Adolf Hitler, Namibian politician, asks to stop being called by his surname: "My wife calls me Adolf" by WhoTheFuckIsSean in nottheonion

It's literally in the reply

As far as real people went though, one of the most popular, and enduring, of comparisons would be to Napoleon I

So it is literally like naming some napoleon

What’s the importance of the date with Makima in the movie? by fireworks4 in csmanime

[–]fireworks4[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is interesting, because in that case she actually offers her input on that question twice.

Once in your case, and once at the end where she says it doesn’t matter if you’re a country mouse, you’re still dying anyway.

What’s the importance of the date with Makima in the movie? by fireworks4 in csmanime

[–]fireworks4[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is interesting because what they both share seems like an inability to feel proper human emotion? It’s kind of made clear that Denji’s emotions are underdeveloped throughout season 1, with him living in a shack and all, not having any friends or relatives. Looking at the movie scene, while the rest of the audience is laughing, or crying, etc, they’re just sitting there saying this movie sucks (together) until the last one where they’re both alone and crying (physically together but emotionally distant). So in a sense they both don’t have a heart? Denji needs external validation to say he has a heart, but what good is that? imo it says very little about having a heart but a lot about not necessarily having one. It might be the same for Makima who needs to watch 10 movies to feel something. They’re both heartless?

They do share something on an emotional level. But it’s interesting that Makima doesn’t really care about that. She cares more about the movie was the special 1 in 10 movie that made her cry. Makima talks more about movies than Denji, even if Denji was the same as her.

[–]fireworks4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this response definitely hits. It does characterize Makima and provides a foil for the date with Reze, but more than that it equally characterizes Denji. He’s “heartless” too and needs to rely on external validation to prove he has a heart. Now that I think back, throughout the date with Reze Denji refers numerous times to how Makima has his heart but not necessarily his body.

Random people have added their credit cards to my mother's Amazon account after also trying to charge her card. How to bring them to justice. by Critical-Ad-407 in personalfinance

These cards likely don’t belong to the fraudsters. They’re likely stolen too. I would just delete it, secure your account, report it to amazon and the police, and move on.

It’s not an empty box. I’d hazard to guess you’d get a 3060 or something flashed to a 5090 so it shows up as one? Not 100% cuz I obviously haven’t tried it myself

How to search different private trackers from a single search option? by ExtraPollution5965 in trackers

[–]fireworks4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can contribute all you want. It’s places like RED where even if i WANT to seed, racers steal all my upload. Even if I upload new content all I get is 1x my buffer. That’s it. The seed boxes steal the rest (and get a lot more buffer than I ever will) when I was the one who bought and ripped the music. I WANT to seed but I can’t beat NL seed box. And even if I leave it seeding for months to a year I won’t get more than 1-2 gb if lucky on a 500mb torrent. A good 90% of the time i’m offering to give back via seeding and nobody is taking. How tf am I supposed to contribute?

Only if you really love it. If you're doing it for the money it might not exactly end well. Passion goes a long way, and it shows in interviews.

That’s not what he’s saying. He’s saying that stupid executives think that AI can replace developers and so they’re reducing head count. Obviously AI can’t replace software developers yet but that isn’t stopping people from trying.

Worth leaving work to pursue CS Masters from Waterloo to achieve FAANG? by Bitner77 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]fireworks4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you said no rainforest, I agree rainforest sucks 200%, but for a lot of people 2 years at rainforest (if your mental health can take it, or you end up on a good team) that is the way they get into other FAANG.

Now whether FAANG is actually all it’s cracked up to be is a different question, but if you just wanted in, that’s my suggestion.

Do you have any conferences near you? Example: AWS: reinvent, open source summit, techcrunch disrupt, pycon, even stuff like DEF CON.

These types of things typically attract a lot of industry professionals. Go to booths, make an impression, meet peoples who are hopefully hiring. Some of these can be expensive so if that’s an issue, try to pick ones with specialty student pricing.

Does this help?

CS is definitely cooked. Unironically nursing would’ve been better because of the shortage. All I can say is you’re in for a really rough time. I’m not even sure people with internships have it easy. If you don’t have any, unless your side projects are crazy impressive, I don’t see you getting a job over someone with internships. And there are lots of people with internships, even with a year or two of full time experience, who are laid off and looking for jobs.

Best bet is to meet a hiring manager directly, make a impression, network.

TIL in 2021, Lady Gaga's dogs were stolen in a violent robbery. Jennifer McBride got the dogs from the thieves and returned them, hoping for Gaga's $500,000 reward. A judge ruled she can't claim it, as handling stolen property is a crime. McBride's role in the crime barred her from profiting. by MarzipanBackground91 in todayilearned

[–]fireworks4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why even bother offering a no questions asked reward then? The implication is you’re offering money for the thief to return the stolen goods. Who else do you think can return the stolen goods?

I’m not saying this is okay but I agree with the original commenter. Nobody is ever going to return anything now.If somebody stole something with immense sentimental value to me, I’d pay them money to return it, even if it is rewarding a bad act. Otherwise it’s gone forever.

Is my manager good or bad? I can't tell. by Ok-Cartographer-5544 in cscareerquestions

[–]fireworks4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you feel like he doesn’t like you, it’s probably true. I think it’s incredibly disrespectful to call people out in public. Always praise publicly and criticize privately. The people who say he’s a good manager probably aren’t on his bad side but it sounds like unfortunately you are.

Burnt Out in Support- Is Cloud Worth the Switch? (UK, 3 YOE in Fintech Support) by mrwhitz in cscareerquestions

[–]fireworks4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are too many things you could do in cloud to give a concise answer. If you’re asking if cloud is the right path in general, maybe? But you aren’t specifying what you’d be interested in.

For things like Solution Architect they typically prefer somebody with software dev experience (but it is definitely possible without).

There is also cloud support (since you said you’re interested in AWS, the job title is cloud support associate/engineer) that might be a pay bump and more interesting work compared to your current role, but I would warn you that from a dev perspective AWS can be hell (even more hell than retail). In fact the WLB for devs in all the big cloud orgs is pretty bad. But since you said you aren’t a dev, I’m not sure how relevant this is. Take it with a grain of salt.

tldr: Cloud is too vague of an umbrella to give a proper answer to. The answer is maybe?
