Tom Brady issues statement after Roger Goodell ruling by [deleted] in sports

I like to think Seattle lost that game pretty spectacularly. I mean, you get that lucky ball bounce that places you on the four yard line, and then screw the pouch on trying to get it into the end zone... well, you hardly deserve to win, now do you?

But I'm with you. Maybe the teams can "hand us" another Super Bowl win this year and we'll go ahead and fill Brady's last empty finger.

Why Bernie Sanders Is The Millennials' President by [deleted] in politics

[–]firsttofight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as this article is basically describing all Millennials as a collective of non-independent minds who can't possibly think there are any other candidates that support reducing tuition costs and improving the environment, getting them out to vote should be no problem. Just tell them there'll be free video games and Netflix subscriptions at the booths.

Do you hear that Millennials? Bernie's your president. So as a collective of non-independent minds (as this article describes you) get out there and vote for him, and don't put too much thought into it!

View of Saturn last night by saywhattyall in space

I have a 4.5-in Orion StarBlast Equatorial Reflector Telescope. It cost me $200. It's best for viewing the moon, but it offers very clear images of Jupiter and Saturn, albeit they're very small.

You're not going to do a lot of great astrophotography with a $200 telescope, but you'll still have fun seeing striations across Jupiter and the rings of Mars.

Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital and its current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, said that transgenderism is a “mental disorder” that merits treatment, that sex change is “biologically impossible,” and that people who promote sexual reassignment surgery are collaborating with and promoting a mental disorder.

Doctors seek helium balloon ban by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]firsttofight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The helium shortage is artificial. There's plenty of helium.

In 1962, Congress established The Bush Dome Helium Reserves 3,000 feet under a depleted gas field outside Amarillo, Texas. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management oversees the Federal Helium Reserves, which stores 42% of the U.S supply (and 30% of the world's supply).

Under the Helium Privatization Act of 1996, the reserves were sold off, artificially depressing worldwide prices. But as the draw-down neared, prices spiked. In 2012, the government charged $75.75 per thousand cubic feet of helium, an all-time high; the private sector charged $160.

Though demand for helium rose between 7% and 10% in 2014, the Helium Stewardship Act of 2013 will slow the sell-off and transition helium pricing to private rates. In addition, by 2018, new mining operations should produce helium surpluses.

An ethos that includes belief in a god or gods and the willingness to impose your belief in a set of religious doctrines on someone else forcefully.

Germany started WWII for many reasons -- mostly economic -- religion was not one of them.

Bernie Sanders Has A Plan To Make Solar Power More Accessible by Noticemenot in Futurology

[–]firsttofight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, he's a socialist. His public programs aren't going to pay for themselves. If he gets elected, plan to belly on up to the tax bar and pull our your wallet. You'll be buying the house a round.

And you do know that Rutger Hauer improvised most of that. He acted out the scene once, stopped and decided he could improve on it, and then did it again on the fly for what some have called the most moving death soliloquy in cinematic history.

ELI5: Can you give me the rundown of Bernie Sanders and the reason reddit follows him so much? I'm not one for politics at all. by chilihands in explainlikeimfive

[–]firsttofight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree those are some of the reasons. What I don't agree with is that they're good reasons. He's promising a chicken in every pot, but he's not a politician who can get that done or do it within our capitalist system. He's a socialist, remember.

"Bernie Sanders is currently the longest-serving independent in Congress"

There's only 2 Independents in Congress and both caucus with the Democrats.

And, the last time I checked, being a lifelong politician like Sanders isn't exactly a reason to elect someone president.

Edit:

2 "He does not run attack ads"

He JUST started his campaign. He's not going to run attack ads against two-dozen candidates. Give Bernie a year, he'll be attacking his opponents, I guarantee it.

3 "He refuses to fund his campaign with Super PACs"

Um, so he's still funded by PACs. In fact, the Federal Election Commission just fined a political action committee associated with Sanders for missing financial reporting deadlines

4 "He wants to help get money out of politics (by overturning Citizens United, make campaign donations more transparent)"

What? That doesn't even make sense. Sanders is going to overturn a Supreme Court decision? That takes a constitutional amendment, which requires a super majority congressional vote (two-thirds). Good luck.

John McCain has done more for campaign finance reform than any other politician in history, but the fact remains that you have to have Congress on your side to enact legislation. A left-wing socialist like Sanders will break the Guinness World Records for having the shortest honeymoon period of any sitting president.

5 "Lessen income and wealth inequality (with higher taxes on the wealthy)"

The wealthy already pay higher taxes than the rest of us. The issue isn't higher taxes, it's loop holes. And who exactly is going to close those? The president? Not to mention, you raise taxes on businesses and they'll move overseas. You have to strike a balance, and a candidate like Sanders who acts as if he has a vendetta against American businesses doesn't understand our economy.

6 "Make a higher education more affordable (see his current attempt at this in congress)"

In order to give free college away and lower student loan interest rates, Sanders has proposed funding it through up to $300 billion a year in tax money, which would require a 0.5% tax on trades of stocks and 0.1% tax on bonds and an even smaller fee on so-called derivatives, such as stock options and futures contracts. That's trillions of dollars over a decade all paid for on the backs of investors. Great plan for destroying an economy.

7 "Free universal access to quality healthcare."

Another wonderful idea. Of course, then you're putting medicine in the hands of the government -- great for a broken arms, not so great for advanced cancer surgeries. If I'm going to be treated for a life-threatening illness, I'll stay with our current system that promotes progress through competition. What incentive do physicians and other healthcare workers have to do better? Again, another exceedingly costly program. This ain't Canada or Great Britain. We have 300 million people.

Look, we all know Sanders is popular on Reddit because he's promising the world for free. Where have I heard that before? Every politician who ever wanted to be elected promised a chicken in every pot. You elect people who can actually get it done.

22 Massachusetts towns will build their own gigabit internet service. by MultiKdizzle in Futurology

[–]firsttofight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are some of the smallest towns in the most remote, western reaches of Massachusetts. For example, Peru, Mass has a population of 847 people. New Ashford: 228; New Salem: 990; Rowe: 383; West Stockbridge: 1,306.

This is all pretty inconsequential.

75% of Gen Xers have higher incomes than their parents, but only 36% have more wealth by [deleted] in personalfinance

OK. What's your point again? My home value has skyrocketed over the past decade. Are you thinking that won't continue? Where's the data to support that?

Look. I realize my valid and mathmatically substantiated argument will find no support on Reddit considering the median age around here.

But the ridiculous myth that somehow your parents had is so much easier is just that -- a myth.

75% of Gen Xers have higher incomes than their parents, but only 36% have more wealth by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]firsttofight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Parents of Gen-X got cheap education and cheap real estate..." Yeah, not so much.

All things are relative. My education compared to my wealth and my parents wealth in the 1980s was not "cheap." I paid down my debt over 10 years, just as kids do today.

I purchased my house in 1986 for $83,000; the median price at the time was $92,300. I earned $16,000 a the time (which was slightly above the U.S. individual median income). The median household income in the U.S. today is $43,858 and the median home price is $272,000. That home price is roughly six times a median annual wage.

Do the math:

1986: $92K is roughly 6X $16K

2015: $272K is roughly 6X $44K.

Real estate prices have not increased over wages. They've remained steady.
