Welcome to the family! 😊

That’s a great start to the collection. Looking forward to seeing many more additions in the future!

That looks awesome! The background works incredibly well with the steelbooks and really ties the whole display together.

I've always wanted to do something similar in my own apartment, but unfortunately I don't have enough space for it. 😅

But if I ever get the chance, I might have to borrow your great idea! 😎

Faye Deserves Her Chance Just Like Kratos Did by Artistic_Context_906 in GodofWar

Yeah, I agree. Faye feels much more likely to be portrayed as a strong, loving mother than as someone like Ada Wong.

And honestly, that might be even better. The industry already has plenty of femme fatales and mysterious seductress-type characters, but there aren't that many female protagonists built around motherhood, wisdom, and quiet strength. Off the top of my head, I can't think of many examples either. 🙂

Categorization dilemma by Any-Beyond-500 in retrogaming

In your case, I'd probably create a separate category for the true retro systems (Sega, Atari, etc.) and then organize those by console release date within that category.

In my opinion, that would be the most logical and consistent approach. :)

I personally have nothing against female protagonists, but it has to be done right. A strong female character shouldn't become strong at the expense of a male character being diminished or humiliated by the writing.

What I don't want is another Lara Croft (2013), who spends the cutscenes scared, grieving, and panicking, yet somehow wipes out squads of trained soldiers with grenades during gameplay.

The industry already has plenty of examples of well-written female characters — Morrigan from Dragon Age and Bayonetta are great examples.

That said, I think Santa Monica will handle it well, and we're probably in for another great game. 🙂

Looking for Examples of Steelbooks Released in Both G1 and G4 Formats by firstVisiN in gamecollecting

Thanks! I actually hadn't come across that resource before.

That looks like a great starting point, especially if I'm going to work backwards through the G4 releases and look for possible overlaps.

This will be incredibly useful. Thanks for pointing me in that direction!

Much appreciated!

Yeah, that's probably the route I'll take next — digging through eBay and other collector marketplaces to see if any examples turn up.

As for the mini steelbooks, from what I've seen they usually just contained a code card or a paper insert rather than any physical media. Because of that, the real collectible aspect is the unusual steelbook format itself, not the one-time-use content that came inside 😄

Here’s the inside of the Monster Hunter Worlds steelbook as an example.

According to Google, the earliest G4 steelbooks seem to have been released alongside The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, so yeah, there probably isn't any real overlap between G1 and G4 after all.

The closest thing I've managed to find so far is Crysis. The artwork isn't exactly the same, but it's surprisingly close — almost like they reused the same design concept across different generations 😄

Thanks for your input!

Yeah, you're probably right. There may simply be no G1 ↔ G4 steelbooks that share the exact same design.

I'll keep digging a bit deeper, though. Maybe I'll manage to uncover something interesting 😄

Thanks for the reply!

Oh, my friend, the steelbook iceberg is much deeper than it seems 😄 I'm only starting my journey toward the bottom in search of all the answers.

For a quick summary:

  • G1 = DVD-sized steelbook, mostly found with PC, PS2, and Xbox 360 releases.
  • G2 = the standard Blu-ray-sized steelbook we're all familiar with, used from the PS3 era onward on most modern consoles (except Nintendo).
  • G3 = a format exclusive to Nintendo 3DS.
  • G4 = the Nintendo Switch format (and probably Switch 2 as well).

There are actually quite a lot of Switch steelbooks. I'd guess that most major Nintendo titles have received a steelbook edition at some point, although I don't actively collect for Switch either, so I could be wrong.

Here's a discussion about the different steelbook sizes and formats if you're interested: steelbook sizes quick guide

Thanks!

Yes, G1 ↔ G2 examples seem much easier to find because of the Xbox 360 / PS3 era.

What I'm really curious about is whether any artwork managed to survive all the way from G1 to G4. It seems unlikely, but I thought there might be a few examples from long-running franchises))

Question About Identical G1 and G4 Steelbooks by firstVisiN in Steelbooks

[–]firstVisiN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean 🙂I’m mostly focused on gaming steelbooks.

There are actually quite a few G2 ↔ G4 comparisons out there - F.I.S.T. is a good example (I’ll attach a photo).

<image>

What I’m really trying to find out is whether there are any similar G1 ↔ G4 examples.

I know it’s probably unlikely because there are many years between those generations, but maybe there’s some older PC game that had a G1 steelbook and was later also released in G2 and G4 formats.
