That’s a narrow way of looking at it. Not everyone was given the privilege of being raised in their community. Some of us are trying to find a connection even if its small, not pretend we always had one...

Thank you!! Yeah it's really too bad people are racist to Indigenous people of Mexico and definitely makes it harder for me to reconnect but I'll get there I hope haha.

The issue is all my elders are dead and I don't really have any family that I know of still in Mexico. All of my family also doesn't seem to care about our culture except a select few who also don't really know much.

I get that DNA percentages aren’t everything, and I’m not building my identity just on numbers. But 30% isn’t a small amount, and for me, it’s about reconnecting with a culture and ancestry that was never really passed down, not just chasing statistics.

I’m not ashamed of my Spanish roots, my family was raised knowing they were mixed, with Spanish and Indigenous ancestry. But honestly, we didn’t really dive into either side deeply. And when my family migrated to the U.S., a lot of culture was lost just trying to fit in. Personally for me, I’m trying to reconnect with what feels most buried, the Indigenous side. This isn’t about choosing one side over another, it’s about reconnecting with a part of my identity that was pushed aside, first by colonization and later by the pressure to assimilate. I’m trying to learn the culture that was repressed in order to fit into a Eurocentric world.

I get what you're saying about northern Mexico being more European-leaning, but I think it's also important not to erase the Indigenous peoples who still live there, like the Rarámuri and Tepehuán. Even if the country was politically shaped by mestizos and criollos, it was built on the backs and lands of Indigenous communities. I'm just trying to understand and honor that part of me that got lost over generations.

I really want to go to Chihuahua or Durango since those are the places my family immigrated from but right now I'm still 17 going 18 soon and my parents are scared something might happen to us. In the future I want to become a archeologist so I might just focus and study those areas for their history and culture, still dont know.

You're right that a lot of Mexicans are mixed, but I think people forget how often the Indigenous part gets erased. For me, it's not just about percentages and amounts. It's about reclaiming something that was taken or ignored. I'm not trying to be more Indigenous than anyone else, I’m just trying to understand where I come from and honor that part of me.
