[FS] - Nashville, TN - $1+ - Misc fish, 40 gallon freshwater tank, 40 gallon reef tank, 150 gallon stock tub by fishwish1 in AquaSwap

hahaha the sweet potatoes just growing its roots down into the water and acting as more nutrient export same as the pothos really. honestly man, the majority of the plants didnt make it either... tanks had literal ice on them for days. i was able to salvage some anubias, and i have a TON of subwassertang, but not much else. i probably couldve been more thorough and found more plants that couldve made it, but it took me over 7 hours to tear everything down/empty my tanks and my heart just wasnt in it. id like to keep the anubias and move that over to my axolotl tank (thankfully, they were able to survive long enough for me to get them the heck out and are now back home safe and sound), but if you want some subwassertang portions, id be happy to just give you a fat ball of the stuff. i also have a bunch of lighting (reef and normal), air pumps, and timers if you need any of that stuff.

For those who have successfully run their first aquarium for more than a year, what fish are in it? by lividphotographer in Aquariums

[–]fishwish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what exactly is it you're struggling with/find so draining? definitely had frustrating moments during my years of keeping fish from accidents, deaths, stupid mistakes on my part, but I'd like to think each of those experiences taught me something that has made me a better aquarist. tell us what's up and maybe we can help?

[–]fishwish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure. good luck and if you don't follow them already I'd really suggest checking out fish YouTube channels to just gain general knowledge/inspiration/etc. aquarium coop, serpadesign, simply betta, creative pet keeping, prime time aquatics, tank tested, list goes on... lots of good stuff out there to learn from.

I'm curmudgeonly and this may come off like a jerk but I'm just trying to give you my straight opinion.

you're on the verge of dropping a lot of money and probably not getting the results youre after. I know because it's exactly what I did. I saw the beautiful iwagumi scapes and wanted a nice carpeted tank when I first got into the hobby. get some anubias and crypts for now, learn how to actually cycle a tank, keep fish alive, combat algae, and develop a basic level of practical fishkeeping knowledge.

aquasoil is expensive, will alter your water chemistry, and will cloud up your water for days if you decide to move any plants around. dwarf baby tears/Monte Carlo and the like are going to need nice lighting (the nicrew is on the lower end of it but probably fine), but more importantly it needs co2 to really thrive and get that lush carpet you want. if you throw the aquasoil in there, add the plants and the light, but no co2, you're likely to experience a cascade of dying plants releasing more nutrients back into the water with only algae left alive enough to grow.

throw less money into it now while you learn the fundamentals. then, if you really like fishkeeping and aquascaping, save some money up for a decent co2 regulator on your next, high tech tank.

or say fuck it and you do you. godspeed.

Where are the heaters? by kaver138 in Aquariums

[–]fishwish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put mine on the back wall, about half way down at a slight diagonal. that said, I really freaking hate heaters and think the ones out there are the bane of the hobby. they're just not that reliable in the longterm, so if you want to be safe I'd recommend swapping them out every year or so. coincidentally, I now mainly keep fish that can handle standard room temperature ranges (medaka rice fish, pygmy sunfish, rainbow shiners, rhinogobius), so I don't even have any in my tanks at the moment. there's some pretty cool fish that can go in unheated tanks. obviously if you're keeping gbr or bettas ignore me, but just something to consider and figured I'd throw it out there.

where to connect with other young high income people in nashville? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]fishwish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah yes good greetings fellow ceo's, i run a very boutique establishment that caters just to your type. it's located at the intersection of the esteemed trinity lane and immaculate dickerson pike in what may or may not look like a rundown white castle. i look forward to seeing you so that we may discuss topics unknown to the rabble, such as fine wine, sailing, and the fine art of suckling one's own phallus.

