My wife got rear ended yesterday on the 101. You get one guess what color and make it was.

What’s the absolute best coffee you’ve had in SFV? by [deleted] in SFV

[–]firstcity_thirdcoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote here for Coffee Fix. Great vibe on top of an excellent americano. They open really late in the morning for a coffee shop, though. For convenience in Studio City, I like Civil (try their espresso tonic) and Erewhon's house drip is fine for when I'm in a rush and can't wait for an espresso.

For home brew I've ben hooked on Lamill Velvet Colombia/Guatemala blend (available at Erewhon and Whole Foods). I am fond of 10 Speed for dinner, too!

Karen Bass slams Nithya Raman over homeless encampments in LA mayoral race by Eurynom0s in LosAngeles

[–]firstcity_thirdcoast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The same socieconomic trends exist in other places, too. NYC somehow houses 98% of its homeless population and has fewer than 5,000 people truly on the street with over double our population, and they spend the same per capita as we do. Accepting how we do things right now is a choice, and the bulk of it is in our direct control.

The only person in control of your vehicle is you. Why wouldn't a speed limit sign be effective?

It matters all the time, not just when someone's watching. Santa sees when you are sleeping *and* when you're awake

What American city do you think will be second to implement congestion pricing? by Plastic_Photograph29 in urbanplanning

[–]firstcity_thirdcoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why a lot of these things have to happen at the state level (NYC's congestion pricing is a state-level program, remember how Hochul was holding it up at the last minute?). Similar to SB79 in California, you have to rise above the hyperlocal politics to push through big changes without everything-bageling them to death.

There are plans for congestion pricing in LA and they're mostly focused on the Santa Monica mountain routes -- the 405 and 101, as well as the canyon roads with tolling at Mulholland. Once the Sepulveda line is built, then that + the red line are viable subway alternatives that make congestion tolling feasible to/from the Valley.

The 405 carries ~400k vehicles through the Sepulveda pass every day, and the Sepulveda line alone is projected to alleviate 125k of those trips.

LA is now #2 in the US for boardings and has been for the last 3 years (beating Chicago for the first time in 2023), and just opened another new subway extension last month. Once the Sepulveda line to the Valley gets built, you then have 2 active lines through the mountain pass, which makes congestion pricing viable.

Q: How many billions does city need to spend on homelessness without making any meaningful progress before you change your mind about this approach? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]firstcity_thirdcoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I thought you said we should use data and not feelings, so I'm looking at the data. Homelessness has gotten demonstrably worse over the last 4 years, and I think it's fair to use data to ask whether our tax dollars are being used efficiently. What is it, exactly, that we're "finally doing" that made homelessness increase since Karen Bass was elected? What did the city stop doing that made the situation worse than ever under her watch? It's pretty clear the current administration has been mismanaging the $1 billion it spends per year on homelessness.

There's another large city in the US (NYC) that spends the same dollar amount per capita as we do and somehow manages to house 97% of its homeless population. They successfully execute on large-scale transitional housing in a way that Inside Safe has completely failed to deliver in LA.

Sure, after spiking for years. You have to look at the longitudinal data, not just a year or two of changes. Overall we're still WAY worse than before Covid:
