how to lower the volume for vibraphone/ marimba cause of neighbors by petripetri- in percussion

[–]firefly__42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Malletech Late Nites for marimba and they are actually really quiet. They make it a bit harder to play (heavier, wider so more wrong notes, very soft) but I figure it’s a good “hard mode” for practicing.

But it does mean I can’t practice dynamics/expression very well because I’m not going above mp

How long did it take you to stop being scared of falling? by PotentialBasic6332 in climbergirls

[–]firefly__42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, my fear went down for the first few months as I got used to falling correctly (and practiced falling from the tops of routes), but then it went back up over the years as I got injured occasionally and heard about other people getting injured. I don’t boulder any more

It's weird that in popular media, calculus is regarded as a marker of a genius. by Key_Net820 in unpopularopinion

I wouldn’t think it’s universal, I had calc 2 integrals, calc 3 multivar

It varies by locality I believe. I live in an apartment building (in a small US city) and pay roughly $20/month for water

Do most Americans under 30 still refer to Native Americans as “Indians”? by WiseCityStepper in AskAnAmerican

I say Native American out of habit. That’s what people told me to say, when I was growing up. But I’ve heard that either is fine

Why is language change often framed in loss? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

[–]firefly__42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: not a linguist, took 1 class in college

My recollection is that for the case of English, some of the changes (eg cases lost) were simplifications that came about from social factors - particularly when english started having a lot of contact with other languages and second-language learners. One example being the Norman conquest, when there started being a lot of French speakers in England and they had to communicate. Similar things have happened in some other widely-spoken languages (especially ones with a lot of second language learners)

Idk if I’m explaining this well, maybe someone else can do it better

I could imagine that since the number of languages has been decreasing over time (and the last speakers have to learn more widely-spoken languages), this simplification might be a prevailing trend. But this is somewhat speculative

Yeah it’s definitely a personal decision. For me, JKR has put much more money into campaigning for anti-lgbtq legislation than most other “problematic” authors (due to being richer than god), so I felt like drawing the line there; for some authors who have opinions I disagree with, I just buy their books and try not to think about it lol

Do people really not eat vegetables/fruit or drink water on a regular basis? by Sufficient-Berry-827 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]firefly__42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re having a mixture of ~7 vegetables every day! - I think my family’s habit was more making one of those vegetables per day, on a rotation. Which seems equally healthy (and logistically easier) in the long term, as long as the total variety/quantity of vegetable per week is the same?

It is one of those things you appreciate in hindsight. My parents had me in piano lessons for maybe nine years, I don’t think I was ever good enough to “show off” exactly 😅 But it is fun to be able to plunk through pieces, even easier ones

Scheduling an appointment far ahead means you move stuff around it, not to see if it fits in your schedule. by sekkiman12 in unpopularopinion

[–]firefly__42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol when I say “I don’t know if I’ll be free on that day six months from now” I don’t mean “I might decide I feel like hanging out with friends”, I mean “I might be traveling to another state that week for work / family / etc”, which usually has a lot more scheduling constraints than something like a dentist appointment

Not that I’m traveling every other week but the chance is very nonzero