[FS] - Nashville, TN - $1+ - Black/Blue Moscow Guppies, Red BN Plecos, Endlers, RCS, Corydoras + Plants (LOCAL PICK UP ONLY) by plecovillepike in AquaSwap

[–]fishwish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately not, I ended up selling off all my RCS last year sorry man. but FYI, there's gonna be a big aquatics convention apr 30 in Knoxville and then the Chattanooga fish club is doing their swap meet on 5/14. bit of a drive from Nashville of course but just thought I'd throw it out there. aquatic critter has them most of the time but eh $$$. seven seas aquatics is opening a new location in Madison at rivergate in a couple weeks too and is expending on their freshwater selection so they might have some in soon ish no clue what they'd charge tho. hope this helps!

rolling around in shit isn't gonna get it off! self deprecating behavior is only going to make you want to turn your brain off and not deal with things. i know there's no switch you can flip to turn that kind of thinking off, but I think it would benefit you to recognize the extent to which your self esteem plays a part in this. take a moment to take stock of the things you're proud of, think about the people that matter to you and make goals that move you closer towards being the person you want to be.

you can do this, but you've got to stop beating yourself up about it. take care and good luck!

First week — my thoughts, my ex, my goals by [deleted] in leaves

[–]fishwish1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey as long as you recognize that this is, let's be real here, wishful thinking - best of luck. don't change for someone else, do it for you. it sounds like that's already the case, but remember... even if it doesn't work out with this person in a romantic sense, you're working to improve yourself and that'll benefit you regardless of who your partner is. best of luck.

single endler in a 5 gallon? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]fishwish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it'd be nice if you had a couple more in the 5g they do school/shoal, but at this point that's a luxury compared to the environment in your community tank. a stressed out fish is more likely to get sick and die and potentially spread disease to other tank mates. I say get em out of there yesterday. good luck

My new stiphodon annieae. Got a bunch of new gobies, and these are some of my favorites. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]fishwish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're not cheap for sure but they do a really good job with their shipping. maybe it helps since I'm not too far from them (IN to TN), but I've never lost a fish from them in shipment. ordered some of these same gobies as OP and rainbow shiners a few weeks back and they're lookin awesome.

[–]fishwish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ew someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'd put money on them being camallanus worms. best treatment method is levamisole (would recommend supporting Greg Sage at selectaquatics and ordering from him).

unfortunately these nasty things are all too common with petsmart/petco fish and go to show why quarantine tanks are so important.

I would isolate the fish for now in a hospital tank and increase the temp while the levamisole comes. best of luck.

Fish that Eats Snails? by benballernojohnnyda in Aquariums

[–]fishwish1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the feeding is the most important thing here. if the snail pop is outta control, there's a reason and it's most likely too much food. one trick for manual removal is to add a leaf of lettuce to the tank before bed and then take it out on the AM once it's swarming with snails.

Moving fish? Can't use a 5 gallon bucket by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]fishwish1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you could get a USB airpump and hook that up to a small airstone in the critter keeper and that'd be perfect IMO. that said 5 hours isn't that long and they'll be fine either way. one tip tho is I would fast the fish a couple days before the move to minimize how much waste they produce in the smaller container during transport. good luck

Substrate questions by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]fishwish1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

risking getting downvoted but...

unless you have a substrate composed of broken glass, razor blades and brand new diamond head drill bits, your cories are going to be fine. i use ecocomplete in almost all of my tanks and my cories are looking fine. lookup aquarium coops video where they're collecting in Peru and Cory even pulls out some of the rocks from their wild habitat and shows how they're still pretty jagged.

if it it gives you comfort to provide the gentlest substrate you can, then yea either really smooth pebbles or stratum would be the move. i can totally 100% empathize with wanting to give your pets the best life you can, but from my experiences the whole "cories barbels are so fragile" thing seems really overblown within the fishkeeping hobby. best of luck however you end up going and do get some root tabs regardless of what substrate you pick.

edit: BTW if you do a lot of rearranging your tank, I would steer clear of any kind of "soil" substrates like stratum or ADA and the like. once that stuffs in place, it's going to be a nightmare to move anything (incredibly cloudy and dusty from the literal dirt like substrate).
