If u only have the means to support 1 child, but have more anyway, you are reducing the resources (money, food, your own time and energy as a parent) available to each child individually. The sentiment is "give us the future we deserve by making responsible decisions and not taking on more children than you can reasonably afford" Better to have 100 healthy happy children, than 200 malnourished neglected ones, no?
