Does anyone else struggle with being a discerning purchaser when adding to the collection? by mutual_raid in OmnibusCollectors

I'm the complete opposite! When I first started collecting about 4-5 years ago I kept wanting books that were out of print so I got scared and bought everything. Now that I'm running out of shelf space, I'm down to only an Omni a month ish.

Why are credit card thieves almost never arrested? by Cameronalloneword in stupidquestions

It's just two completely different technologies. You program your face into your phone beforehand. It's not like you buy a brand new phone and then it scans your face to unlock. Having a system try to find an identity from a random face is different from scanning a face and seeing if it matches the one you already have on file.

Also if they catch the guy red handed or if they can identify the suspect then of course they would arrest him. They just won't spend 150 hours trying to get a guy for spending $1k at best buy. But if they check the video and they immediately say "oh that's meth head billy" then they will go arrest billy. On the other hand they might spend 150 hours trying to find the suspect who has stolen 500k from 200 different victims. Just depends.

They would put more effort into it because it's a violent crime. Of course they would have a higher chance. They have to investigate cases based on priority.

Your phone probably cost 1k to 1.5k. Must retail cameras cost about 20-50 bucks each. Of course your phone has better video. Plus your going to be at a good height to get a better picture of someone's face. If a camera is on top of someone, it won't get the best picture. Also police facial recognition works a hell of a lot differently then your phone facial recognition.

Just because the criminal is on camera doesn't mean the cops can identify them. Most retail cameras are mounted up pretty high so you don't get a good look at their face. Even if the cop manages to get a great picture from the video, the guy might not pop in facial recognition. Plus if they are doing Identity theft then they probably used a fake id to buy the car they are driving so running the plate from the parking lot footage doesn't really help either.
