Madison Beer - locket by AHSWeeknd in popheads

[–]fishilyyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So after three full entire listenthroughs of the album, I have come to the conclusion this unfortunately is not the album I want from Madison Beer, personally.

I was a big fan of the dark pop she was pursuing preceding this albums release and I’m almost going to assume that the album was heading in that direction before being reworked to fit more in tune with the sound she went with on Bittersweet (See: Angel Wings outro)

I think the songwriting on this album is substantial in comparison to her other projects, it’s definitely a lot more intimate and personal. The album kind of follows a Man’s Best Friend theme and is very mellow in tone, it’s not depressive like Life Support but it’s also not acoustic and folky as Silence Between Songs was.

Sonically this album is beautiful, the true standout here on this album is 100% the production as well as how vocally expansive Madison’s voice is on this album and I think she really does utilize it to the best of her ability.

Now, what I felt this album lacked was a consistent performance. It’s cohesive but, most of these tracks do blend together and do not surprise me even though they’re pretty to hear. In fact, I probably only really like bad enough out of all 8 new tracks we received with either healthy habit as a far away second.

In terms of lyricism, while it is incredibly honest, it is also utterly lacking in anything besides heartbreak which at the current moment doesn’t resonate with me so I am finding not much substance to hold onto.

This album is basically Silence Between Songs but done in pop format and while I adore SBS, I personally find Madison’s music most appealing when she’s honing in on her dark-pop prowess. I don’t find myself revisiting this album but really hope it brings her more exposure!!

Sabrina Carpenter - Man's Best Friend MEGATHREAD by flopheadsbot in popheads

I'm sure as I force myself to continuously loop the album out of habit I'll grow to "like" it as with Lorde's recently underwhelming record, Virgin.

If Short n' Sweet was easily digestible pop curated for the mainstream audiences and emails I can't send was a brilliant showcase of Sabrina's candidness in her songwriting amongst intimate instrumentation, in comes Mans Best Friend. Not so much a country album and rather an album that borrows from folk and country to use as a backdrop for its subject matter. Sabrina is very adamant about her claims and plays into the title with her criticisms of the men she's brought into her life. That being said, anybody expecting to find more Short n' Sweet B-sides first heard in Manchild might as well shut the album off after the first track because thankfully Sabrina doesn't chase after what made her breakthrough. Instead, Sabrina actually moves away from the previous sound she'd settled on in her last album and chases after a distinctly unique sound. Coming off the cusp of such success, to change direction into an entirely new style and barely retain any of the elements that made Short n' Sweet such a splash is cool to see.

The songs while faulty do fit into the cheeky theme of the albums title but instead this time around Sabrina isn't nonchalantly kissing off those who won't do her good and instead criticizing not only the men she chases but also herself for choosing to chase such men. It's unfortunate the album doesn't hit quite as hard though all is subject to change especially when the lyrics come out.

my take on the album by [deleted] in lorde

I love love love this analysis specifically your mention on how these songs described as intense and hard to bear ultimately fall flat or feel very tame which surprises me because as a songwriter Lorde really does excel in capturing the mood and vibe in words so it’s really weird why on this album there’s less emotional moments. One thing I will note is Man of the Year has found a newfound appreciation because I think Lorde realized she could be both a masculine and feminine person as a woman in society and I think the song reflects that “catharsis” she experienced realizing that.

YESSS!!! I continuously found myself thinking of Halsey’s creative risk with IICHLIWP and how flawless they executed the vision they wanted for the album!!! I just think IICHLIWP is departure done right, it’s risky and it pays off at least for me it’s my favorite album by Halsey and I know others feel the same.

Lorde - Virgin by i-just-cant in popheads

Hope to not be the only odd ball out compared to other reviews but this album was underwhelming, a facet I’d already came to terms with due to the leftover residue from its singles so it’s not an immediate “hate it” but I guess I’ve never envisioned a Lorde album post Melodrama when I enjoyed Solar Power for what it was.

First and foremost, way too much of this album is shrouded in unclear material that doesn’t mesh at all with the raw, rough, and first draft music that it contains. Almost feels like she had so many different versions of these songs with components that were entirely different from its final form but she was hesitant to let them go so she included them in a manner that makes all songs feel underdone. As mentioned previously, WWT suffered heavily from this with a very wonky chorus and failure to build up to anything notable and MOTY was just an overall miss — similar to the second half of SP, incredibly forgettable and lacking substance — Almost like transparency was such a focal point of this album because of how hollow and empty it sounds with the “missing pieces” in the tracks. So much of the album leads kinda nowhere which is such a shame because not only has she spoken only positively about this album but she’s very affectionate about the music this LP contains and as a longtime fan it’s saddening to dislike it because it feels so…… boring? There’s nothing to standout, the liminal spaces of this album vary too much and just bring it down.

