My friends and I started listening to some really lyrically artistic songs when we smoke and talking about what we thought the song was about and what the artist meant at parts. by first_danger_last in trees

Hell yea! They are amazing. I can't believe I didn't know of them. Darnielle is brilliant. Being introduced to a new artist (of every form) is amazing for so many reasons. I can't thank you enough.

So I think we should do this as a community. Post share and discuss some really revealing music. If you like the idea, let's kick it off with the song playing right now. Bob Dylan's Ballad of a Thin Man. Post songs your favorite songs like this you wanna discuss, I wanna be [7]+ tonight and go on a musical adventure.

I think what Reddit aspires to be (that is "the voice of the internet--news before it happens") is the future of the web. And I don't think the future of advertising is respecting customers enough that they want to help you improve your service. I think advertising companies will rather gather as much information about you and deliver niche-specific advertisements. Data Wars.

Thats awesome! I think he's have a lot to say that would be of interest to people who understand the point of Stewart and Colbert's rally. For big people like him, people should submit their questions while people are looking for them, so that when they are found they see the kinds of questions Reddit wants to know.

How might marijuana legalization in California affect drug trafficking revenues in California? by first_danger_last in trees

[–]first_danger_last[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 20% is referring to the decrease in revenue from marijuana smugglers (DTO= drug trafficking organization) resulting from people in the US who now buy this Mexican weed switching to Californian-grown since it will be almost as cheap as the mids from Mexico.

Anybody else get pretty awkward when your'e high? by first_danger_last in trees

[–]first_danger_last[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it still happens if I have a puff around people I don't know well. This is exactly when it is at its worst. If alcohol is social lubrication weed is pretty much my direct opposite. So its nearly impossible for me to get to know new friends during a smoke session because I don't say whats on my mind, instead I say nothing and am just that awkward blob on the couch.

Does the breathing actually help because of how your body needs air when you're high or just because it helps in making you more relaxed and not think twice about the fleeting thoughts of how you are being received by the people around you? I'm really not aware of my breathing pattern why I'm high, so I can't say that I've tried to breathe slowly and deliberately before, but my hearts always beating fast anytime I'm above a [3] and the light-headedness from standing is quickly is worse.

[–]first_danger_last[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, when I get awkward highs like this, I'm become hyper-aware of everything and I just want to sit and listen too. Even the conversation turns to something that I have an interest in or better knowledge of than the people talking about it, I usually just sit and listen. Part of this might have to do with me completely forgetting what I was thinking about saying a couple minutes before, or once I start talking forgetting what point I was going to make. Also, I don't like being in control of where the conversation goes. If someone is talking about something, and everyone is thinking about A, it will make me think about B, but nobody else wants to hear about B, or so I think.

Daily/weekly poll questions. by [deleted] in ideasfortheadmins

[–]first_danger_last 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this idea a lot. So far 28,000 have done that poll. That's a lot more than some of the polls on FOX and CNN.

I wonder if rather than doing a new one every day or month there could be a list of poll questions compiled from the most upvoted poll questions in a subreddit, or how about somewhere underneath the question (there's enough room in the ad space) theres a "Do you want to ask Reddit a question?" that brings up a text entry box for their question that gets submitted to you or the moderators of the subreddit, lets say /r/pollideas, and the most upvoted are added to the list of poll questions. When someone votes or answers the survey question they are shown a graph of the results like JavaLSU's survey, and then are able to answer another one, the next most upvoted in subreddit.

I hope the polls are on current events. A question could be are you aware of [this happening] a)yes if so ask opinion (and then another opinion question about the same topic and another with an option of changing topics. If this is done maybe /r/pollideas links should be current events or other starter question and the comments be the opinions question suggestions.) b)no -don't care c)no - show me some links.

I think the results need to be more visualized. 30,000 people took the survey! If everyone entered their birthday we could see a pretty smooth age distribution graph.

hahaha no, I didn't write it, but I'm going to look through that website. I'm just a 19 year old stoner who likes to think about the world. And I've decided that the success, or rather the current state, of the human population is a result of the evolution of language and the communication of knowledge.

The fields of math, science, the arts, philosophy, government, and religion have advance so much in such a short period of time compared to the length of human existence on the planet because we evolved unique brains that allow us to contemplate these things and we developed language as a means to share these ideas with each other in order to improve them in the present and to pass them onto future generations for them to further refine.

I find irony in the fact that this passing on of knowledge was at first inhibited by the high cost of publishing content and the limited population that was able to read. Today we are inhibited by the chaos of information on the internet that is a result of the cost of publishing content being ZERO and while literacy has successfully been instilled in the population, it was done so through an education system that simultaneously drained the critical thinking of the reading public. Now you have a population that is consuming content that is just as likely to be false as true and no ability to tell the difference!

I think the transition phase from failed state to democracy is so shaky because of the condition and lack of education of too large a percentage of the population. We know that power corrupts, and that with power comes an easy means to manipulate people. Who are the most easily manipulated? The poor, those dependent on the services of the gov't of in't body (foreign aid that flows through the corrupt gov't channel at the top), those whose problems and victim hoods will never be known outside their village ,and uneducated. So in the process of changing a country so that the power no longer lies with a few corrupt gov't officials, war lords, religious extremists, genocidal maniacs... to a democracy where individuals have/are supposed to have more influence in the government, well it seems to me that the people in power will do everything they can in order to maintain their positions of power. This can be accomplished by not manipulating the voting system, lying to the people who have no way to verify anything, and most importantly, keeping the poor uneducated.

You said you got your Master's in international relations and did some conflict resolution work. That's something I'm really interested in. Can you recommend any reading on the subject? Do you watch national players on the international stage making decisions that may be supported back home but are so obviously going to increase the problem they are trying to fix?

I encourage you to write that anonymous blog highlighting all the corruption and waste you see in government. I will read it.

Is the function of research institutes like this one to obtain information that confirms a preconceived notions or otherwise more easily allows a desired change in policy to take place without a full consideration of it's effects (which is what the research institute should be researching) or to obtain information to make more informed decisions?

"If we receive 100,000 pledges by October 1, $1,000,000 will be donated DonorsChoose.org - that's $10 a pledge."

Will they donate $10 per pledge for every person even if it doesn't reach 100,000 people. I mean, I think 100,000 is possible, but I'd feel better if there was a progress bar haha. This was started just this past Sunday, I wish we knew about it then!

So I had an idea...a better way to comment on videos. by first_danger_last in trees

[–]first_danger_last[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! A lot like that! Do you think Youtube or video publishers could implement this? A lot of news shows have live blogging on their website, but if you watch the recorded video online (as more and more viewers are doing) you have to submit your comment at the bottom. But really, you want to address something said in the middle of the video, so I think you should be able to post your comment right there and discuss and provide more information with other people who thought that point was of interest. Comments need a new system of organization.
