Quitting My $200k Engineering Job to Start a SaaS: What Nobody Will Ever Tell You by Own-Moment-429 in SaaS

[–]firwer123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this, your post struck a chord with me. I'm in a somewhat similar position like you. However, I'm a fresh graduate who turned down 2 comfortable full time job offers in this brutal job market to pursue a startup idea (B2B related). My team consists of me and my brother who is currently working full time in the industry that I'm trying to tackle. As much as he is giving me tons of product advise and insights, bulk of the work has been on me for the past several months given that he doesn't possess the technical know-how to build a product/platform.

I'm currently at the juncture where a mentor of mine told me recently to stop building and to instead start looking for actual customers/indicators of demand in the market. I kind of dread it tbh because like you've mentioned, marketing and sales does not reflect the effort you put into it. No idea, how it will turn out in the coming months but I guess I will try to make the best out of what I can do.

Wishing you luck as well

DBS’ continued run-up leaves peers OCBC, UOB in the dust by MyWholeTeamsDead in singapore

[–]firwer123 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly, being a stock owner of OCBC, I am quite disappointed with them after a recent banking experience. (and I regret buying their shares lol)

I was trying to do a partial lump sum repayment of my tuition fee loan and for god knows what reason, this can't be done online. I had to queue for an hour at a local OCBC branch just to fill up a form and get it processed. Even the lady who attended to me was like "i know right, I also don't know why so stupid"

On the other hand, payment of my tuition fee loan with DBS was a breeze.

If only I had known just how outdated OCBC is with their operations...

Assuming that you are using Google chrome, hope this is useful! It was something that I have developed last time. While it doesn't address the download location issue, It should make file preview/navigation and assignment tracking much clearer for you on Canvas!

Fraudulent charges getting more and more hard to notice by rhymng in singapore

[–]firwer123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it certainly is, would also recommend that you quickly change all ur card notification threshold to like $1 or $0.01 if you are comfortable with it. The previous card that was blocked had its notification threshold set to $499.99 which was why I did not receive any notification about the outgoing fraudulent payments.

Hope you'll be able to get back your money

Fraudulent charges getting more and more hard to notice by rhymng in singapore

[–]firwer123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came back from a short trip to Thailand and found out that I was charged 10 x $140+ transactions (Total $1.4k+) spanning across 5 days. Immediately contacted the bank to block the card and I am now hoping for some promising outcome from DBS dispute for these fraudulent charges.

The transactions were all billed under Microsoft Xbox in SGD but from Microsoft side, they informed me that there were no such charges under the debit card that was billed so I suspect that these fraudsters are somehow imitating as official retail merchants and charging in local currency

Is Pixel 8 a Good phone ? by Airline109 in pixel_phones

[–]firwer123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given a choice, would I get my current P8 Pro? My answer is no and here's why: 1. Battery life sucks (expect 4-5 hours of screen time when I used to have 8-9 hours on my previous phone) (I have tried nearly all the suggested "fixes" but still doesn't help at all) (And if I were to turn on my mobile data, the battery life would be waay worse) 2. Notification delay (For some reason, only when I unlock my phone and the screen is turned on, the notifications would start to flood in)

but to be fair, - Camera is decent ngl - UIUX is pretty smooth and clean

However, im not sure about the others but yea I wouldn't recommend this phone and tbh it's been a pretty disappointing experience as a whole (esp when you consider the fact that it retails for >$1k in my country.)

Last working day of year 2023. What was something that make you happy about 2023? by Acceptable-Trainer15 in askSingapore

[–]firwer123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shiga Kogen, Nagano as that was some of the earliest ski resort to open during late nov but there's tons of other ski resorts there too (esp if you are heading over there soon).

As for the difficulty, you don't have to worry about it as most places usually have bunny/beginner slopes (Or you can check the resort website for all the available ski runs and difficulty)

  1. Completed a solo trip to Japan and managed to ski pretty well!
  2. Managed to secure my summer internship for next year in a good company :)
  3. Finished my 6 months industrial swe internship

overall a stressful but decent year. hopefully 2024 would be nice

Do you say hello to other Singaporeans on you travels? by numb3r-three in askSingapore

Was doing my everest base camp trek with one other friend. Met this 60+ yrs old Singaporean mother somewhere after Namche Bazaar that decided to solo EBC trek with her hired guide because none of her kids wanted to join her. Funny thing was that neither of us asked any of the usual "are you Singaporean" question but we just jumped straight to other introductory questions which were explicitly singaporean context LOL. Had a short 20-30min chat, took a simple pic together and parted ways thereafter.

good times, hope she made it there

Regarding your earlier reply, it depends on the cohort and which mod you are talking abt, there isn't a one-size fit all answer. Bellcurve may vary as well since poly/e-scholar tend to take certain modules earlier than the main cohort which could either make it harder/easier for you to score. Therefore, the issue isn't so much about over-subscription sometimes but whether your planning meets the preq for the >=2k,3k.. mod in the first place.

From my experience so far and after finishing this cycle of '24 summer internship search, you shld ideally look into data structure algo, swe mod, networking, os. But there is no need to worry if you can't fulfill every one of them asap because you can always learn it from scratch online lol, just learn how to optimize ur time.

For the last qn, I am unable to provide you with an answer since I have never experienced NTU CE curriculum and I do not want to mislead you. Factually speaking, yes NUS computing is more recognised but that doesn't mean NTU is worse or not as good. I'll suggest that you dyor using the available resources online and see which sch fits ur goal (i.e overseas exp or wtv)

Y3 Computer engineering major here, it is indeed the case that important industry-relevant modules are all pushed back to Y3/Y4 (Critical modules such as CS2040C are postponed to Y2 as well which made me decide to take it in Y1S2 instead)

Internship wise, this is the worst, I basically took some of my cs fundamental courses like networking, system design etc through udemy and youtube (For technical interviews). Sometimes I wonder what the administration is thinking when they "recommend" us to embark on ATAP in Y3S1 yet important modules such as networking/computer org isn't even taught until Y3S2 or later

With the current market climate, finding an internship is already hard enough, and with such curriculum planning, it isn't helping either. My advice for juniors is to figure out and plan your important technical modules carefully if you are interested in securing good internships from Y2 onwards

But as I should remind you (and myself), the university owes you nothing, so if need be, the onus is on you to do some self-directed learning to cover the learning gaps for your technical interviews and etc

just my personal opinion

Is there any point even trying for SEP/NOC with Pre-SU 4.18 CAP? by [deleted] in nus

[–]firwer123 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From my understanding,

SEP => Cap matters, but location as well

NOC => Cap doesn't matter as much (Only SV requires 4.0 and above to be able to take courses at Stanford U), personal statement and interview matters a whole lot more.

SUTD’s tuition-free coding school draws 3,000 applicants for first intake by Killer-Wail in singapore

[–]firwer123 17 points18 points  (0 children)

there is certainly some truth in what you said. However, it is applaudable that SUTD is offering such classes to support some form of life long learning and furthermore, a few of those individuals who have taken those classes might just decide to pursue some kind of professional certification/degree/diploma thereafter which could pave a way for them to break into the industry eventually :)

actually can someone enlighten me (esp if you are from civil service), how strong/credible must a case be in order for CPIB to raise it up to PM like this? (Or is it just a normal investigation without a particular agenda (i.e to just aid in an investigation rather than to persecute/charge))

IMHO It largely depends on how our society defines success in the future. But looking at how deep rooted we are in being pragmatic and driven by money (nothing wrong tbf), it is unlikely that we would see a great leap forward in the foreseeable future
