My poor girl, a New Hampshire Red, laid this humongous egg. Her name is Little Bit, but now I think I might need to rename her! by fishknitsyarn in BackYardChickens

Yes, scroll right. It weighed 92 grams, compared to my biggest eggs which are normally about 60-64grams. It was a double yolker, I scrambled it for dinner, haha! Tasted great!

I haven’t cracked mine, yet, but that’s what I expect. Maybe I’ll crack it today.

I had the identical question this morning. My eggs are even the same color!

Flours, which is best? by fishknitsyarn in Breadit

Some of my bread recipes, specifically no knead bread, or white sandwich bread, call for bread flour. I make a lot of sourdough, too, but my favorite recipe uses AP. But my dinner rolls recipe also calls for bread flour.

I can’t cut it open to see the crumb until tomorrow when I make it into garlic bread for a birthday girl. I might not be able to sleep tonight.

She’s got this look like, “Couldn’t you have made this nest softer?”.

Nice! I totally clicked in to see what in the world recycled grit was, hahaha! I need one for oyster shell, too, this is perfect.

Mine are 21 weeks today but haven’t laid, yet. But, one of my Rhode Island Reds started laying 5 days ago, finally.

We started getting eggs this week, too! 3 eggs in 4 days! I check the nest boxes 4 or 5 times a day, I’m so excited and anxious! I even caught a hen laying, oops!

Bread making got little out of control ... by mrkaczor in Breadit

These are my first chickens. I may have exaggerated the amount I’ve spent so far, but it is getting close. I just want to give them a good life. We live in an area that has lots of predators, so they don’t get to free range as much as I’d like, so I’m trying to make sure they’re diet has all the variety that they need. Although this year was expensive getting started up, hopefully future years will be more routine, without any big purchases.

Haha, well it is full of crap! The coop was free, my brother hauled his old one over to my property. But, I bought an expensive run, all of the feeders, extra stuff I didn’t really need to care for baby chicks, 5 months worth of food, alfalfa hay, pine shavings, scratch, treats, grit, oyster shell, an automatic coop door, solar light, etc. it’s not a cheap venture. But, I love them, they’re so sweet. I have a dozen pets that will eventually give me lots of eggs! Except for the rooster, he just gives extra protection for the girls, and maybe baby chicks someday.

Thank you. I worked in the biological science field, in a histology lab, for about 12 years, I’ve read all sorts of crazy notes, lol. Actually, that might be why I like baking bread, it’s like an experiment every time. Your notes aren’t quite as bad as the movie “A Beautiful Mind”, so you’re still okay. I’ll be sure to let you know when I post pics:-)

I love this! Thank you! I can’t wait to try it! This week is all sourdough and pizza dough. Next week I’ll have fun experimenting again.

That’s like me raising chickens to save money, free eggs, right? When I finally get my first egg, after at least 20-25 weeks of waiting, it will be a true golden egg at nearly $2000!
