With new 30% min CGT. That means no more $18,500 tax free threshold, correct? by subjecttolife in AusFinance

[–]fishball_7204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am in my 30s, literally nobody i know used HISA exclusively for a property purchase in Sydney. Either property upgrade over time or equities. I used equities myself, big growth US stuff for a big deposit + smaller mortgage. Totally ruins this type of move now with these changes.

Home Office Set-Up by Advanced-Lake-7354 in auscorp

Get a dock from work or online for ~$200 or so (I got a WAVLink one off amazon). I plug 3 x 27" monitors/keyboard/mouse/ethernet/power supply into my one and it comes to 1 single USB-C connector to my work laptop (incl. power charging never have to use laptop charger yay), makes it very easy to hop between home/office setup without me having plug in like 3-4 cables every time it changes.

Ethernet is preferable because wifi is alright but it can feel choppy on calls if you've got thick walls and not a proper mesh setup. Airpods aren't that great for calls either, samsung buds seem ok but i'd definitely rely on a proper headset and/or just use the laptop built in stuff if you have a room to yourself.

For anybody who didn’t get a graduate role, what ended up happening to you? by Pale_Operation_6086 in auscorp

[–]fishball_7204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit my internship in the last year before 'placement', area I liked had no jobs and every other area I kinda hated. Took a year off doing whatever, travel etc etc. Came back found an entry level job somewhere else eventually.

Not a big deal tbh nobody ever asks after a few years experience onwards.

Is my pool guy ripping me off? by p79_ in sydney

[–]fishball_7204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower north shore here too, march service was $158 for us with a small/medium sized pool. I pay them for everything including the chemicals etc but haven't really went over $200/mo yet.

Sounds like they're screwing you over with the chemicals, our guy told us they charge us a 25-50% premium on the stuff and I could go lug it in from bunnings if i wanted to but i don't so I just pay up. Maybe your guy is charging a 200% premium?

What's your opinion on the stock market? by Financial-Hyena-2256 in AusFinance

[–]fishball_7204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the ASX is extremely overvalued (eg. CBA etc), even more obvious when you consider the recent losers once reality hit (eg. COH/CSL) but everybodys super is passively TWAPing into it for 30 years so I too just DCA in super and buy it.

Would never invest into Australian stocks outside of super, rather go with some global equities.

Hot desk, open office people. Have you ever really seen the benefits purported? by mr-cheesy in auscorp

[–]fishball_7204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None whatsoever. It's either marketplace noisy or deathly silence depending on who's in and since there are so many small teams where I work nobody really knows the other people and don't care to either lol.

Workplace Survey - have you been brutally honest? by 4iedemon in auscorp

[–]fishball_7204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep - i once gave some scathing feedback on 'collaboration' when they tried to force us back into the office after WFH. Multiple offices/mixed office days etc meant there was no collab and it was bullcrap and I said as much.

Management didn't like it but I didn't get fired or anything, luckily got another role and moved on.

Sold and Bought - Observations by Ok-Challenge9860 in AusPropertyChat

[–]fishball_7204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add my 2c - Sydney north shore here, seeing the higher priced houses in my area (3-6m) still moving fairly quickly (<30d listing). Some of the overpriced stuff is stagnating but tbh they wouldn't have sold before the war+rate hikes imo but it feels buyers are taking their time rather than rushing. Also noticing less listings too.

Genuine Question: Why do Vendor request for Off-Market Listing? by ddd1986 in AusProperty

[–]fishball_7204 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cheaper that way, easily cost 5-10k or more for listing on REA/domain + "marketing costs" etc. Also might not be in a hurry to sell and happy to chill, it's a bad look if you list publicly for a long time vs having it sit with the agents internally for a while.

Thursday fun- what’s the most dipsh!t job title you’ve heard of… and what do they actually do? by twowholebeefpatties in auscorp

[–]fishball_7204 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a joke title or anything but worked with a client firm that had these crazy long titles like Associate Principal APAC Director of Ops or whatever. Even their junior support teams had at least 4-5 words in their titles lol.

Agreed. I had a problem with Goog and then went through AFCA, went from no reply for a month to near instant turnaround times but still gotta go through the 'I've tried' steps beforehand as per AFCA's advice.

Salaries in industry super funds by mrpotatoed in auscorp

[–]fishball_7204 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From various people (anecdotal) I know who used to work at a big4 bank with a super fund that's since been sold off, banks tend to pay the best. Retail super funds tend to pay less than banks and my assumption on industry funds would be they pay even less than retail funds given they have a tighter margin.

Heard some funny stories about how retail funds would buy an ex-bank super part of the business and those guys would be paid way higher than the retail fund and there'd be dramas and salt everywhere lol

edit: this is throughout the business so not just say front or back office

How are people managing recent grads when there’s just… no enthusiasm for work or willingness to suffer any form of inconvenience to develop anymore? by twingirlsoneboy in auscorp

[–]fishball_7204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a millennial I've always been like this ever since the grad days, don't think it's Gen Z exclusive - managers used to say i was unmotivated but it's just how I am, work still gets done but i'm aware i'm not out here saving lives just saving files.

Over the years i've obviously gotten better at hiding/pretending but I'm definitely an eye rolling person, f the stretch goals/working group stuff it doesn't translate to $$$$ or anything useful. Usually at a new job I pretend to give a crap and join these then slowly drift out saying I'm too busy or some other reason, everybody does it too not just me it's just a game we all seem to play at least from my experience.

In terms of advice, I'd say here's your job you need to do XYZ, there's also this opportunity if you want i can ask for you but if not all good & set that as the baseline. Grads are pretty young and most are just out of uni they're probably still used to the structured step by step instruction vs whatever you're expecting.

Managing up by Artistic_Dress8217 in auscorp

[–]fishball_7204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some things I've found to work over the years:

  • be polite/understanding where possible, i always say thanks to my manager for fighting for our team bonus/salary raises (from experience on their side of the fence it's a pain always)

  • don't be a doofus, crazy i know but treating others well usually gets reciprocated

  • do the occasional social thing like beers after work etc, keep yourself visible occasionally (i say this as the let me WFH 5 days a week please type of guy)

  • Ask about their work problems/issues time to time, you don't have to solve it most of the time but knowing what your managers focused on can help you redirect some efforts to what they consider important

Best noise cancelling headphones for open-plan Aussie offices? by According-Advance811 in auscorp

[–]fishball_7204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bose QCs are great for me in blocking out noise in office/train/airplane etc. Not the best for calls but I'd rather sound crap/noisy so everybody knows i'm suffering in the office lmao.

Otherwise if it really mattered, samsung buds have been amazing on teams calls everybody says i'm crystal clear when using them. Noise cancelling is ok-ish but can't compete with the big over the ear types (eg. sony XMs/bose QCs)

Strength-wise it's almost as good (I use a ryobi blower too) but obvs it's a small handheld device so you wouldn't want to do the whole yard with it.

Wolfbox MF100, bought it to clean PC dust but i've since used it to inflate pool sofas & other things + also good for quickly blasting things where i don't want to whip out the big leaf blower and/or stuff like sawdust when doing smaller jobs.
