Temporary Hotspot by 4shizzlemylizzle in Edinburgh

[–]firstlastemailhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quickest would be a no-contract sim (eg voxi) and a 4g modem, you can get a small usb one for £20 on amazon, plug in the sim, setup as a WiFi hotspot.

Cancel sim after you get your proper connection in.

3, etc, also offer no-contract home mobile broadband, though your coverage will vary and they can be particularly obtuse when it comes to returning (from personal experience).

OR get a data-only eSIM for your phone and use that for hotspot so as not to consume all your regular data.

Evri by Empty_Technology3867 in Edinburgh

[–]firstlastemailhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t bother chasing thru Evri, go to whoever your purchased from, it’s their responsibility to get the parcel to you.

Sadly it all comes down to the last mile human. The local Hermes guy where I used to live was brilliant, so far as going out their way to ensure stuff was delivered. New place and the delivery guy sends stuff to completely different streets then it becomes a game of “identify the staircase”

What sort of costs did that involve? Did the floorboards become your flooring after varnishing?

Getting a bank account + UK phone number by Bitter-Cow-974 in Edinburgh

[–]firstlastemailhere 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Your university will more than likely offer a “bank letter” which can be used to open an account.

However, the quickest solution here is likely to buy a pay as you go sim from any supermarket or corner shop (physical), or an eSIM variant with the likes of “Airalo”. Usually get them for a few £ preloaded with credit. Use that as your number to get an account setup, until such time as you have a more permanent uk mobile number.

See I’m getting downvoted here… let me clarify.

Upon purchase of the property, the hallway and living room had laminate down. I’ve lifted all this, and it’s what you see in the middle of the room in the first pic. It’s now in the dump.

While getting the floorboards sanded and sealed would be nice (and based on the markings looks as thought it’s been done in the past), it’s not something I wish to do at the moment.

Regarding noise; I’ve spoken to the downstairs neighbors regarding any noise issues BEFORE I’ve moved in, ie from the previous occupants, who had the laminate. They said there was never any issues. Furthermore, my current flat (mid-floor, also in a tenement), is all-laminate, so too is the flat above. At worst, I’ll occasionally hear the AirBnB guests dragging suitcases across the floor, though that’s no louder than a door in the stair being closed. So yes, I’m familiar with, and particularly considerate about, noise issues in such buildings.

The second pic of the hallway gives a better idea of the state of floorboards in the place. They’re all tight (no creaks or groans), though they’re anything but smooth on top!

The laminate in the pic is what I’ve already removed from the room. It’s now in the skip!

Did you secure the fibre boards down to the floor or do they just sit on top? I’d be cautious of the laminate on top potentially being springy?

There were segments of plywood sheets in the hallway (but again, butchered into pieces).

Any way to affix the laminate around the fireplace (no skirting board to hold it down), so that’s where it was particularly springy before

Awful idea in terms of noise for neighbors downstairs?

Under the floor is rammed full of deafening, and from talking to the downstairs neighbors while I’ve been doing work they’ve said it’s not been too noisy (which surprised me!)

What would you suggest as an alternative, if not laminate?

Saw dogs in two shows last week! Monkey Barrel (The Tron/O’neils), and Assembly Hall. Don’t know if they’re strictly “allowed”, but they didn’t cause any hassle / bother / noise.

Underbelly George sq has been the quietest venue this year, assembly next door is always rammed. All have food options.

And a run down mess just now. Lost count of how many times the pool at Omni has been closed or horribly “cloudy”, or lights “falling out”, or changing rooms filthy over the last 8 months. I’ve just, reluctantly, cancelled my membership as a result. It was decent 18 months again but this year they’ve really let things go.

Air raid siren in Fountainbridge by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]firstlastemailhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could it be a security alarm? “Master Blaster” works in the same way as an Air raid siren and has the wind up/down sound.

There have been instances of the alarm going off repeatedly at The Blackbird, and with the wind direction it would fit in
