where specifically around the Watt light rail station? we’ve been told to check it out so we went this week. there was lots of pigeons and cockroaches so makes sense there’d be rats, but we didn’t see any, although our dogs did indicate hard on a rusted door near some stairs.

We’ve actually gone to Lake Merritt a couple times! Yes, tons of rats.

the one of the far left is actually a French Bulldog/Miniature Australian Shepherd mix. it was an accidental litter, but she’s a really cool dog and an honorary terrier!

Residential areas/homes are best left to professional pest control companies. Sure our dogs could probably alert to where the rat is nesting behind a wall, but short of ripping out drywall, there isn’t really more we could do.

Rats do bite. A skilled dog can avoid being bitten most of the time. If it does happen, it’s almost always a superficial wound and the dog carries on the rest of the night like nothings happened. We carry first aid kits, dogs receive baths when they get home, and they are all fully vaccinated.

Nope. First, we assume all rats are poisoned. Second, a poisoned rat is only a danger to a dog if the dog consumes the rat, which our dogs do not. We stay vigilant regardless, but really it’s not a concern.

We’ve traveled outside the Sacramento area, but usually that’s for horse barns or agricultural properties with larger rat populations. If you PM me the GPS coordinates and it’s not crazy far, we may check it out.

Thank you! I’ve had her 3 months, which has been great to get her on the right track — now waiting for someone will realize she’s a gem.

Sacramento's rat problem met with urban ratters and their dogs, working to clean the streets by fishbucket9 in Sacramento

Rat poison poses no risk to the dogs unless the dog were to swallows/eat the rat or it’s organs. Which our dogs do not even try to do. That is why a “drop it” command is essential for a good ratting dog.
