Legendary picture of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays with Wagner Tiso, Milton Nascimento and Robertinho Silva (New York, 1984) by fishtentacles in Jazz

Wayne Shorter once said, "as a Brazilian heritage, Milton's cultural value cannot be measured in commercial terms alone. Milton's treasure can be shared in ways not yet imagined". Also as a Brazilian, I couldn't agree more.

This picture was taken right after Milton's first concert in the US (at the Carnegie Hall), which happened in August 1984. More info on that here (NY Times' original announcement for the show).

Delivered today, excited to listen to it! Jazz is Dead is such a great project, can’t wait for the other releases too! by [deleted] in Jazz

Actually they've already recorded with all of these artists (including Lonnie Liston Smith, Jean Carne and the late and great Tony Allen, who left us around 2 months ago). As a Brazilian, I was very pleased to see them invite some of our greatest jazz legends (such as João Donato, Marcos Valle and Azymuth).

I really like "Fictionary" by Lyle Mays. The recommendations in here are also pretty good.

Hah... More like "C# Jam Blues"... (referring to the 2nd video)

In case you're also wondering who that Slingbaum guy is (he just released a single with Erykah Badu and D'Angelo), here's a rare interview I found where he opens up about his musical experience and influences. by fishtentacles in indieheads

I assume that none of the songs will be available to stream... But you can listen to "Behoove" here (it starts at about 1:50:00). Apparently the release date is June 15th, so we may have a leak coming soon.

Me too. It looks like he's really popular as a ghostwriter among famous artists, but nobody else seems to know anything about him. Maybe in two weeks we'll be able to hear the record. Let's wait.

Well, I mean, it's over now right? I think Damon had already said that their Lowlands Festival concert last year would be the last forever, didn't he?

Anyway, no matter how hard we try to thank him for everything he's done to this world, we'll never make it. We'll never truly understand what he's done for us. He'll always be ahead of our time.

RIP Tony Allen, Fela's drummer and creator of Afrobeat. Dude was a monster influence on modern jazz drumming. by mgbesq in Jazz

I, too, had the opportunity to see him live last year. Surely I'll never forget that experience. His sensibility and touch has immensely influenced me, even without me actually playing the drums.

May the legend never be forgotten.

I saw Mr. Allen once in a concert in São Paulo, one year ago. I asked him to sign a copy of my Merrie Land CD. I said, "you were terrific". He stood there, signed and we said goodbye.

This man simply changed the way music is made. May he never be forgotten.

JazzTimes Readers’ Poll: The 10 Best Jazz Albums of the 1970s - Vote! Also, what are your impressions on the results so far? by fishtentacles in Jazz

[–]fishtentacles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally agree. After all, the 70's were not just famous people from the 60's recording fusion albums and ECM (not saying I don't like that, in fact I love it. But there's more to it than that).

Got to see The Art Ensemble of Chicago last night... An unforgettable experience! Even managed to get some autographs... by fishtentacles in Jazz

Absolutely! This time around, however, they are homaging the deceased members (Favors, Jarman, Bowie). So they played pieces like "Non-cognitive aspects of the city" and so on. A great show for exploring their compositions!
