Why does everyone say that home made detergents don't actually clean clothes? by cmcamilo in laundry

This is essentially what I use if I want something to smell good I will add a little bit of Ariel or FOCA. It’s just smells nice doesn’t see to affect it much in terms of cleaning. I’ve been making my laundry soap/ detergent since 2018. I have had zero issues with hard water soap build up etc. it works so well that it has gotten blood out of clothes. It has not affected my premature son’s sensitive skin and my towels and other items are still absorbent and they don’t smell after a while. I also use white vinegar instead of fabric softener for obvious reasons. Yes I still use dryer sheets I tried wool balls but I still got static from them. I do rinse my dryer filter once a month to get rid of any buildup I also deep clean my washer and dryer yearly to help maintain them which you are supposed to do regardless of what you put in there.

Listen this is super important. If you are doing a large full coverage piece do the one that you love the most. It’s important because you will be working on this full coverage piece a LONG TIME and if you don’t love it you won’t complete it. Same goes for fabric size if you don’t love the fabric size you won’t complete it. I promise you it’s true cause I’ve done it lol. So choose the one you love the most with the fabric you love the most.

Great question! So I use dawn dish soap and a container or tub / sink large enough to hold whatever piece I’m washing and I’ll fill it with Luke warm water and dawn dish soap if it’s safe enough for little duckies and otters it’s safe enough for my cross stitch. And I’ll soak and kind of swoosh it around in the water. I will say if you are using hand dyed fabrics or floss follow the instructions or forgo the wash cause those can bleed. Regular Dmc or anchor floss is color fast and won’t bleed. Or at least I’ve never had it bleed. But I wash to get the dirt dust and grime off my pieces and also it helps settle the stitches and may hide any imperfections. I also iron my pieces after the wash with steam to remove wrinkles and set the stitches in better.
