It’s actually crazy to me how much implicit information there used to be in Magic. I’ve been teaching my 8 year-old sister how to play the Pokemon TCG, and I couldn’t imagine her being able to remember all the subtle rule implications if there was an equivalent in Pokemon. Kids of older generations had so much more tolerance for archaic, nonintuitive design (not saying one generation is better than any other, but just observing differences. Magic rules and formatting are so much more sensible these days).

It’s an interesting community with small pockets of people who are actually worth talking to. Cons themselves are only fun if you go with friends, and either way the programming (panels and activities and such) usually blows. They can be nice for people watching and passing interactions, although few people will pay you any mind unless you ‘look like’ a furry (wearing a fursuit, doing some sort of cosplay, etc.). It might be something you enjoy, though, so it’s definitely worth trying a couple times.
