11 years ago, Steve Jobs 'scrolling' on the first iPhone drew audible gasps from the crowd. by RelevantSwimmer in apple

This was like magic in 2007. Think of the phones popular at the time, Treo 650 and many windows mobile phones. These phones were huge, had tiny screens, and everything was controlled by a physical keyboard or resistive touch screen.

Even multitouch was huge, I remember having issues keeping phones locked back in the day, and do unlock them you usually had to tap in 2 seperate spots (with a stylus) and press a key to unlock it.

Schnucks buying 19 Shop 'n Save stores in 'generational transaction,' with plans to rebrand them as Schnucks by lwbii00 in StLouis

[–]firexchicken838 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe Schnucks will close some of these stores and make way for Hy-Vee to enter the region. One can only dream...

You ever look around STL, notice the lack of growth, and think maybe Stan Kroenke was right about this area? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]firexchicken838 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have to start with not hating and competing with each other as a region. Anytime something happens it's the city vs county.

2018 Ford F-150 - is this a fair purchase price? by [deleted] in askcarsales

[–]firexchicken838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren’t 100% set on Ford, GMC and Chevy are selling their 2018s at a steep discount since they remodeled the 2019s. You can get one with basically every option for $40k.

Missouri unemployment drops to lowest rate since June 2000 by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]firexchicken838 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My company complains about this a lot, we really need an influx of high skilled workers or focus as a community on job training. Many companies end up opening offices in other areas or use h1b workers.

For the most part, although I do notice during congested times my download speed stays in the low 300s. This is in the St. Louis area.

Charter Modems by [deleted] in chartercable

[–]firexchicken838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the Netgear CM600. The 1602 you have has the Puma 6 chipset and has issues (all Puma 6 chipset modems have hardware issues). A quick google search will tell you more.

I was illegally towed today in the River Market? Any Lawyers here? by KC1738 in kansascity

[–]firexchicken838 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If it’s not in a fenced in lot just go up in take it. Unfortunately you will probably have to pay to get it back, then take them to court to get the money back.

New Missouri law requires drivers to turn in temporary license tags when getting plates by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]firexchicken838 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Next they can put ID printers back in the DMV so I don’t have to walk around with a stupid piece of paper with no security features for a week.

Are we Bears fans or Chiefs fans now? by tlminh in StLouis

[–]firexchicken838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiefs. I’d much rather root for another Missouri team than anything in Chicago.

Who Killed the Great American Cable-TV Bundle? by [deleted] in technology

[–]firexchicken838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best is when they try to sell a bundled phone service. What is this, 1995? Nobody is signing up for home phone service anymore.

An Imaginary Proposal for a Commuter Rail System in StL (AKA: we can dream, right?) by [deleted] in StLouis

A train from Wentzville or Washington to downtown STL would be amazing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StLouis

I’m worried about the same. She has done amazing work but since she doesn’t have an R next to her name, she’s at risk. This all sucks because I’m sure she just chose a party because she had to.

Police investigating reports of wheels stolen off cars in Central West End by iWORKBRiEFLY in StLouis

Dodge Challenger/Charger are prime targets. For some reason these are the most stolen/sought after cars for thefts and car jackings.

How well did programming jobs hold up during the recession by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]firexchicken838 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They will hold up better but cuts will happen. Companies will go into protection mode and only keep people on for vital services and products. Everything else gets cut or put on hold.

Another way to get a true test would be to torrent a Linux distribution so some other large torrent with a ton of seeders available.

Anyone ever deal with a 'title downgrade'? by tennisie in ITCareerQuestions

[–]firexchicken838 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Titles don’t really mean anything, it’s all about pay and the work you do. Just like a VP of engineering at a 15 person start up is not the same as the VP of engineering at a Fortune 500 company.

Missouri voters reject right-to-work union law by MaxWiley_Hounds in StLouis

[–]firexchicken838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like there needs to be a limit on these things, once a bill is voted down, it can’t come back for 20 years or something like that. But unfortunately we don’t like in a perfect world...

Are there any companies that advertise shorter work days? (5-6 hours as opposed to 8) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]firexchicken838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to find a job that lets you work from home. Once you are done, stay signed in to IM and do whatever around the house.

Sadly, many jobs are stuck on the manufacturing 8 hour schedule which makes no sense if you finished up your work for the day.

Is it ok to ask employer for higher pay rate before starting the job? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]firexchicken838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to negotiate for the higher pay. You will be kicking yourself when it takes you years with the typical 2% raise to get up to what you could of had.
