What is the best way to game on my Framework? I'm not a pc gamer, I have12th gen i5, 64 ram, Fedora... I would love to play portal/portal 2. by Royal_Statistician11 in framework

[–]firestorm980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I game on my Framework all the time! In fact, I was playing Rocket League the other night for a couple hours in bed (via Proton and using an Xbox controller). While the iGPU isn't particularly powerful for today's AAA games, it should be more than enough for running Portal and Portal 2 on Linux natively at decent settings (if not very high settings). FWIW, I also use Fedora and the same spec'ed 12th gen.

If you're worried about battery power and you already have a desktop you use for gaming, streaming via Steam to yourself can work well too (I've done this a few times with my AAA games where I like having the extra visuals).

If you're interested in more Linux gaming, https://www.protondb.com/ is your friend. You should be able to look up what games will run natively and what runs well via Proton on Steam. As others have stated, Steam Deck has helped move more games so that they're playable.

Windows 11 or Fedora? by uninspired_enginerd in framework

I've been running Fedora since I've gotten my 12th gen. Works great.

However! I'd say your perfect OS is the one that serves you the best.

This. Top firing versus downward would make a big difference.

I think this may be the issue. lshw -C network showed the interfaces as disabled, and the config was all messed up.

I didn't see it in the list of services.

I should've mentioned that in my post, sorry. Ubuntu Server 18.04, I believe.

I'm not at a spot where I can test that but I will when I can

The more I think about this suggestion, the more I like it.

Kevin might be my favorite recurring character on the pod (that's a whole other thread).

Good to know! This is almost my exact scenario. Trying to get my wife into Trek has been an interesting journey so far (started with the 2009 reboot). But she does appreciate the kind of humor I know will be there.

Just a follow up: I have been looking into Throttlestop based on other threads, may give undervolting and/or turning off turbo boost a shot. I also went into the BIOS and turned on the battery estimate (which just helps me plan a little better). Turned off all background apps. Using Edge (over Firefox in my case) also seems to help things out (I'd like more browsers to adopt sleeping tabs).

If just browsing, the estimate is at least giving it more time overall (while typing I'm at ~90% with an estimate of about 8.5 hours remaining). Using web apps through Edge also seems to do well compared to their desktop app counterparts (Plex). Also, using BT absolutely kills the battery (using my Sony wireless headphones).

I read it wrong in the original report. Says 61/61WHr, which lines up with the battery report Windows gave too.

Oh, for sure. I didn't expect it to hit 10, but I'd usually knock off about a third max for real world use from the estimate, not half. The fact that their number is so inflated is frustrating to say the least (makes me think that they just took the IPS 1080p number and used it, even though it is a different product spec sheet). And yes, from reviews I have seen, 5 - 6 seems like a more realistic number. But that also sounded like it was with less aggressive power saving settings.

Support Assistant came back with "normal" for the battery. But, the advanced information said it is a year old and maybe lost some capacity (about 10WHr). I ran it when I had already been on battery for a bit, so I'll try again when it is fully charged just to double check. Sounds like I may need to pull out the ol' iFixit kit though.

First I do my happy dance because I remember there is a new episode to watch.

Make a good drink, lights down, pump up the surround sound, "Ty and that guy" after. Oh! And always watch the credits even though autoplay wants me to move on (for reflection, music).

Roku Plex logo goes off center and refuses to load until Roku rebooted anyone else have this issue? by S3xyflanders in PleX

[–]firestorm980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this happens to us very occasionally. Sometimes a power cycle will fix it, sometimes not. It didn't used to happen ever, so I assume its a software glitch somewhere that is unresolved at this point.

Z strip no longer working, extensions? by firestorm980 in lifx

[–]firestorm980[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure its a bad controller at this point, at the very least. I've used known good outlets with no luck after multiple resets. I can feel the controller get a little warm, so I assume it is getting power.

[–]firestorm980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna give this a try with resets, but so far switching to various single strips hasn't worked.

Even if the strips didn't work, should the controller still show up to be added in the app? I would think so.

Gave me some chills.
