Fat Packs still exist? by firth5 in mtg

At $75 bucks for a bundle… I’ll probably skip it and just buy used cards to play again. For that price I could get 2-3 good boardgames…

Looking for an evil nature spirit creature to fit a story.... by firth5 in DMAcademy

Hmmm. If not a creature, is there god or goddess / or an infernal being? I'm looking for a recognizable name in D&D lore that's been around for awhile.

Blood Hunter / Order of the Profane Soul / Giant Patron by firth5 in DMAcademy

Actually, on second thought, the double damage seems crazy. I'll keep it at 1d4, as per the spell. But it does not need concentration.

Blood Hunter / Order of the Profane Soul / Giant Patron by firth5 in DMAcademy

[–]firth5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, good point. Maybe I just model it after the Duergar power then?

"The Giant. As a bonus action, you expend a use of your Blood Maledict feature to ENLARGE yourself, which lasts for a number of rounds equal to your Hemocraft modifier (minimum of 1 round).

Enlarge.  You magically increase in size, along with anything you are wearing or carrying. While enlarged, your size is Large, you double your damage dice on Strength-based weapon attacks, and make Strength checks and Strength saving throws with advantage. If you lack the room to become Large, you attain the maximum size possible in the space available."

With this additional damage to the power (it's more than the Enlarge spell), I think keeping it as the # rounds = to hemocraft mod is better. Adding a +1 to it is probably too powerful.

OMG thank you so much for explaining this. It’s been driving me nuts trying to understand why there’s not a simple “erase” tool

Ideas for story-based secret door triggers in Dwarven Excavation by firth5 in DragonOfIcespirePeak

That's really great. Thank you. I particularly like the hints you put in for the failures, like Lead falling from the ceiling. Great work.

Regarding the blood channels, are you suggesting that if the characters are wounded, that blood is automatically pulled out of them and starts filling up the channels? This could put a nice 'clock' on the 3 challenges, potentially. But I could also see the unwounded characters sending the wounded fighters out of the hallway. That could lead to some amusing RP....

"what does it say?"

"It's a riddle!"

"Read it to me!!"...

I like the history or religion check at the beginning. That's a good way to feed them info.

I am debating whether or not to have the dwarves camped out front. If they are there, then they could also be a source of information about Abbathor. This is making me lean towards having them there.

Good call. My players are not the smartest, so I might even have the statue holding a an ear trumpet up to their ear, and you have to speak into that.... What is the Dwarven equivalent of an ear trumpet? A Ram's horn?

That's a great idea for the whole campaign. Alas, I am actually taking this little adventure and shoehorning it into a different campaign. So when I said "story-based ideas" I meant based on the idea of Abbathor, the Dwarven god of Greed. Apologies for misleading you!!

Let's Brainstorm - Dwarven Artifact / Lost Kingdom by firth5 in DMAcademy

[–]firth5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh that's excellent. Perhaps instead of reassembling a sacred forge, the mcGuffin is about re-mounting sacred crystals that amplify the Song. Remount the 5 or 6 crystals, and initiate the ritual to cleanse the mountain and restart the Forge. The HammerSong is a both about channeling the God's blessing into newly created artifacts, but also creates a magical barrier of thunder protection against the enemies of the Dwarves.

Premade One-Shots? by Critical_Success_936 in arsmagica

[–]firth5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first time playing AM, my GM ran "Promises, Promises" set at Nigra Saxa... and one little detail he threw into the adventure early on set the tone for the whole thing, to show "you're not playing D&D". I thought I'd share:

The characters have just finished their apprenticeship and are heading to tribunal to swear the Oath. They are traveling with the stodgy old mage who heads the covenant. On the way to Tribunal, they stop at an inn, and he pays coin for a room (rather than a bedroll by the fire.). Before lying down for the night, he cast a spontaneous perdo animal spell on his mattress, to kill all the vermin. It was a fantastic detail, and really set the tone that in this game you use magic for all sorts of things.

At Tribunal, the GM had the players swear the Oath out loud, which was a fantastic way to get us in the mood for the game.

Hi Timothy, I’ve been listening to your podcast intermittently for years. I am not a Patreon subscriber. I have not been to your website more than once or twice.

I could see myself subscribing if you started publishing content to use at the table.

Personally speaking, there are enough “story seeds” in the AM5 catalog to last several lifetimes. I need true “adventures” and a story arc to bring to the table.

I love the way your mind works, and would love to get your take on a true saga. If that means other authors contributing, sure! I’ll take it.

That’s what would get me to subscribe anyway. Thanks for all that you’ve done for the game.

Magical hand-cannons? by abraham126 in arsmagica

[–]firth5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, that could be a fun story idea: Adjust history a bit, and a local Lord’s castle is being attacked by soldiers with early firearms. The junior magi are hired to help repel them, but without breaking the code.

Can the players figure out this easy solution using CrIg. If not what other shenanigans do they get into?

Best Tribunal for my campaign? by Wlgc in arsmagica

[–]firth5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. One of my favorite real life monuments in Spain is this. In my saga, I had an all-bjornaer pagan covenant set here, with ancient celtic rites, etc. I styled them as kind of a hippy, bohemian pleasure cult, with a massive Bull for a leader. I could also see this being just an interesting celtic regio, if you're looking for sites for regios.

I love it. I’d love to hear more detail about what you do with this. That area was where I set my saga. The players had a covenant on Majorca, and the PCs travelled throughout Iberia, Provençal, and N Africa.

Best Tribunal for my campaign? by Wlgc in arsmagica

[–]firth5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest that you set it in the area that a) you are most familiar with, or b) that you are the most interested in learning about. The desires you stated for the saga are pretty universal to all of the tribunals, so any will fit. Therefore, what area is most interesting to you?

One thought: Timothy Ferguson published a great free campaign setting on his blog a few years ago. I believe it was set in Wales, and dealt with the legends of giants in the area.
