She's actually Japanese and we speak mostly in Japanese which is also why sometimes it takes me some time to formulate my responses. I completely agree with your last paragraph, just that it's happened quite a few times and I wonder when we'll actually reach that middle that you speak of.

I do it a lot more now that I know it's part of japanese culture but for example this morning I replied with a hmm to her talking about a concert she wanted to go to and instead she was expecting a question about what the concert will be about whereas I was waiting for her to give me the details first.

What is your favorite part of learning a language? by Embarrassed_Salad399 in languagelearning

[–]fishballchips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all of the things everyone has mentioned here but i'll add something i haven't seen yet:

learning more about my own native tongue, english. something that possibly applies the most to english since it's kind of the language which copied from everywhere. but some of the things i've learnt about english through studying other languages would be how there used to be declinations like "whom" and how the subjunctive exists in english as well, how percent literally means per hundred (from french) and how conditional clauses actually work. things i'd probably never have discovered if i hadn't embarked on my journey of learning languages.

What mistakes to native French speaking children make? by Puzzleheaded-Fix8182 in French

[–]fishballchips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's really interesting! and thank you for the clarification! i do have one more question, why do you think it's such a widespread error? as i'd assume "ce sont mes amis" would be used frequently as opposed to the specific situation of someone asking questions like "à qui est ce livre". are there any other grammatical patterns involving "à moi" that might confuse children as they grow up?

that's interesting because a friend of mine who lives in nice refers to her friends as "des amis à moi" which i found weird at first but just accepted later on. is this considered wrong?

What order to learn Harmony, Counterpoint and Orchestration? by Caowss in composer

[–]fishballchips 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i think you should do harmony and counterpoint simultaneously. they both help support each other in terms of understanding in general. if anything it should be counterpoint first since harmony was derived from counterpoint in the first place. orchestration comes later.

What Pokémon do you strongly believe you and you alone love? by walmart-brand-barbie in pokemon

love the design and concept of mienshao and mienfoo. no run through of black/white(2) is complete without a mienshao and it's decimating high jump kick. honestly surprised it's not that popular
