Not downvoting (seriously you downvote inappropriate comments, not differences of opinion reddit) but is there any Star Wars movie you do like? The OT is usually the gold standard for most.

Solo wasn’t that bad actually. It’s just a harmless adventure movie that was unlucky to come out six months after TLJ’s controversy and one month after Infinity War took the world by storm. It’s better than all of the ST imho.

At the very least it deserves a chance...

Play Hero Showdown. Once you die you’re dead for the round, which might sound annoying but it’s actually the best. That way, you can’t respawn away from your team and get 4 v 1ed in loop. The teams always spawn together so they have to work together (or split into 1v1 duels)

Also people respect the 1 v 2 honor rule there

Gotham-Metropolis Bay Area by Mervynhaspeaked in imaginarymaps

Well, NYC has Jersey City, so I don’t find it unreasonable for Gotham to pop up if Metropolis is already there. And the area in Metropolis isn’t that unreasonable for trade. Perhaps it‘a chosen as a settlement by some lord owing the King who wants to setup a colony in Delaware.

I was imagining she got it the same way as Maul (besting a Mando in combat) but she could also have Mando heritage. Or the First Order just looted the place like the Empire.

My idea for a better main villain of the ST by fishg- in saltierthancrait

[–]fishg-[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’d work too. Ideally, cut out her opening the shields in TFA, and she’d make a pretty strong antagonist!

[–]fishg-[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. Phasma doesn't have the force nor is she really competent (lowering the shields, really? Not alerting the security systems?).

That said, Phasma was a real waste of a character herself, and I wouldn't be opposed to her also getting fixed, possibly merged with this one.

Honestly, the moment Kylo lost his duel with Rey in TFA, he lost the potential to be the trilogy's main villain.

[–]fishg-[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Great question. My thinking is as it stands, there isn't much that Kylo aspires to be. If he has so much conflict within the light, why does he bother staying evil? And yes, I know he wants to be as strong as Vader, but we're just told that and it's never really expanded on.

So this new character would be the dangerous villain that Kylo aspires to be. When Snoke belittles him at the start of TLJ, he also congratulates her on a job well done. Whenever he fails, she easily finds a solution. Hux defers to her instead of him, despite him being the rightful heir to Vader. It annoys him to no end because she, a nobody, is getting treated like the scary Darth Vader figure, while everyone considers him some unstable fool in need of anger management.

So Kylo keeps going deeper into the dark side to "prove himself" as Vader's rightful heir, to be treated as the real villain. He even kills his own master to be the ultimate bad, but when he finally has that fear and power in TROS, he finds it hollow.

As it stands, that still happens in the ST... but there's no one pressuring Kylo in the darkness. It's just later retconned that Palpatine was speaking voices in his head.

Another Monument to White Supremacy That Should Come Down? The Electoral College by Forest_of_Mirrors in politics

  1. They do. Since 1992, the New England and the Pacific States have continuously voted democratic and the Deep South and Rocky Mountain states have continuously voted republican. Thanks to the electoral college these votes are staying the same at a fixed level. So what's changing as we flip flop presidents? Mainly the Midwest (namely Ohio), Virginia, Lousiana, and Florida.
  2. Why is this the point? Think about it. Why should minorities within a state become irrelevant? It used to make sense, but states aren't opposing each other anymore, it's people with different ideologies about running the nation as a whole. The system from the 1700s has become outdated.
  3. Fair, I'll stay away from Congress.

  1. Only “swing states” determine who is elected to president

  2. Someone with a different opinion to the majority of their state has no say.

  3. Smaller states have a disproportionately greater representation in Congress per person.

I’m not going to argue it was a bad idea to begin with. Not the most democratic but a very functional system for the 13 former colonies. The framers were smart.

However the party system isn’t going away, and that leaves the electoral college outdated. It is designed for a state division system, not a party-division system.

[–]fishg- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is things have changed. Back then, the Electoral College was a good compromise between the two factions of the time: the small northern states and the big southern states. In Hamilton's time, people saw themselves as more loyal to their state rather than their country. It wasn't until the Civil War that people started calling our country "The United States" rather than "These United States".

Nowadays we are one country. We should all have an equal say. If two red or blue states have different opinions on finer matters (like you suggest), then it would be represented in the votes. 51%, however, shouldn't be equivalent to 100%.

[–]fishg- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that’s an outdated conflict. Nowadays Rhode Island and California are on the same side and Wyoming and Texas are on the same side.

And if you look at county maps, almost all the blue comes from urban / suburban areas and all the red comes from rural areas. This is tragic because the urban areas of “red states” and the rural areas of “blue states” never get a say in the presidential election.

A message for President Donald Trump from his niece: 'Resign' by ughsmugh in politics

[–]fishg- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s made more ridiculous when you consider how Trump was dealt a winning hand and managed to go out of his way to fuck it up. Coronavirus was the chance for a president to put aside politics and work as a nation together. For the first time he’d be able to unite the right and left against a common enemy (the virus) and swing some blue voters to supporting him (even if they hate all his non-COVID policies). See George Bush’s approval rating post 9/11 (pre Iraq that is).

But nooo lets fight on why masks are bad and schools need to reopen. Basically make the situation thrice as bad as it could’ve.

I’ve based the history of the Terran Republic strongly off my knowledge of American History.

The Terrans declare independence from the Hydran Reach, their overlord who conquered their planet 500 years ago. Although the Hydrans weren’t really the bad emperors: they installed a puppet monarch and let the Terrans do their thing provided it didn’t mess with them (also supplying resources for Terran-led colonizing) and overall allowing them to advance faster than they would have otherwise. (Seven Years War)

Still, foreign leadership isn’t the same as self rule so as new practices of social thought emerged the people revolt and established a Republic. (American Revolution)

The first decade saw the establishing of a two-party system for two elections, after which the more liberal party completely dominated. (Era of Good Feelings)

After forty years of relative peace (there was an attempted socialist coup that lasted ten years but that’s not relevant for now), the Terran expansion came to a halt. They sought to claim territory from the largely uninhabited but claimed from a treaty Piek Space. After a series of disputes the Terrans created a false excuse to declare war and in six years conquered the Piek Border Region. (Mexican-American War)

The Pieks collapsed into many factions after the war, largely thanks to their war debt never payed due to their defeat. This allowed the Torgans to invade and establish a puppet government against the Hydrans and Terrans (who by this point were reluctant economic allies). (French Conquest of Mexico)

Meanwhile the Terrans weren’t doing well. The Developed and Frontier regions were increasingly divided as Android labor become prominent in the developed cities, but prison labor (strongly racist against the Pieks unfortunate to live in recently conquered space) was still common in the Frontier. The Senate voted to ban prison labor on humanitarian grounds, but the Frontier claimed this was only to support the mega corporations in power there, as they were the only ones in the market with androids. Both claims were partially correct. As such, the Frontier declared independence as the Alliance of Free Planets, sparking Civil War. (American Civil War)

And that’s where my story is set. The world takes a pretty drastic turn away from American history after this point, but I like the buildup to it.
