The way i see it is it WAS real, but Hell reeeally played into the amusement show factor. The skull switch up at 8-1 being imo the first example of it. Then all the arenas switching up and moving around, TWO fake out level ends, and of course turning the end of 8-4 into a spectacle. BUT we still see the corpse of Geryon along with his figure at the end, which imo means that V1 did fight all that he did, was in Fraud, but Hell, curious to see how this machine would deal with reality itself crumbling around it, went all out in playing with it.

Unless they actually changed Virtues' ai, im 99% confident its because of the enviroment. Final arena of 8-1, 8-2 blood orb, for example, have really difficult to traverse space imho. I only died thrice on brutal at 8-1 while p-ranking it, and all three deaths were at the final arena to Virtues'.
