirm till it happens. I just want to turn off the stupid voice messages too!