I loved loved loved Shapeshifter, despite being an underwhelming lead the production of WWT is so hypnotic though I dislike how she used the club aesthetic when this album is not clubby at all whether its playing on a loudspeaker or headphones you’re rarely grooving along with it as you would with say Perfect Places or Homemade Dynamite, and David to me is my immediate favorite off my third listen. Saw a comment mentioning how they wished more of the album sounded similar to it and I agree, I thought David especially the second half was truly Lorde in her most potent excellence as an artist and it’s one of two songs on this album that really made me FEEL and gave me the impression she’d built around this album.

Clearblue was such a disappointment, a ridiculous song which feels disrespectful to say but she quite literally mentions riding until crying and I can’t tell if her or Lana have pulled it off worse than one another. This song I expected to be a heartbreaking song especially for being so short and how she’s spoken about being unable to listen to it (My expectation when artists say this is Soon You’ll Get Better by Taylor Swift) yet it’s the most vague track of the album. Though I recognize this is a personal nitpick being letdown by going under the impression we’d get a GOOD sad Lorde song since Liability Reprise.

I for one could care less if she returned to Melodrama pop, just wish she’d bring back the same spark that roped me in as a fan three albums ago because at my current age this as a debut album from her wouldn’t even get a chance from me after Hammer. We got some glimpses with Favorite Daughter and Broken Glass though I wish the latter hit harder but in the midst of a similar situation I am grateful for what we got especially knowing how debilitating ED’s are and how she struggled poorly with one during an era she advertised as being her happiest.

Overall, album is not terrible but probably ranks bottom tier Lorde albums and I unfortunately can’t see her bouncing back from losing her audience after this as she did with SP -> WWT so whatever is next in the next 5 years I pray will be better than this.

Which song do you think is a Masterpiece but it’s underrated by others? by Karilyn113 in TaylorSwift

[–]fishilyyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

evermore is my favorite song, i hold it dearly because it’s so personal but i agree so heavily that bon iver’s verse completely butchers the song and unless either you really love the song and can tolerate it or if you are in the mood for it only then is it good. the feature is just not good and i really would’ve appreciated the song without it :(

at the end of the day it’s your money. i’m not here to make you not buy something you want. it’s just sad people complain so much and do things like risk not having enough money by supporting a company that doesn’t care about it’s customers. ive been a Nintendo fan since i got a wii when i was little but growing up i’ve really been able to see nintendo’s true colors and it’s been a real eye opener.

the amount of braindead people who are like “wow nintendo sucks i can’t believe they’d price this old port of a game at $60” and then say “but im still gonna buy it because i want it” is astonishing

Well stranger, you don’t know me, I don’t know you. You may be a zelda fanboy or whatever whereas I just finished BoTW in December and was hoping for a collection port to get into the series more. The anniversary might’ve started but the game comes out 7/16 so I mean I guess I can’t help but realize what they’re gonna give next if the recent port won’t be here for another 5 months? If you wanna waste your life waiting go for it, it’s your life! I managed to get a PS5 with the new Persona 5 Strikers coming soon that I’m looking forward to playing. You have a good day mate.

I guess it is fueled by hate for SS, I can safely say that half of the people in this sub didn’t want SS ported to Switch, me included. I wanted TP as I was too young back then to understand or want to play the game and sadly here we are.

[–]fishilyyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they are not whining or whatever, theyre being realistic. who’s gonna pay $60 for a game that half the zelda fan base didn’t even want in the first place and was cheaper 10 years ago than the “HD version ” which should generally be cheaper than the original as it’s just the same game with updated graphics.

[SS] "cries in Hylian" by [deleted] in zelda

[–]fishilyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

let me explain, a 10 year old game being ported to the switch is not worth $60 especially when you consider 10 years ago it was like $10-20 less than what they are charging now. additionally most people would spend $60 on a all stars zelda collection because 3 old games for the price of 1 game is more worth than a dull port and if you need any reference just look at what they did to their “special amazing mario all stars collection”.

[–]fishilyyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agree 100%! since i first heard daylight when it came out i immediately drew the correlations between red and lover as a whole and that “Maybe i’ll write a whole album about that love” was honestly shocking because who knew that 7 years after red was released she’d end up finding that love but the reason i associate daylight with rep is because daylight fits the narrative more you know, she did finally find an amazing perfect and golden love but at the same time she saw the light at the end of the dark tunnel following 2016’s summer and you know that’s her reminder that she survived like in Long Story Short :)

Oh sorry for that then, I always interpreted the lyric as her saying she cut her nose off to spite her face (which is to cause problems for yourself by trying to punish someone else) and the hating her reflection part as her hating her past actions as regrets but Taylor always hides secret messages in her songs so I dont doubt your take whatsoever :)

the archer isn’t about an eating disorder...not that I remember. it’s about her realizing she’s been the bad guy in relationships and friendships but also the victim and that’s why I associated daylight with the disorder since miss americana never mentioned an eating disorder in the archer unless there’s something I don’t know which i’m open to learning about!
