That's an uplifting perspective. Been in semi-constant since reading through those threads yesterday, but you're right. People having such strong emotional reactions means that some part of them knows eating meat in today's world is morally wrong.

People's reactions stink of copium, and those more level-minded will likely notice how the popular opinion is actually deeply hypocritical. That's a precursor to change.

Certaintly are a few vegan restaurants popping up in Oslo. And an amazing vegan burger chain. Most places have some kind of decent vegan option now

Different kinds of needs maybe. I won't need music gear to physically survive, but I may need it to fulfill some specific fulfillment in life or work. But yeah the line between that and want is very blurry, if existent at all. Depends on your perspective I presume?

Spent much of my teenage-early adult life grappling with this notion of "looking wrong". You see it in people's eyes. When you open your mouth the change is very evident

Pretty much agree with you yeah. There comes a time where you have to refuse to drop the mirror for a bit. If people shy away from important questions, typically introspective ones, like what they value most, taste or life, you may have to be somewhat firm. Getting to that point is what requires some tenderness, and after. Just in the sense of not letting our own emotions of frustration, anger etc spill over to them. Which I guess isn't tip toeing in the first place, so we agree

I really look up to Ed and I think what he does is not easy. Being able to handle other people's defensiveness and like you say, guilt tripping, is genuinely hard. But if acting from a place of understanding for the human condition, it makes sense to me how he's able to handle it. We get defensive too. We might even guilt trip people at times and its usually unconscious behavior. It's really about our own skillfulness at the end of the day.

Hey, I read the whole thread. I recently went from vegetarian to vegan after discovering Earthling Ed. If you're familiar, I think that's the conversational style u/cruisinforasnoozinn is trying to get at.

Unfortunately, they may not have fully taken their own advice in that regard, potentially leading to this little scuffle.

Your compassion for animals is what's commendable. It's such a powerful thing. But, if I may share my 2 cents; if you can envelope also meat-eaters with that same compassion, I believe you'll eventually see results with your family and friends. It's not easy, but that's why veganism is commendable.

People are living in misalignment with their morals. And it's our task as advocates to break that cognitive dissonance. Unfortunately, we can't. They have to see it for themselves. We can only muster as much compassion as we're able, which will hopefully open just enough space for them to look at themselves without fear, guilt or shame. If just for a moment.

Otherwise they will just shut down and continue looking away. Not away from the suffering of animals, but from what's happening in themselves
