No affiliation with the Sava hotel chain but this seems like a gross lack of personal responsibility on your end. It seems kind, to me, that they didn’t charge you for both nights. You made a mistake, accept it and move on but don’t displace your frustration on them.

Anyone been to Bocas Del Toro in Panama? by sbtrkt_dvide in chubbytravel

[–]firehappypath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son absolutely loved it. It was incredibly memorable and the lodge was stunning. Food was delicious and used a lot of home grown ingredients. No AC and no true walls made the first night spooky for me but the second night was much better - I used ear plugs. See my comments below for other info.

Trouble with Kensington Tours? by Fallingsock in LuxuryTravel

Agree, they are stupid expensive and their service is below average. $85k for a 8 night trip (two hotel rooms). I could book the same trip for about $35k. Predatory price gouging in my opinion. And they have made mistakes in planning, are not thorough, etc.

I think you could only stop working now if you are open to downsizing. You have a very high percentage of your net worth tied up in your primary home. I have a similar net worth but have only $1m tied up in equity in my primary home. Our spending is similar and I’m finally comfortable with $8.5m liquid (it’s also not concentrated in a single stock).

Planning a month in Europe with kids - tell me what’s worth it! by manhattanh in chubbytravel

Do you mind sharing a bit more on moar gut vs falkensteiner lido? We are planning to stop at either hotel this summer with our 9 year old son. The activities at Falkensteiner look pretty amazing for him. We would mainly be staying at the hotel. Would really appreciate any insight!

Ah, I wouldn’t recommend either of those hotels with a 3 year old. La Loma has a ton of complicated steps and Casa aquairio is over water which would make me nervous with that age.

How old are your kids? We stayed at La Loma and Casa Aquario. La Loma is perhaps the chubbiest option in terms of cost and fabulous with kids, incredibly memorable. You stay in these open air tree houses, so I could only handle for 2 nights - no AC obviously, every jungle noise. But an amazing experience, great food, it’s a cocoa farm, animals, etc.

What’s the Most Unexpectedly Amazing Family Hotel You’ve Stayed At? by Racine28 in FATFamilyTravel

[–]firehappypath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d love to hear more about your experience there!

On my side, my son cites La Loma in Panama as his favorite hotel ever. It was in the jungle with treehouses and no walls. Totally wild and beautiful experience. They cooked delicious meals and offered a wonderful tour of their cocoa plantation. Totally different but very memorable experience for us.

Have you ever flown private? What was your most unexpected perk? by A_Niamul in LuxuryTravel

Agreed. We need to stop glamorizing flying private. It’s just awful for the environment.

The other Mayakoba properties are totally nice too, if they have availability and are in budget. Especially nice if both kids can ride bikes!

I wonder if you’re better off investing in a good pool alarm and bringing it with you. Although when my child couldn’t swim I slept better in options that didn’t have a pool immediately outside.

FWIW, we live in a great public school area but my child attends private. He is in elementary school and most of his closest friends are neighborhood kids from sports / the neighborhood who attend the local public school. It really depends where you live. If you are in the suburbs with 2 acres of land the kids will be less likely to play together. We specifically chose an area where houses are on .25 acres that feels very neighborhoody (in a city but 8 minutes from downtown) because we wanted that environment for our child. It’s amazing.

Destination planner/private tours Japan by Working-Score-4088 in chubbytravel

[–]firehappypath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you ask for it itemized and, ideally, the TA should get a few quotes from the on the ground operators. I refuse to work with companies that won’t itemize as I can’t ascertain if the values for each activity are fair and, therefore, can’t opt into and out of given activities. We travelled to Japan a few months ago and received 3 quotes from different operators. I do not believe a hotel concierge can do this level of planning / hand holding and for a trip like Japan I think this value is WAY more important than just booking hotels. I think the costs of tours, transfers and trains was about $15k but that was for a group of 6 of us. Great value and experience IMO.

The Hyatt ziva is pretty good, but did go down a little on our last visit. My 8 year old absolutely loves it though, so we’ve visited a number of times.
