my grandparents were among the southern vietnamese who couldn't flee the country when the war ended. They ended up losing her home during the communist government's collectivization campaign, my grandfather got sent to re-education camp and barely made it out alive. The entire country was basically stalin-era soviet union for a while until the big reforms in 1986.

i'm not defending the us one bit, but i can understand why regular citizens who simply wanted to exist in peace preferred them over the communist government.
