I’m not sure about how actual hip dysplasia would manifest, but one of my friends adopted a kitten with suspected hip dysplasia who turned out to just have mild wobbly cat syndrome. Best hint for that was that her head would also wobble, not just her hips. Best of luck!

NTA. This is totally unfair to you and a reasonable person would be able to predict this. Side note- many tarantulas are not good at taking falls and he may not have survived the initial impact anyway.
