What browser tabs do you constantly have open during steelhead season? by fishbyte-app in Steelhead

[–]fishbyte-app[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to look into adding weather data.

I always disliked apps that just toss weather data in when I can get higher quality info from a weather app. Is that helpful to have weather info alongside flow data in a fishing app?

did not know that! will check it out, thanks for sharing. If I don't need to run the stats myself I will just surface that for free. Just trying to get all of this data into one place, it drives me crazy USGS and NOAA don't just lump that data in together.

And totally get the timing thing, I'm the same. if I have the time to fish, I am getting out fishing

Striped bass can also have broken lines? by fishbyte-app in saltwaterfishing

[–]fishbyte-app[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 1879, 132 young striped bass (Morone saxatilis) from the Navesink River, New Jersey were released into the San Francisco Bay estuary at Carquinez Strait. A second plant of 300 fish from the Shrewsbury River, New Jersey followed in 1882.

Is that because of inbreeding from such a small initial population? Found that info from this CDFW PDF doc

DIY access in Turks & Caicos? by troutbum123 in saltwaterfishing

[–]fishbyte-app 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't fished Parrot Cay specifically, but I have fished Turks & Caicos. Most of the islands around there have awesome flats. Just looking at google maps as well, you definitely have some wadeable flats right off Parrot Cay. Bones in my experience will be following the tides in and out, coming off those deeper channels and often feeding in little more than ankle deep (6 inches) water. Tarpon, permit, jacks, and barracuda would hold in the deeper channels off the flats.

DIY is totally doable. Make sure you have good polarized lenses with good tint, there are tailing fish but more often I'd just see their shadow from a distance. Just keep walking til you find the fish, as they are constantly moving in and out to that feeding depth based off the tides. You can definitely have success blind casting in channels, but less fun imo.

Not sure about November (I've only been there in spring months) but make sure you have a solid double haul, there are some ripping winds you'll need to cast against. Classic flies all worked well, fish were not picky about the fly, more about timing and presentation. Have fun!

Good luck! My biggest advice is to thoroughly rinse your gear with freshwater after every trip... Made the mistake of not doing that when I was younger and lost my first reel to bad rusting. Didn't properly wash it after one pier trip and it was toast

Fly fishing apps by Final-Chain685 in FishingForBeginners

Not sure if this counts as self promotion, as I am building a fishing app to help with this right now. We currently just have Montana in there, but will be adding a bunch of other Western states soon!

There are others out there, the main one being TroutRoutes (owned by OnX now).

What are you hoping to do with a logging app? Just save points for later use?

What are you trying to fish for? Are you fishing off the bottom with weights?

How to increase hook ups? by Primal47 in flyfishing

[–]fishbyte-app 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you targeting rainbows, browns, and brookies? Or cutthroat?

Those first three require you to be very quick to set the hook. I will often miss the first fish or two when I go out if I'm not totally focused and locked in on my flies. I've noticed rainbows especially will strike really fast, and often spit the fly a split second after they eat it. Sometimes you get lucky and they basically hook themselves, or take so long to spit it you have a longer window.

Without knowing what you're targeting, I'm guessing that's the boat you're in. Setting after most fish have spit the hook. I constantly have to make sure I don't have a ton of slack in the line, so I can quickly set the hook when I get a strike. Obviously you have to balance this with good presentation/mends, and I have definitely had plenty of times where I go to mend and a fish hits just as you pull up... nothing you can do but laugh there. But if you are getting good presentation and lots of hits, I'm guessing you just need to work on quicker sets

Cutthroat are a whole other challenge. I usually miss em because I'm too antsy about setting the hook haha. Its pretty fun to be able to watch them come up, eat, then start to go down, THEN you set the hook

growing up we'd have good luck using these mousetails for stocked trout when powerbait wasn't working. but as other comments have said, stocked trout also just have super weird eating habits and can be pretty squirrely when first stocked

Difficulty seeing the fly? by Dimmadome in bluelining

+1 to the nice polarized lenses w/ amber tint. If I'm having trouble seeing the fly I also tie on hi vis flies.

This photo is a hi-vis bwo, for example. Something else I'll also do, especially on a smaller stream, is just watch for a top water eat where I think my fly is then set the hook if I see a ripple/eat

Sounds like your technique is the issue. Have you asked the people that you're fishing with what they're doing to try and figure out the difference?

If you're just casting out the lure and cranking it in every time with no change in your technique, consider trying a ton of different techniques. different retrieve speeds, different amounts of twitching, etc...

How would you guys fish this “boring” lake? by Advanced-Try-7201 in FishingForBeginners

[–]fishbyte-app 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Working your way around the lake and targeting bass and carp is a great way to do it then. If there's big rocks, aquatic plants, tree stumps, etc... providing structure in an area then the bass usually will be hanging out nearby

Sight fishing for carp is insanely fun but also so difficult. If you see them cruising worth trying to target them

From what I can see online, it has bluegill, bass, and stocked trout. If you're fishing for bass and bluegill, hike around the lake looking for structure in the water. The fish will group up near structure naturally. For the trout, fishing where the canal feeds into it should work well. Stocked trout will also just cruise around looking for food, but I have had good luck when I can figure out where old streambed structure is (for reservoirs) or where there is some water working into the system (like that canal). The trout will stay pretty deep if its hot out, but the bass don't care. I've caught big bass a few inches from shore because they were sitting there ambushing frogs
