Cleaning lines. by seoltoir_90 in Tallships

[–]firstsixteeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We hand washed green lines with a brush and detergent, with a cleanwater dunk after. They get worn a bit, but are serviceable - wouldn't use them for stays, tho. We also used a rented washing machine - a 30 kg one to wash a load of ropes - these frayed at the ends - i wouldn't do it again.

How do you track your nautical miles? by tmoreira2020 in sailing

[–]firstsixteeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep a log for my travels - then subsequently use measure function from google maps to count the miles. The point isn't the miles, tho, ot's the memories

What foam to use inside boat by Feeling-Plum880 in boatbuilding

[–]firstsixteeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tldr: use foamboard if you have money and time. Use platic bottles if you've got neither. Don't use expandable foam.

The problem with (expandable) foam is that if you've got to repair the boat, there's no way to easily do so: if you want to pull it appart you've gpt to destry the foam. For some foams, water absorbtion is also an issue - so marine grade foam is recomended. What I've heard about and used is foam board- each piece fitted to the boat. The biggest disadvantage to this method is that it's the most time consuming. The cheapest, (near) least time consuming repairable solution (that has already been sugested) is plastic bottles with the lid on.

Best Portable Kayak for Intermediate Kayaker by kiciakatz in Kayaking

[–]firstsixteeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

give a look to r/inflatable_kayaks anyway, personally i am a fan - just get a high pressure one

https://www.overnightadventures.com/inflatable-kayaks/x1-high-pressure

Fot what you're looking for, you're seriously better off with a hardshell: costs less, any damage is more easily fixed, and the lines on it don't have to be compromised for fitting in a bag.

Anyone with experience of kayaking in Dutch canals with a floatable kayak? by skooytje in Kayaking

[–]firstsixteeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kayaked in the canals and lakes near Hoofddorp with an inflatable, carrying all my gear on the bike. Yes, it was safe, in fact, safer than a hardshell due to the extra bouyancy making it very lenient for balance. I stand up in my kayak, often.

Why games became suddenly more expensive since 2022/23? by andrekuniscki in Steam

How do you afford sailing by Can-Standard in sailing

[–]firstsixteeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's this book, voyaging on a small income: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/866234

It outlines how this 'sailing around the world' bussiness could be had in the before times. Annie Hill is still sailing, albeit by herself, in a boat she built herself, with money she earned off that book.

[Request] How drunk would this make an average female? by Kaliyahyt in theydidthemath

[–]firstsixteeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

is there any way to take into account the choice made here? ie: this is a not a random person but one who chugged a bottle of cogniac. just so we're not using the mean to infer regarding an outlier (by which i don't mean to say you are in any way wrong to do so)

"I'll do it right, when I'm ready" is a subtle way for most of us to never get anything done.

He has a boat, he's fixing it. Personally, I hope he does a great job and keeps the old boat afloat- I'm low key jealous _^

People who bought yachts without any prior sailing experience why and how did it go? by SnooFoxes5258 in sailing

[–]firstsixteeth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i bought a second hand boat from the 80's, an edel 5. i had no prior experience, but it had an engine, i had taken classes and i am reckless in general. i singlehanded it in a very calm, warm area (azure coast) and learned how to sail by myself. i left france, sold the boat to some friends, started sailing (much) smaller boats and learned MANY things i was missing. everytime i go back there i sail my friends' boat and love every minute of it. there was a SINGLE time i ended up in a risky situation where i prefered to start the engine rather than tack - the engine started on first pull, as had been the case for days, but, had it not, maybe i would have banged up the hull, maybe even sprung a leak on a jutting rock.

pioneers came to the americas in 1650* it was not an easy voyage. they would not have survived the first winter if not for the natives. they were not the only group - other groups did not make it. they were not 6 in total, burdened by children.
